How to pitch (for staff meetings, interviews and articles!)

Ed2010 presents a one-night seminar with mag freelancer and teacher Eric Butterman on the art of pitching. One half of the night will focus on how to write the best email pitches possible, be good on the phone and actually sell stories. The other half is on pitching with confidence in meetings and selling yourself in interviews (one Butterman student used his class to turn pitch meetings into a byline at Reader's Digest and another is now an editor at Oprah's O at Home). Memo Pad: Eager Words
By Stephanie D. Smith

The sudden death of Heath Ledger took many by surprise — including most of the celebrity weeklies that closed this week's issues before it could report the news of his death. But Star found one way to keep relevant as details of Ledger's passing emerged — having editorial director Bonnie Fuller blog about the young star's death on The Huffington Post, and then link to Star's Web site "for more coverage of Heath's life and tragic death." Even more aggressive than her cross-promotion is Fuller's assumption the young star died by suicide before an autopsy even began. Fuller wrote: "None of his gifts, neither talent nor family, appears to have been enough to combat the demons that apparently led Heath to take the pills that could have ended his young life." But an autopsy Wednesday morning was inconclusive, and authorities have not committed to suicide as cause of death. "The way I wrote it, I didn't mean to say definitively that it was suicide at all. I felt like I left it open," Fuller told WWD.

Commenters on The Huffington Post think Fuller jumped the gun. "I am assuming that some people who are paid to write will write almost anything to get something out there. Bonnie Fuller, hopefully, will read all of these comments and learn a lesson about sensationalizing the death of someone she doesn't even know," wrote commenter PatA. "Bonnie Fuller: tacky tacky tacky," wrote another, ParadiseDiva. And ellezeebub responded to Fuller: "Couldn't wait to see if there was something else going on — had to go with the 'demons' of his personal conflict. What demons?....Of course, you wouldn't be able to turn much of a buck on that story." Star, In Touch, Life & Style and Us Weekly won't likely make much on the Ledger news. The only celebrity weekly that features Ledger as its cover story is People, which closed its issue Tuesday night. \

Sischy, Brant Resign at Interview
By Lisa Lockwood

Sischy has resigned as the magazine's editor in chief after 18 years at the helm. The selling price could not be learned, although sources said Sandra Brant "did very well. It was fair value."

In an exclusive interview, Sandra Brant said that, over the past two years, her objective was for the magazines to remain independent and to continue to operate in a creative environment. Although she was presented with several opportunities, including selling the magazines to a publishing company or private equity investors, several of the options would have provided her with financing to buy out her co-owner but would have saddled her with tremendous debt. Faced with a declining economy and tightening credit markets, which are bound to impact luxury categories, Sandra Brant would have had to take on a fairly significant economic risk.

People Only Celeb Weekly to Get Heath Ledger on Cover
By Nat Ives
1/23/08 http://adage.com/mediaworks/article?article_id=123270

People magazine's issue on newsstands Friday will be the only celebrity title this week with a cover story about the awful, but clearly biggest, news of the cycle: yesterday's discovery of Heath Ledger dead at 28.

People only has the news because it holds its issues open until late on Tuesday nights, while its competitors lock their issues down on Mondays. But it is likely to benefit People in the relentless checkout-lane war against Us Weekly, Star, OK, In Touch and Life & Style.

Star magazine's cover this week features Jamie Lynn Spears, whose unhappy teen pregnancy has moved its own share of magazine sales. OK's cover will feature Britney Spears.

Bonnier Joins ABC’s Rapid Report
By Jason Fell

Bonnier has joined the growing list of major magazine publishers to enlist in the Audit Bureau of Circulation’s Rapid Report system.

When it launched in 2006, the free-of-charge Rapid Report system—which allows publishers to voluntarily report their top-line circulation data on an issue-by-issue basis within weeks of the on-sale date—was slow to get participation from major publishers, who were reluctant to share the data with rivals.

The number of publishers to sign on seems to have skyrocketed since last fall, when Time Inc., which sold its Parenting and Time4 Media groups to Bonnier last year, joined the program. “We’re very pleased by the response we’ve received in the past few months,” an ABC spokesperson says. “We’re seeing a good increase in the number of participating titles.”
