******* PORTFOLIO TURNS A PAGE It was high noon Wednesday and time for that annual ritual: the announcement of the American Society of Magazine Editors' National Magazine Award finalists — causing editors to either avoid rivals' gazes for the rest of the day or to shamelessly gloat at least until the actual winners are revealed on May 1. And while there were the usual suspects this time round — The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, National Geographic — there were enough surprises to make things interesting come the black-tie ceremony at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Look at Radar and Portfolio, two titles that face skepticism among media watchers, but that evidently more than pass muster among the peer judges for the awards. Radar, a magazine that is in its third permutation, was nominated for the first time in the prestigious general excellence category, for circulation between 100,000 and 250,000. Portfolio, the Cond? Nast startup that has been beset with bad press, was nominated for best magazine section. The New Yorker and New York, stalwarts of recent years, continued to lead with 12 and nine nominations, respectively. Vanity Fair was strong with six nominations, followed by GQ and National Geographic with five apiece. Esquire, which was nominated seven times last year and won once, did not have as much luck this year, with only one nomination. MORE ONLINE

They don't call 'em "bundles" for nothing. If you're a celebrity with a baby bump, what to expect when you're expecting is mega money - if you're lucky enough to sell their pictures. We're headed into a bumper season of baby buggies. Halle Berry has welcomed daughter Nahla last Sunday, the day after Jennifer Lopez prepped month-old moppets Max and Emme for their first photo shoot. While J.Lo's love don't cost a thing, the snaps of her duplicate darlings sure do. Estimates run from $4 million to $6 million for the cover shoot that hit People.com at 7 a.m. Thursday morning. It would seem the most incidental of choices: Before boarding a recent night flight across the Atlantic Ocean, I stepped into a newsstand at John F. Kennedy airport and left without buying a single glossy gossip magazine for my trip. Planes are my top favorite place in which to indulge in the brain-cleansing pleasures of People, US Weekly, In Touch, and even the occasional Star magazine. But on this particular flight -- on my way to an indulgent (if not brain-cleansing) vacation, no less -- all I could do was stare at my candy-colored cover choices, recognize in some dazed way that I didn't know what a Heidi or a Spencer was, and proceed to the register with only a bottle of water and the Atlantic Monthly. By the time I boarded a return flight a week later, the next issue of the Atlantic Monthly was on the stands, bearing on its cover an image of embattled pop tart Britney Spears; it sat next to a new issue of US Weekly, whose cover bleated news of an interview with presidential candidate Barack Obama in which he refused to say whether or not he wears boxers or briefs; a few days later, US published an online interview with Camille Paglia, in which she held forth on Howard Wolfson, Harold Ickes and Hillary Clinton's "60 Minutes" appearance. What the hell has happened to our national gossip business? In the past decade, the rag trade had exploded, bringing vaguely shameful joy to millions of transatlantic travelers, subway commuters, grocery store shoppers and those languishing in doctors' offices. But now it seems a confluence of events has changed the manner in which America gobbles its vapid information about celebrities. The pleasure we take in snurfling through the trash bins of those more rich and famous than we seems to be waning, leaving me a little sad -- bereft of mindless reading material when hanging out in major transportation hubs -- but perhaps, at the end of the day, just a little less dumb. The list of finalists for the 2008 National Magazine Awards—the magazine world’s equivalent of the Oscars—is out, and the New Yorker leads the field with 12 nominations. Adam Moss’ New York magazine—which snagged five awards out of its seven nominations in 2007—received nine. Shockingly, perennial contender Esquire—which garnered seven nominations last year—received just one. Twenty-four other titles received multiple nominations, including Vanity Fair (6), GQ (5), National Geographic (5), The Atlantic (3), Popular Mechanics (3), T: The New York Times Style Magazine (3), The Virginia Quarterly Review (3) and Wired (3). Aperture, BusinessWeek, Domino, the Economist, Field & Stream, Gourmet, Harper’s Magazine, Martha Stewart Living, Men’s Health, Mother Jones, the Nation, New York Times Magazine, People, O, The Oprah Magazine, Slate and W each received a pair of nods.
