EdSchool Presents a NEW class:

Entertainment Journalism 101

Want to interview celebrities and write juicy stories for a tabloid? Ed presents a four-night seminar with entertainment writer/editor Deborah Baer (she's worked for In Touch, US Weekly, Star, Seventeen, Ladies' Home Journal and more) that will give you the tools to break into the biz. Baer will teach students how to turn their brilliant ideas into entertainment features, write celebrity profiles, improve their interviewing skills — and make $$$ just by watching TV, reading books, listening to music, surfing the Internet and going to the movies.

Class meets in NYC, Wednesdays (February 27, March 5, 12 and 19) from 7-9pm. Cost is $200.
To Sign Up: RSVP to edschool@ed2010.com is REQUIRED. You'll get an email back with the PayPal URL. For more information about the class and Deborah, go to http://www.ed2010.com/events/edschool-seminars/list or click here.

Time Editor: Someday There Will Be People Who Don’t Know Therer’s a Print Version
By Bill Mickley

Time magazine’s managing editor Richard Stengel opened the Direct Marketing Association’s 22nd annual Circulation Day event today in New York with a keynote that largely addressed the magazine’s relationship with the Web site. Recounting the last year and a half, Stengle noted the magazine’s redesign, ratebase reduction, the new publication date and the Web site’s expansion into a product that stands out as a separate, 24/7 news site.

Broadly, Stengel said the magazine needed to regain its status as a vital read, in a way that vaguely echoed the luxe leanings of other high-end publications. “We have to become a more premium product with beautiful paper and photography,” he said. “Each medium needs to do what it does best. A magazine should be something you’re addicted to.”

The Web site, too, had, to Stengel, become static. “We were a traditional magazine Web site. We decided we should be a 24/7 news Web site.”

Mark Pasetsky, who served as Life & Style’s general manager and, later, its editor-in-chief, today announced a launch of a Web site that will cover, at least in part, his old magazine.

The blog, CoverAwards.com, will feature content focused on magazine covers, newspaper covers and Web Site home pages.

According to Pasetsky, the goal is to “offer the media industry and consumers a place to converse about the hottest covers on the newsstand, as well as Web site home pages.” Pasetsky also plans to interview editors for the cover “backstories,” and break cover news “on a daily basis.”

BUSINESSWEEK, the McGraw-Hill flagship magazine that was rattled by pre-Christmas layoffs in the editorial department, has pushed another 20 people with contracts closer to the door.

Last Friday, Executive Editor John Byrne on a conference call told the contract workers they were being reassigned to a contract with Kelly Services.

In the past, they drew their paychecks from parent company McGraw-Hill and were assigned to work on a short-to-long-term basis for BusinessWeek.

Following an organizational streamlining, 13 positions have been eliminated at NBC Universal-owned iVillage, representing 4% of the company?s 300-person workforce, an iVillage spokesperson confirmed Tuesday.

Sources said the move is intended to reduce duplication among positions and streamline operations at iVillage, which insiders noted was operating as 15 disparate businesses when NBC Universal acquired it in 2006 but has since seen 18 months of year-over-year growth.

Among those affected were employees in the editorial, marketing and research departments, including iVillage editor-in-chief Jennie Baird, according to sources. Meanwhile, some of the 13 staffers affected are being eyed for other positions within NBC Universal.
