******* SPENDING millions to land celebrity photo exclusives might give you boasting rights, but it doesn't always mean newsstand sales will blast off. People magazine is estimated to have paid $1.5 million for this week's exclusive photos of Christina Aguilera and her new baby, but early estimates from the President's Day weekend sales show consumers have had a rather tepid response to the issue so far. The issue, which hit late last week, is on target to sell only around 1.3 million copies this week, according to several industry sources, though one estimate put the number slightly higher to 1.5 million copies. People, Time Inc.'s top moneymaking title, ordinarily averages 1.4 million copies a week on newsstands. MORE ONLINE

Let the inevitable comparisons to The New York Times' T begin: The Wall Street Journal's new glossy magazine has officially jettisoned the name Pursuits in favor of...WSJ. That's W-S-and-J — period included. (So, too, let the punctuation wrangling commence.) A spokesman confirmed the name: "Its understatedness suits the personality of the Journal and avoids the pretense and artifice of many bad magazine names. The three letters happen to be typographically quite pleasing. And its simplicity gives us enormous flexibility visually and semantically." The logo was designed by Tomaso Capuano, who was recently hired from The Times of London to be art director at WSJ., and who designed The Financial Times' How to Spend It. The spokesman said the idea was the consensus for business and editorial, "because both sides believed it would resonate with both readers and advertisers respectively." The magazine's editor, Tina Gaudoin, will take WSJ.'s early materials on a "road show" to advertisers in London, Milan and Paris next month, with U.S. appearances in five cities following in April. The magazine business has long been weirdly secretive about circulation data, delaying the release of issue-by-issue numbers until weeks or months after the fact. That was supposed to change this year with the widespread adoption of a new, rapid-reporting system by the Audit Bureau of Circulations, the industry body most big publishers use to verify their claims. ABC Rapid Report allows publishers to post sales numbers for an issue as soon as it goes off-sale, defusing one of the main arguments used by TV and web outlets to lure advertising dollars away from print. There's only one problem with the new system: Publishers aren't using it. Or not nearly as much as they could be, anyway. MORE ONLINE

Seizing on the growing popularity of online video and community sites, Hearst Magazines has launched channels for three of its popular magazines on YouTube, with another 12 to follow in the near future, the publisher is set to announce Feb. 20. Hearst is hardly the first traditional media company to ink a deal with YouTube (TVGuide, Tribune Co. and Reuters, among them). The publisher says that a user-generated approach sets its deal apart from others that preceded it Hearst’s channels—which already are up and running for Marie Claire, Seventeen and Good Housekeeping magazines—is meant to encourage community by sponsoring magazine-branded contests that ask people to upload personalized videos. Marie Claire, Seventeen and Good Housekeeping have launched YouTube-branded channels and more are on the way. Thanks to a deal between Hearst Magazines Digital Media and YouTube that was unveiled Wednesday, 15 Hearst print and online publications, including Harper's Bazaar, Esquire, Cosmopolitan and The Daily Green, will provide lifestyle content online, contests and allow viewers to upload personalized videos. For example, Harper's Bazaar readers will be able to view the latest on fashion and beauty, and cooking videos will be posted from the editorial staff at Good Housekeeping. A spokesman declined to discuss terms of the deal. BOOK DEAL: Stacy Morrison, editor in chief of Redbook, is the latest editor to receive a book deal. After a bidding war between six publishing houses, Simon & Schuster Inc. won the right to publish Morrison's book, which will be a "prescriptive memoir" about her divorce, called "Falling Apart in One Piece." "I want to comfort those that are going through the same things," she said. MORE ONLINE

When laddy shop Dennis Publishing launched a new kind of magazine 18 months ago, an e-zine called Monkey, doubts abounded. A lot of people had tried e-zines, none with any great success, and besides, the men's category was already overcrowded. These months later, Dennis claims that the free weekly digital magazine is doing well, and the best evidence of that may be Gizmo, a new e-zine very much like Monkey that Dennis aims to launch on March 11 That's Gizmo as in boy toys. Dennis is not saying much about Gizmo at this point beyond this: It will be 26 pages, six of which will be advertising. It will target men 25 to 45, and to build readership Dennis will aggressively target that demographic from its databases of about 3.5 million men aged 18 to 45, some number of those gathered from its print circulation lists. It will come out every two weeks. MORE ONLINE
