******* Nicole Richie didn’t just beat rival Christina Aguilera to the delivery room by having daughter Harlow on Jan. 11, one day before Aguilera gave birth to son Max, but it appears Richie will beat Aguilera on the newsstand as well. Both new moms each had their own cover of People magazine, and according to some early estimates, the issue featuring Richie is on target to sell more than 1.8 million copies, according to an industry source, whereas Aguilera's has sold far less. (People magazine could not confirm sales numbers; a spokesperson said its too soon to know how many copies were sold.) Why does there seem to be more interest in Harlow Winter Kate Madden? One magazine insider said part of it could come down to the moms’ fan bases. “Christina historically doesn’t do that well on covers,” said the source, who cites poor sales of her wedding photo issue in OK!, and less-than-stellar sales of her nude photo shoot in the January 2008 Marie Claire. It was something of a cultural contrast: representatives from Hoffman Media Inc., the Birmingham, Ala.-based publisher of titles such as Southern Lady, Cooking with Paula Deen and Just CrossStitch, pitching the relaunched Victoria magazine to a roomful of potential advertisers at Le Bernadin — with Hearst Magazines president Cathie Black in tow. The magazine, which was published by Hearst until 2003 and is being revived as a joint venture between the two companies, describes itself as the authority on gracious living, and its decidedly romantic sensibility was, Black freely admitted, unfamiliar to her. (Earlier, Phyllis Hoffman, president of Hoffman Media, had cited Black's canary yellow jacket as an example of balancing traditional femininity with business acumen.) The magazine's hugely committed base of women and their clamoring for the magazine's return was repeatedly mentioned, a pointed reminder there is a tremendous audience outside of Manhattan for coverage of tea time and traditional gardens. "Our biggest challenge was — let's cut to the chase — positioning it to the advertising community," Black said, adding she would tell advertisers, "It doesn't matter if you don't get it. The readers get it. Maybe more than any magazine we publish except maybe O [The Oprah Magazine]." Black also posited that the women who turn their decorative wedding cake skills into small businesses and collect antique lace for sale at antique fairs should be seen as entrepreneurs, even if they wouldn't use the word themselves. Still, when it came down to it, the executive, who last year published a motivational business book aimed at women, opted for businesslike bluntness over sweet talk. "You can buy it on the newsstand, you can subscribe — or you can advertise," she said during dessert. "There's no such thing as a free lunch." MORE ONLINE

A NEW LENS: Joe Zee's arrival at Elle as creative director has ushered in a fresh look, while longtime creative head Gilles Bensimon's involvement in the magazine has gradually subsided. But the April edition will issue in a major sea change — Bensimon, who has shot the covers for Elle for more than 20 years, did not shoot them for the April and May issues. In fact, Bensimon's work is nowhere to be found in either issue. April's cover with Natalie Portman was shot by Carter Smith, who worked with Zee at W and Vitals. Smith also recently directed a horror film for Dreamworks, "The Ruins," and shot the movie's actresses, Jena Malone and Laura Ramsey, for the magazine's March issue. For May, Tom Munro was dispatched to shoot Madonna in Los Angeles; the issue will hit as her new album is released. FIRST MONROE, NOW MINOGUE: Paper Magazine held a lunch in the ballroom of the newly renovated Sunset Marquis Tuesday afternoon to celebrate its current cover girl, Lindsay Lohan, who was shot by Jeremy Scott. Lohan, back to her natural red hair and sporting her current favorite Marni pumps, was abuzz about the upcoming album she is planning to record in New York for Motown Records. "I'm recording it over the next few months, we don't know the release date yet, but it will have a very Kylie Minogue vibe, with great beats and dance singles," she said. While Lohan and Scott won't be attending any shows during the upcoming Los Angeles Fashion Week, they were both fresh off flights from Europe, where Lohan attended Dolce & Gabbana and Scott showed in Paris. It's rumored he may also present in L.A., an event for which Lohan promised to show up. MORE ONLINE

Lawyers for National Geographic were in the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta late last week to argue what they have been arguing for years: that the Complete National Geographic, a pioneering CD-ROM project the magazine released in 1997, does not violate the intellectual property rights of freelance photographers whose work first appeared in print. “It’s the archive that’s at stake,” Angelo Grima, senior vice president and deputy general counsel for the National Geographic Society, said during a panel on digital rights at the Magazine Publishers of America’s Magazines 24/7 conference at the Hearst Tower Thursday. “We’ll go to the Supreme Court if we have to, because our archive is that important to us.” The litigation, now entering its 11th year, has seen more twists than a John Grisham novel. The 11th Circuit first ruled in 2001 in favor of Jerry Greenberg, a freelance photographer whose work had appeared in National Geographic (in 1962, 1968 and 1971) and then on CD. Subsequent cases in the 2nd Circuit ruled in favor of National Geographic. In 2004, a Florida judge awarded Greenburg $400,000 in damages; National Geographic appealed. Last year, a three-judge panel of the 11th Circuit overruled the 2001 decision in favor of National Geographic, but Greenburg asked for—and was granted—a full court review. MORE ONLINE

An underpublicized magazine star is Meredith Integrated Marketing's Figure, where in second-half-2007, an Audit Bureau of Circulations' Fas-Fax-reported average of 580,082 people paid $3.95 each for the bimonthly for full-figured women. The +16.1% differential versus second-half-2006 follows first-half-2007's +18.2% (min, September 10, 2007), and the 580,082 accounts for nearly 90% of Figure's 648,891 total. Quite a niche that the folks at Meredith have discovered, and it affirms that the folks at the full-figured women's-fashion magazine Mode were ahead of their time a decade ago. Mode shut down in 2001. It has been a tough 21st century for teen girls' magazines, with the closures of YM/Ellegirl/Teen People, but in second-half-2007, newsstand sales for J-14/M/Seventeen were up. At CosmoGirl!, where its 388,139 newsstand was off fractionally (-1.3%), new publisher Vicki Wellington (ex- Self/Domino associate publisher and sister of Reader's Digest [U.S.] publisher Jeff Wellington) starts March 10. Predecessor/CG! founding publisher (1999) Kristine Welker is now Hearst Magazines Digital Media vp/sales and marketing. PARAGRAPH 3 MORE ONLINE

Southern Progress Corporation (SPC), a subsidiary of Time Inc., has launched an online portal, MyHomeIdeas.com, highlighting content from its shelter magazines and book line. MyHomeIdeas.com features the Oxmoor House books, Cottage Living, Coastal Living, Southern Living, Southern Accents and Sunset magazine brands. The vertical portal, SPC's second in the past year (after MyRecipes.com), focuses on homes, d?cor and gardening. Content is targeted mainly at women, 25-50 years of age, who are interested in “nesting” and decorating. “We feel like SPC is already doing a great job in the print space, so this is the natural evolution,” said Jim Sexton, SVP and editorial director for SPC Digital. “So much of our audience is beginning to get their information online, we want to also be online. We want them to read the print magazines, but when they want to go deeper or broader we want them to go online.” MORE ONLINE

On a recent Monday morning David Carey, group president of Cond? Nast since early January, welcomed Off the Record to his spacious and spare 18th-floor corner office at 4 Times Square with his hand extended. “Want a smoothie?” he asked, gesturing to a table full of fruit and yogurt parfaits. The auburn-haired Mr. Carey, 46, is of formidable height—6-foot-1—but has a dad’s slouched, somewhat recessive posture. Grabbing a plate of cantaloupe, he spoke about life in Scarsdale, which he shares with four kids—two pairs of fraternal, mixed-sex twins—and his wife, Lauri, who used to work in special events at the Metropolitan Opera but is now a homemaker. “It’s been fascinating to see all these high-rise towers going up in White Plains and they just opened a Ritz-Carlton, too,” he said, between chomps. “Not just a hotel. But beautiful residences. They have all these condos, and they sold out very quickly.” For years, the publishing side of Cond? Nast been without any identifiable personalities, but Mr. Carey, whom many speculate might succeed CEO Chuck Townsend, is quickly becoming its face: the quiet, contented face of a millennial Man in the Gray Flannel Suit with a slight spare tire around his middle, leaving the Beemer at the Metro-North station to chug into work. There’s also a Toyota Sienna, “the best one on the market,” in the garage back home—Mr. Carey’s choice for corporate car. “Alas,” he e-mailed OTR, “minivans are something I know about.” And then: a frowny-face emoticon.
