Cosmo to Launch Bikini-Clad Issue
By Lucia Moses
March 20, 2008

Cosmo is planning the mother of all bikini shoots that’ll expose more than just women’s bodies. The Hearst Magazines title plans to assemble 1,200 bathing beauties at Miami’s Nikki Beach April 18 and take an aerial shot of them spelling out “Cosmo” that will run as a four-page spread in the August issue. The magazine was inspired by a similar stunt by its Australian edition in 2007.

Old Navy and Nivea, also are getting plenty of exposure, through print ads, Cosmo’s Sirius radio show, online video and banners flown at the shoot. Old Navy will donate the bikinis while Nivea will sponsor a sweepstakes for a winning trip to Miami for the shoot and host Webisodes of the event on its Web site.

“We’re going to break a Guinness World Records, and we’re doing it in a big way,” said Donna Lagani, senior vp, publishing director, Cosmopolitan Group. Both sponsors made multimillion dollar commitments, she said.

Consumer Magazine Ad Share Up Slightly
By Jason Fell
March 20, 2008
http://www.foliomag.com/2008/consumer-magazine-ad-share-slightly-2007

The consumer magazine segment saw the highest increase in advertising revenue share of non-digital media categories in 2007, according to TNS Media Intelligence.

In 2007, consumer magazine ad share reached nearly 18.5 percent, up only slightly from 17.5 percent in 2006. U.S. Internet online display advertising (not including search) also saw a share growth of one point—from 6.4 percent in 2006 to 7.4 percent in 2007. The outdoor category also saw a slight increase.

Consumer magazine advertising share is up about 2 percent from 2004. The Magazine Publishers of America—in an announcement released today citing the TNS data—attributes the bump to its Magazine Marketing Coalition's aggressive magazine marketing and advertising campaign, calling it a milestone for the group. The coalition was launched in 2005.

Goldman’s New ‘List’
By Keith J. Kelly

FORBES magazine, which has lost two top editors to cable TV in recent months, has now lost the editor who compiles its popular Celebrity 100 list.

Lea Goldman, a senior editor, is joining Joanna Coles at Marie Claire to be the features editor - a new job at the Hearst-owned magazine. Goldman starts the new gig on April 1, a Hearst spokeswoman confirmed.

Matt Miller, who took over the task of running the Forbes 400 when Peter Newcomb was poached by Graydon Carter's Vanity Fair a year and a half ago, will now add the Celebrity 100 to his domain as well, a source said.

Dangerous Curves

Playboy is something of a flop as a public company. What would make Penthouse any different?

Former Penthouse editor Mark Healy recalls a heated conversation last spring with his then boss, Penthouse Media Group Chief Executive Marc Bell, who was angry about a magazine item that tweaked a celebrity. "What's this damned Howard Stern story doing in here?!" fumed Bell. Healy considered the piece innocuous. Bell thought it was inflammatory enough to anger Stern, who frequently hosts Penthouse Pets on his radio show. Healy later quit because of Bell's meddling.

Bell, 40, has given Penthouse, for decades one of the most explicit men's magazines, a "softer focus," as he puts it. The cover shot is more conservative than most images in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue. Bell has spent $8 million on the redo after buying Penthouse and related properties out of bankruptcy for $52 million four years ago. The gussying up is mainly for Wall Street. Bell hopes Penthouse Media Group will raise $250 million in stock in an initial offering, perhaps in the summer.

At Last

Karl Templer has finally signed on to be creative director at Interview. Templer, who styled a Bruce Weber photo essay on New Orleans for April's W, finalized the deal to join the magazine Thursday. WWD reported early this month that Templer was in talks to join Interview, but he had to sever relationships with several magazines in the U.S. in order to take the job. A spokeswoman for Interview said Templer will continue to work with his fashion clients and select editorials. He will join Interview in June, but will consult on earlier issues.

Interview also appointed Rebecca Sinn as entertainment editor, a new position. Sinn was most recently talent director for the Web site Fifth Medium and was formerly features associate of Vanity Fair.

Meanwhile, September may be the official relaunch of the title under co-editorial directors Glenn O'Brien and Fabien Baron, but in the meantime the first cover of the post-Ingrid Sischy and Sandy Brant era will feature Maggie Gyllenhaal. For the May cover, the actress was shot in London (since she was on location there for a film) by photographer Bryan Adams. A spokeswoman said this is Gyllenhaal's first cover for the magazine. Sources said Interview first asked Terry Richardson to do the shoot, but he was too busy. The spokeswoman said she didn't know anything about whether Richardson was asked. The May issue hits newsstands the week of April 21.

In order to win a "Chat with an EIC," a one-on-one meeting with an editor in chief, you must buy a raffle ticket. Ticket sales will only be accepted by junior-level editors and recent graduates (defined as two years from your undergraduate or graduate school graduation date). Tickets can be purchased at the Ed2010 happy hour at The Village Pourhouse between 7 p.m. and 8:29 p.m. Tickets are $3 at the event. No one person can buy more than 10 tickets to each raffle. On each ticket, you must write your full name, job title (if not employed, say "unemployed") and email address. Winners will be drawn at random at the Ed2010 Happy Hour at The Village Pourhouse on March 25th at 8:30 p.m. Tickets will also be sold online for $4 each. Online tickets will be incorporated into tickets sold at the event; on the Pay Pal form you MUST include your current job title to prove that you are a junior editor and/or your graduation date from college. Tickets that are incomplete and job title or graduation date is not indicated will NOT be entered into the raffle. Tickets will be sold online until 6 p.m. on the day > of the event. You do not have to be present to win; we will contact you via your email address. If you do not respond within 7 days to the e-mail announcing that you won, another winner will be drawn at random in your place. Ed2010 will send out an introductory e-mail to you and the EIC, and exchange contact information, but will not make scheduling arrangements—that is the winner's responsibility. Meetings are valid for 6 months after winning. In case of unforeseen circumstances, Ed2010 reserves the right to substitute the EIC with whom the winner will meet. (But, seriously, that's not going to happen. Jim and Sally are on board! We just have to cover our butts.)
