******* As magazines and newspapers hunt for the new thing they need to be to thrive in the Internet era, some find that part of the answer lies in the old thing they used to be. Publications are rediscovering their archives, like a person learning that a hand-me-down coffee table is a valuable antique. For magazines and newspapers with long histories, especially, old material can be reborn on the Web as an inexpensive way to attract readers, advertisers and money. Sports Illustrated, which faces fierce daily, even hourly, competition with ESPN, Yahoo Sports and others, has something its main rivals do not: a 53-year trove of articles and photos, most of it from an era when the magazine dominated the field of long-form sports writing and color sports photography. American Media Inc. faced some disappointing news last week, regarding the ratings downgrade by Moody's. However, chief executive officer David Pecker recently received a vote of confidence from the company when it extended his contract for one more year, beginning April 18. Pecker's compensation will remain the same, with an annual base salary of $1.5 million, a possible annual cash bonus of up to $250,000, as well as country club dues, membership fees and car and driver expenses.
3. MediaWeek
Belvoir Media Group will relaunch MaryJanesFarm, a lifestyle magazine focused on environment and the farm-centric life of namesake founder MaryJane Butters, with a spring issue. The title will guarantee a rate base of 100,000. Belvoir will publish MaryJanesFarm four times in 2008 and six times in 2009, with the aim of growing the rate base to 300,000 to 400,000 in three years, said John Pagliaro, who has publishing responsibility for MaryJanesFarm along with Belvoir sister title Mary Engelbreit’s Home Companion. Butters published nine issues of the magazine on her own before approaching Belvoir to take it over, the company said. Aimed at health-conscious, environmentally aware women ages 25-49, the title will target makers of organic food, clothes and personal care products to advertise; Organic Valley Coop is a launch advertiser. That the magazine industry, struggling as it may be, is nonetheless doing serious damage to the environment was the conclusion of the four speakers at the "Can We Make A Green Magazine" panel held in FIT's Katie Murphy Amphitheatre Thursday night. The discussion, organized by Catherine Talese and Michael Grossman, photography director and designer director at The Society of Publication Designers, respectively, featured presentations by Todd Paglia, executive director of ForestEthics, Scott Stowell, design director of Good and proprietor of design studio Open, Gary Cosimini, business development director for Adobe, and Frank Locantore, director of Co-op America's Magazine Paper Project. Paglia spoke first, admitting, "Magazines are not the worst use of paper, nor the largest." However, the medium is responsible for the destruction of 200 million trees worldwide per year, 63 million in the United States alone. Paglia also took a shot at the industry's "Green issues." "I cringe every April when all those Green Issues come," he said. "I liked it the first time, even when they were printed without recycled paper. But now it's the third time and they still aren't using it," citing Sports Illustrated and Vanity Fair as offenders. Were the other three any more positive? MORE ONLINE

People magazine is working to reclaim its youth, says an insider with direct ties to the magazine. Not only is Larry Hackett’s rag moving up the book’s closing time – pulling it back 12 hours, so it will now close Tuesday evening, not Wednesday morning – but they’ve enlisted the help of a crop of veterans to shake things up. Because change always comes from industry stalwarts. The shift was announced during a Friday staff meeting, and includes the import of helping hands Jane Nicholls, editor of Australia’s Who tabloid (also a Time Inc. title), as well as People en Espa?ol chief Peter Castro, who spent 18 years at People proper; Star veteran and short-lived VH1 staffer David Caplan, who joined People in September, is also involved in the revamp. (It’s unclear whether Nichols and Castro are just lending their services temporarily, or plan to stay on permanently. We’re guessing the former.) Not that all the changes to make the magazine “look younger” are sitting well with staffers: Longtime reporter Ashley Williams is said to have decamped for ESPN The Magazine, while, according to our source, “a lot of the younger people [on staff] are over it.” MORE ONLINE

SI Vault, the new online home for Sports Illustrated's archive, has been a long time in the making. Fifty-four years, to be exact. The site, which launches in beta form today, will contain every scrap of content the magazine has published since its launch in 1954 -- a cache that includes some 150,000 articles and 500,000 photos. Users will be able to flip through digitized versions of the magazine, including ads. They'll also be able to slice and dice the content with specific criteria -- to find, for instance, every five-set Wimbledon final ever played -- and scour the web for clips with the aid of Truveo, AOL's video search engine. Meanwhile, SI editors will constantly be trawling back issues for old stories with fresh relevance to the day's news to post on the dynamic home page and topic pages. MORE ONLINE
7. The New York Observer
Last night, at Columbia's journalism school, Joanne Lipman said that three years ago she got a call from Si Newhouse. She met with him, had lunch, and loved the conversation so much she would have been perfectly satisfied with her life even if she'd been struck by a truck on her way out the door of his apartment building. "I remember I showed up at his apartment," she said. "He opens the door, he's wearing his New Yorker sweatshirt, he leads me to this table. Very small, no butler service, nothing fancy. We sit down to lunch and he opens the conversation by saying 'Cond? Nast is thinking about starting a business magazine. What do you think?' "My answer is hell yeah. It wasn't hell yeah, but I think I said, 'Oh my God, yes!' I said not only should Cond? Nast start this, but Cond? Nast is the only company that should be starting this magazine."
