MPA to Propose New Magazine Audience Metrics
By Lucia Moses
March 10, 2008
http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/print/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003722158

Facing frustration over the current state of magazine measurement, Magazine Publishers of America today will propose new metrics designed to convert buyers over the next couple of years to an audience-based model from one based on circulation.

The MPA plan resulted from a year’s work by consultants McKinsey & Co. with magazine executives and calls for a yardstick to measure reader exposure to magazines on an issue-specific basis, broken out by key demographics like age, gender and income; issue-specific engagement with ads based on recall of specific ads; and self-reported consumer purchase intent and action taken as a result of an ad.

MPA’s goal is for the data to be available within six to eight weeks of the distribution date for weeklies and eight to 12 weeks of the distribution date for monthlies. MPA wants to start with the 200 biggest titles, with the idea of developing predictive modeling to shorten the timetable and expand the number of titles measured.

Eight Reasons Plagiarism Sucks
By Jack Shafer
March 7, 2008
http://www.slate.com/id/2186029

Readers have stormed my inbox, accusing me of "picking nits" in the latest of my two columns about the plagiarism of New York Times reporter Alexei Barrionuevo (Feb. 27 and March 5). One reader found my charge "hyperactive." Another insisted that Barrionuevo's lifting from Bloomberg News was akin to "repeating the bus schedule," hence no foul. Another ridiculed me, saying I exist inside an "echo chamber" of journalists, academics, and bloggers who "care about this crap."

As I read that last note, I realized that I needed to explain in detail why plagiarism matters and why journalists, academics, and bloggers are right to care about it. In order of importance, here are my eight reasons plagiarism sucks:

It swindles readers. One of my correspondents mistakenly thought that what disturbed me most about plagiarism was that it robs other writers of their labors. That's the least of my problems. Plagiarism burns me up because it violates the implied warranty that comes with every piece of journalism. Unless qualified with citations or disclaimers such as "compiled from wire reports," news articles are supposed to be original work.

New York Times Accepts Nielsen as Sole Advertiser for August Issue of Play
By Dylan Stableford

http://www.foliomag.com/2008/new-york-times-accepts-nielsen-sole-advertiser-august-issue-play

In a first, the New York Times today announced that it has accepted Nielsen as the sole advertiser for a special August issue of Play, the Times’ quarterly sports magazine.

The sponsored issue—dedicated to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing—marks the first time the paper has accepted a sole advertiser for any editorial product. The Times will publish the issue on August 3 in addition to its four scheduled issues in 2008.

Play is distributed in the Sunday New York Times, which has a circulation of 1.5 million.

MPA Announces New Measurement Initiative to Compete with TV, Web
By Dylan Stableford
March 10, 2008
http://www.foliomag.com/2008/mpa-announces-new-measurement-initiative-compete-tv-web

The Magazine Publishers of America—an association for an industry that has struggled in recent years to develop a way to deliver magazine engagement numbers for advertisers used to the immediacy of the Web and overnight viewership of television—today announced a “major initiative” aimed at improving its measurement of magazine audience.

The MPA’s plan includes a proposal for new audience-based metrics that count “exposure,” “engagement” and “action-taking” as a result of ad placement.

According to the MPA, “exposure” would include “syndicated issue-by-issue data and key demographics such as age, gender, income, ethnicity and family status.” Engagement would be based on issue-by-issue recall measurement for individual ads, while the “action-taking” metrics would be self-reported consumer action numbers—including purchase intent—as well as how many consumers go to an advertiser’s dedicated landing page on the Web.

Apology for royal scoop of the year
By Barbara McMahon, Maggie Brown and Tim Dowling

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/mar/10/pressandpublishing.television

The Australian magazine that unwittingly broke a media blackout on Prince Harry fighting with the British army in Afghanistan has published an apology today in its latest issue. Pacific Magazines, the publishers of New Idea, said it regretted what happened, but the magazine was not aware an embargo existed.

The Australian gossip weekly has been at the centre of a media furore since it emerged that it was the source of reports that the third in line to the throne was on deployment in Helmand Province. The story stayed on the magazine's website until it was reprinted in the German magazine Bild and then posted on his site by Matt Drudge.

There has been much mirth in the Australian media about Harrygate. The controversy has certainly given New Idea - which prints celebrity gossip, recipes and real-life stories - a higher profile than it could have dreamed of. But it is also embarrassing that no one at the glossy, nicknamed No Idea, knew the value of the story or that a debate had been going on for months about Harry's deployment to Afghanistan.

Memo Pad

NUMBERS, PLEASE: After eight issues, how's Portfolio selling? The answer has been guesstimated by nearly every magazine executive inside and outside Cond? Nast. Sources close to the magazine with access to its closely guarded circulation data say the title since the beginning of the year has sold around 30,000 copies an issue on newsstands, with a sell-through rate in the upper teens. Executives both within and outside of Cond? had put the magazine's sell-through rate as high as 18 percent to as low as 8 percent. Meanwhile, Portfolio's subscriptions are said to total over 300,000 to date.

POWER TRIP: Barack Obama's camp was quick to show senior adviser Samatha Power to the door for calling Hillary Clinton a monster last week. Not surprisingly, the Harvard Pulitzer Prize-winning author has been keeping a low profile since last week's brouhaha. But apparently she is not above talking smack about herself. In an interview in the current issue of Amtrak's Arrive magazine, Power recalled her surprise at being invited to give a commencement speech in 2006: "Inexplicably, you chose me, a woman who was a decidedly average student in law school, who never took the bar exam and who, despite shelling out 100,000 bucks, still can't quite decided what she wants to do with her life. I can't imagine why, after three years in law school, any of you would identify with these particular qualities."

VROOM, VROOM: Ferrari has struck a deal with Cond? Nast Contract Publishing (CNCP) to coproduce a magazine entirely dedicated to the high-performance Italian luxury car brand. According to the carmaker, Ferrari will consolidate its previous publishing activities into one global publication, which will be "editorially ground-breaking, with content specifically aimed at those high-income individuals who are owners of Ferrari cars around the world."
