Magazine Embeds Glow-in-the-Dark Ad on Cover
By Dylan Stableford

http://www.foliomag.com/2008/magazine-runs-embedded-glow-dark-ad-cover

It’s not embedded Swarovski crystals or shameless Nike plugs, but Vice—the irreverent free glossy with 14 international editions based in New York—has figured out a new way to sneak an advertiser’s product onto its cover: glow-in-the-dark ink

The magazine’s Canadian edition is running an ad for BMW 1 Series—visible only in the dark—on the cover of its latest issue. The ad appears on the magazine’s entire print run—some 55,000 copies.

Vice publisher Erik Lavoie wrote in an e-mail to FOLIO: that “there are no plans as yet” to run a similar ad in the U.S. version.

Hearst Buys Relationship Advice Site Answerology
By Raffat Ali

http://www.paidcontent.org/entry/419-hearst-buys-relationship-advice-site-answerology/

Hearst has bought out online relationships advice site Answerology.com, we have learned, and now confirmed through the company. The site, based in New York City and founded in2005 by Matt Milner, differs from other general Q&A sites like Yahoo Answers and *Amazon’s* Askville, in that it is focused on relationships and marriage advice. In 2006, it received funding from investors including Jim Treacy, a former president and COO of Monster.com.

The site will be part of Hearst Magazines Digital Media. We couldn’t figure out the buying price, but know it is in seven figures. I spoke briefly to Chris Johnson, VP of Hearst Digital, who explained the rationale for buying the site. He said that Answerology’s “like-minded community platform” fits well into its magazine-branded and other online-only digital properties. The Q&A community is highly compatible with the service journalism that most of these magazines practice. The site will be be integrated into each of its 15 magazine sites and standalone sites...founder Milner is coming on with Hearst. Johnson also said that Answerology’s mandate has increased since it was founded to add other areas, and Hearst intends to expand its focus.

One or Two Blips
By Stephanie D. Smith

Financial market turbulence, housing bubble bursts, Bear Stearns collapses — no wonder advertising isn't looking rosy (or that most publishers don't want to go on the record and talk about it). As the end of the first half draws near for magazines, business looks soft. Through April, the latest Media Industry Newsletter numbers show ad pages declined for most fashion titles and the unpredictable economy makes it impossible to predict how things will end up by June, much less the entire year. "Across the board, I don't think it's going to be an easy year for magazines, and publishers are bracing for it," said Shape publisher Sabine Feldmann. One thing's for sure: Many titles that boasted about their best years ever in 2007 will face an uphill battle to increase pages during these turbulent economic times.

Despite the gloomy outlook, publishers remain surprisingly (or characteristically?) upbeat, pontificating on how their brands can withstand the downturn, their cleverness in battling the soft economy and their ability to find business underneath any rock. And some even go on the record to estimate they will post strong gains in the first half. Harper's Bazaar's Valerie Salembier says business at the magazine will increase 9 percent by June over the year before (Lamborghini is a new advertiser. Recession? What recession?). House Beautiful vice president and publisher Kate Kelly Smith predicts her title will post an 11 percent gain in ad pages (so much for a housing bust). Meanwhile, several health-related titles are expecting gains, some significant, by June. At Self, Kimberly Kelleher predicts the magazine will boost pages 5 percent through May and close slightly up through June. Events like its May Beauty Awards and its "Workout in the Park" consumer event helped the May issue to be Self's biggest ever. "Luckily I haven't had my heart in my throat," said Kelleher. "We are really bucking the trend right now. I couldn't pledge that this will continue through the year."

Women's Health brought in 68 more ad pages through April compared with last year, and is poised to increase May's ad page total over last year (publisher Mary Murcko said she just started selling the June issue). Shape, which also had its best year ever in 2007, will post slight gains for the first half, thanks in part to a monster May issue, where the magazine welcomed new advertisers Range Rover and Mercedes-Benz, to name a few. On the men's side, Men's Journal, which is seeing strong spending from imported cars and pharmaceuticals, is expecting pages to increase by 16 percent by the end of the first half. Publisher Will Schenck said the magazine's special health and fitness February issue drove a lot of business. But he also has had to work a little harder: Schenck admitted Men's Journal can court more advertisers than others because it discounts pages (of course, any publishing company that is able to do corporate buys — including Cond? Nast, Hearst and Time Inc. — offer "incentives" to major advertisers when possible. Just don't call it discounting).

Time Inc. Continues to Trim Staff
By Lucia Moses

Time Inc., which has been hit by sweeping layoffs in recent years, has continued to pare its head count in its quest for cost-savings, albeit in smaller ways.

This Old House shed four people in the past few weeks in communications, production and TV production, while at Sports Illustrated, a handful of people were laid off from the title’s Picture Collection archive. (Some of the SI staffers were to be assigned to other positions in the company, a Time Inc. spokesperson said.)

Unrelated to the layoffs, Time magazine also lost a longtime staffer with the retirement of Jan Simpson, who stepped down March 25 after 30 years at the weekly. In a staff memo, editor Rick Stengel said she made history in 2002 when she was named the first African-American assistant m.e. on the masthead.

New Political Magazine Available Exclusively via Ebook
By Staff

http://minonline.com/news/6547.html

Tribune Media Services (TMS), the content syndication and licensing division of Chicago-based Tribune Company, will launch a new weekly political commentary magazine called Opinionated: Voices and Viewpoints on America and the World. Amazon Kindle eBook is the exclusive provider of the new magazine but TMS will retain complete editorial control over the content. Opinionated is essentially a content aggregator, drawing its material from columnists syndicated by TMS, including ten Pulitzer prize winners and two Nobel Laureates. The content will range from social issues, to world affairs to economics.

Steve Tippie, the magazine's publisher and editor as well as TMS VP of marketing and licensing told min, "We syndicate over 60 commentators to various media companies around the world and 27 of them are political. Why not provide them all in one place, especially since the election is coming up?"

The cost of the digital magazine is $.49 an issue and $1.49 monthly. TMS is currently working with Amazon on several other magazines using the same model. Tippie told min to look for a pop culture publication to be announced in the next few weeks.
