LAST CHANCE TO SIGN UP: EdSchool Presents a NEW class:

*******

Entertainment Journalism 101

Want to interview celebrities and write juicy stories for a tabloid? Ed presents a four-night seminar with entertainment writer/editor Deborah Baer (she's worked for In Touch, US Weekly, Star, Seventeen, Ladies' Home Journal and more) that will give you the tools to break into the biz. Baer will teach students how to turn their brilliant ideas into entertainment features, write celebrity profiles, improve their interviewing skills — and make $$$ just by watching TV, reading books, listening to music, surfing the Internet and going to the movies.

Class meets Wednesdays (February 27, March 5, 12 and 19) from 7-9pm. Cost is $200.
To Sign Up: RSVP to edschool@ed2010.com is REQUIRED. You'll get an email back with the PayPal URL. For more information about the class and Deb, go to http://www.ed2010.com/events/edschool-seminars/list or click here.

Why It Took Martha Eight Years to Nab Emeril
By Nat Ives
February 25, 2008
http://adage.com/mediaworks/article?article_id=125311

Way back in July 1999, long before Martha Stewart's incarceration made painfully obvious the limitations for a company built around one person, her company said it wasn't planning to rely on her personal brand alone.

"We believe that a reduction in our dependence on Martha Stewart personally and a better balance of personality and brand will provide additional brand durability, increased growth opportunities and a broader recognition of a new generation of Martha Stewart Living experts," the company said in 1999.

But the intervening years, packed with efforts to build up other names, failed to produce the desired breakouts -- certainly no one with the earning and drawing power of Ms. Stewart.

Memo Pad

GOODBYE AND HELLO: Monday marked the first day of a regime change at Brant Publications, where Fabien Baron and Glenn O'Brien began their new jobs as co-editorial directors of its titles, Interview, Art in America and The Magazine Antiques. The day also marked the end of Ingrid Sischy's era as Interview's editor in chief.

ONLY IN NEW YORK: With Los Angeles' Oscar parties having been diminished, and Entertainment Weekly having ceded its traditional viewing spot at Elaine's, New York magazine had a relatively open field for its third annual Oscar party at The Spotted Pig. There were famous-for-media types (among them, James Truman, tight-lipped about the vague rumors of his plans to reenter media), the New York party standbys (Alan Cumming, anyone?) and some of the television stars normally seen at Elaine's.

NICOLE AND ANNIE: Does Vogue already have a fall cover in the can? Ask Annie Leibovitz and Nicole Kidman — not to mention, of course, editor in chief Anna Wintour. "If you ring up Nicole Kidman and say, 'Annie Leibovitz wants to photograph you for the next cover,' she'll be there that night," Wintour says in the documentary "Annie Leibovitz: Life Through a Lens." And that appears to be exactly what she's done: Wintour just teamed up the duo all the way Down Under for the second time in seven years. Earlier this month, Leibovitz, a pregnant Kidman and approximately 50 production crew members were spotted by a Channel Nine news helicopter in Richmond, just west of Sydney, shooting what turned out to be a feature for Vogue based on Baz Luhrmann's upcoming movie, "Australia."

Do You Actually Have to Listen to an Album to Review It?
By Dylan Stableford

Maxim isn't exactly a bastion for journalistic integrity. Nor a bastion for music criticism. But according to the Black Crowes (you know, “Twice as Hard,” “Jealous Again,” Kate Hudson’s ex-husband, beards) the magazine burned whatever credibility it had left by reviewing the band’s upcoming album without actually listening to it.

According to a post on the Black Crowes official site, the Maxim writer, who “has not heard the album since advance CDs were not made available—wrote what appears to be a disparaging assessment anyway, citing ‘it hasn’t left Chris Robinson and the gang much room for growth.’”

Peter Angelus, the band’s manager, said when confronted Maxim called the review an “educated guess”: “‘Of course, we always prefer hearing music, but sometimes there are big albums that we don’t want to ignore that aren’t available to hear, which is what happened with the Crowes. It’s either an educated guess preview or no coverage at all, so in this case we chose the former.’”

Getty Images Agrees to Be Acquired by a Private Equity Firm
By MICHAEL J. de la MERCED

Getty Images, the world’s biggest distributor of pictures and video, agreed on Monday to sell itself to the private equity firm Hellman & Friedman for $2.4 billion including debt.

By accepting the deal, Getty will remove itself from public markets that have pummeled its stock for more than two years. Getty’s shares have fallen some 73 percent over that time, as lower-cost Internet-based rivals cut into revenue.

Hellman is offering $34 a share in cash, about a 55 percent premium over the share price on Jan. 18, the last trading day before Getty confirmed that it was exploring a potential sale.
