Mag Industry Headed Toward ‘Period of Consolidation’
By Jason Fell

http://www.foliomag.com/2008/mslo-ceo-mag-industry-headed-toward-period-consolidation

During an afternoon session at the McGraw-Hill Companies’ annual Media Summit on Wednesday, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia president and CEO Susan Lyne spoke on a number of magazine publishing-related topics, including her prediction that the industry is heading toward a “shake-up,” during which a number of magazines will fold.

“We’ve seen three or four years of a robust ad market,” Lyne said. “Less than established brands, with poor circulation numbers, have survived because there are a lot of ad dollars out there. This will be a period of consolidation and a number [of magazines] will fold.”

Blueprint, Martha Stewart’s personal lifestyle spin-off, folded in December.

Three Magazines that Deserve Better Fates

According to an adage in this business, there should be no cheering in the press box. Journalists should always remain impartial and unsentimental while working.

Still, as a longtime media maven, I confess I'm rooting for three magazines -- U.S. News and World Report, the Sporting News and Fast Company -- to make it. What they may lack in publicity, they can make up for in terms of quality. They all have a lot to offer discriminating readers.

Not Just Bourbon Street

News magazines have thoroughly brought the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina's devastation on New Orleans to life, but W wanted to showcase the people who embody the lively spirit of the Big Easy in a 60-page photo essay for its April issue.

Photographer Bruce Weber, along with stylist Karl Templer (who is said to be in talks to join Interview as creative director), shot supermodel Karen Elson and New Orleans' restaurateurs, musicians and otherwise colorful personalities that have rarely been featured in stories about the city. "Obviously, Katrina is and always will be a part of the history and future of New Orleans," said W creative director Dennis Freedman, of the shoot.

"The point of the story is to show people who haven't been spotlighted in the media in the past." Among those shot were New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees; legendary former quarterback Archie Manning, father to the NFL's Eli and Peyton; chef Leah Chase, and students at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. "[Weber] is the photographer who best captures the humanity and personality and the heart and soul of a person," added Freedman. Weber seems to be a fan of Southern souls: the photographer also shot a portfolio of Mississippi for W in 1997.

There is Growth Out There

It's not news that 2008 will be a tough year on the advertising front, but not everyone appears to be feeling the economic pinch. Growth has led People StyleWatch, a Time Inc. fashion and beauty title, to hire its first advertising director. Stacy Callahan comes to the magazine after more than five years at Marie Claire, where she served as executive fashion and retail director. Callahan will report to publisher Michelle Myers, who said more than 30 new advertisers, including American Express, L'Or?al and Ann Taylor, have signed on so far in 2008. Ad pages are up 28 percent through the May issue and the title sold, on average, 548,600 copies at the newsstand during the second half of 2007, according to a spokeswoman. People StyleWatch is published 10 times a year, with a rate base of 650,000.
