And Ed’s all sniffly. Does that mean spring’s coming?!

Meet Ed's Latest Trust Fund Baby!
*******

Kourtney Jason, who's interning for free at Seventeen, is Ed's newest Trust Fund winner! Loads of talented interns applied, but Ed knew he had the right gal when she told Ed all about her dream to work in the magazine industry. He was more than happy to fork over the dough to help fund her unpaid internship in NYC—she'll receive a cool $1,000. Many congrats, Kourtney!

BTW, Ed doesn't endorse the random non-Ed advertisement you see at the top of the newsletter. It's just what happens when you use a free e-newsletter service.

1. WWD
Extending the House?

Is Cond? Nast Publications eyeing Dwell? Though some might argue the company has its hands full with its homegrown shelter titles — in recent months, it's folded House & Garden, expanded Vogue Living, and seen its three-year-old launch Domino struggle to weather a category-wide slump — sources close to the company said acquisition talks with Dwell were on.

The San Francisco-based magazine has remained independent under founder and owner Lara Hedberg Deam. Michela O'Connor Abrams, president and publisher, told WWD, "I have not been involved in any discussions with Cond? Nast." A spokeswoman for Cond? Nast, which also owns WWD, declined comment.

Cond? Nast chairman S.I. Newhouse Jr. has praised the magazine to employees, said several people privy to the conversations. One person familiar with the negotiations said they began in December and quoted the figure of $30 million as an asking price.

Glamour Fires Male Blogger After Readers ‘Pulverize’ Him

Glamour has fired its controversial “Man Needs a Date” blogger after the site was inundated with comments from outraged readers.

In a note posted on Glamour.com, the magazine explained its rationale for removing the blogger, Mike Cherico, from the site: “Our ultimate goal here is to open a productive conversation about men, sex, love and dating; clearly, that can't happen when the majority of readers would like to pulverize the blogger.”

The latest swath of vitriol for the Los Angeles-based Cherico—a high school English teacher who had blogged as a sort of “serial-dater” for Glamour since 2007—seemed to stem from a post he wrote about a date, in which he says he left a woman who appeared to have a cold sore. The woman launched a blog to counter Cherico’s version of the date, which was then linked to his post in the comments section.

AMI’s Bad Moody’s

IT'S a race against the clock for American Media, publisher of the Star, the National Enquirer, Shape and Men's Fitness, following a downgrade by Moody's yesterday on the publisher's approximate $1.08 billion in debt.

The downgrade was prompted by "heightened concern that American Media's liquidity profile and weak free cash flow prospects will likely be insufficient to repay the company's maturing debt in 2009," according to Moody's

Although over $400 million of the debt isn't due until early next year, a lot is riding on the current fiscal quarter, because the mountain of debt has now moved to "current" debt.

Magazine publishers are once again trying to wean media buyers from circulation models to new models that measure their success based on audience engagement.

On Tuesday, following a year of discussions between magazine executives from Hachette, Meredith, TV Guide, Time Inc., and others, the Magazine Publishers of America (MPA) and consultants McKinsey & Co., the MPA announced a new initiative to introduce readership metrics that are closer to TV, radio and Web than current circ-based measurements.

In the new system, magazine readers would be measured on an issue-by-issue basis to exposure and demographics such as age, gender, ethnicity, income and family status; engagement with particular attention to individual ad recall; and self-reported consumer purchase intent based on reader response to advertising.
