Cond? Nast Names 2 for European Ventures
By RICHARD P?REZ-PE?A
March 18, 2008
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/18/business/media/18conde.html

Both the editor and the publisher who ran Interview magazine for almost two decades will join Cond? Nast to help guide one of its fastest-growing businesses, the European editions of Vanity Fair, the company said Monday.

Sandra J. Brant and Ingrid Sischy will become international editors of the European Vanity Fairs, their names appearing in each magazine’s masthead just below the top editor’s.

Jonathan Newhouse, chairman of Cond? Nast International, said that “literally within a minute of learning that they were available,” he began trying to reach them to discuss new positions. He said, “I feel it’s a real coup for Vanity Fair internationally to have them.”

Slate to launch business site, "The Big Money"

Slate, the online news and opinion magazine owned by The Washington Post Co (WPO.N: Quote, Profile, Research), plans to join a bustling business news market with an analysis and commentary site expected to launch this summer.

"The Big Money" aims to use wit and irreverence to explain the arcana of Wall Street, the same way Slate has done with general and political news, Editor James Ledbetter told Reuters in an interview.

"We're reaching a different audience, a general interest site for people who have an interest in money and financial affairs and economics ... but not specifically or necessarily who work in the finance industry," he said.

VOGUE'S BLACK ISSUE
By Brian Marsh
March 17, 2008
http://radaronline.com/exclusives/2008/03/vogue-lebron-james-african-americans.php

The cover of the current issue of Vogue, featuring LeBron James and Gisele Bundchen, is proving controversial with some African Americans. While no one questions the historical importance of James' cover appearance—he's the first black man ever to be so featured—word in the black blogosphere is that the cover plays into the old stereotype of the black man as a savage in search of a prized white woman. Some have gone so far as to say it evokes the dreaded imagery of King Kong, and question the choice of photo when a less highly-charged alternative was available. This isn't the first time blacks have taken issue with Vogue's cover shots in recent times. Did editrix Anna Wintour's weekend with Bob Marley teach her nothing?

CosmoGirl magazine is holding a virtual prom on March 27 at its CosmoGirl Village in the virtual world There.com, which first appeared in November, and several of its corporate partners are also invited.

ABC Family will show video trailers for its reality series America's Prom Queen at the event, and Acuvue Contact Lenses will be featuring its colored lenses for avatar makeovers at the prom.

“Prom is a big deal and has always been for our readers,” said Keith Gordon, associate publisher, marketing for CosmoGirl. “We know that young women are going into the virtual world, so we wanted to have an event presence there like in the real world.”

Jury Still Out on Future of Newsweeklies
By Jason Fell

Time and Newsweek made major changes in 2007, but time will have to tell if they were positive moves or just more steps toward decline, according to the 2008 State of American News Media report, conducted by the Project for Excellence in Journalism.

The 700-page report—which analyzes media outlets including magazines, newspapers, radio and television—was released today.

Time shifted its publication date to Friday, cut its circulation and redesigned its magazine. Newsweek redesigned, too, and broke free of its former online home under then MSNBC.com banner.

Not Just for Wonks Anymore: Political Mag Gets Makeover
By Peter Carlson
March 18, 2008
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/03/17/AR2008031702617.html

Politics magazine publishes many fine articles, but the most astonishing, amazing and entertaining thing about the magazine is the ads.

Flip through the March issue and you quickly come to an ad illustrated by a photo of a wood-paneled sitting room where three animal heads are mounted on the wall like hunting trophies. But they're not the heads of deer or moose. They're the heads of donkeys.

"We bag the big ones," the headline reads. "And we're ready to add your Democrat to our collection."

ABC Pushes Mags to File Sales Numbers Faster
By Lucia Moses
March 17, 2008
http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/recent_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003726585

Responding to media buyer frustration over the pokey pace of postings, The Audit Bureau of Circulations board last week took a step to get magazines to file their topline sales numbers faster to ABC’s online Rapid Report service.

ABC is expected to announce March 18 that the board approved a recommendation from its magazine buyers’ advisory committee that weeklies and monthlies file initial postings no later than three and seven weeks, respectively, after their on-sale date.

Buyers have been frustrated over the lack of filing uniformity among magazines, some of which don’t report their sales estimates until 10 weeks after their titles go off sale.

NEW HOME: On Jan. 24, Cond? Nast International chairman Jonathan Newhouse received a call from Fabien Baron, who told him that he would be resigning from French Vogue to head to Brant Publications — publisher of Interview, Art in America and The Magazine Antiques — as an editorial director. After Newhouse got off the phone, he called Ingrid Sischy. "As soon as I heard, I immediately wanted to talk to her," Newhouse said. "I've known her for 10 to 12 years. We see each other at the shows and stay at the same hotel in Paris."

EMAP'S NEW CEO: There's a new chief executive at Emap Communications, the B2B publisher that will soon belong to Apax Partners and the Guardian Media Group. Eden Bidco, the company formed by the two parties to acquire Emap Communications, on Monday tapped David Gilbertson as the company's ceo, effective March 20 when Eden Bidco's acquisition of Emap Communications is set to be completed. In December, Eden Bidco agreed to acquire the company for 1 billion pounds, or $2 billion at current exchange.
