HOT PROPERTIES: AdweekMedia Announces 28th Annual “Hot List”
By Business Wire editors

For the first time ever, global news and business bible The Economist shoots to the No.1 spot on AdweekMedia’s annual “Hot List.” Released today, the highly anticipated “Hot List” honors the publications and creative talents that keep consumers coming back to the newsstands. Leaping from its No. 10 rank last year, The Economist marks the biggest jump on the list and proves that news and business titles remain contenders in a market dominated by women’s lifestyle titles.

Now in its 28th year, the complete “Hot List” is available in the March 31st issues of Adweek, Mediaweek and Brandweek and online at www.adweek.com, www.mediaweek.com and www.brandweek.com.

The Economist earns dual honors this year as publisher Paul Rossi and editor John Micklethwait take home the “Executive Team of the Year” award. As other news and business titles struggle to maintain the bottom line, The Economist jumped ahead of the pack under Rossi and Micklethwait’s innovative guidance. With its monumental ad and circulation momentum, the iconic title has established itself as a thought-provoking, global power player that is a must-read for industry leaders.

The perennial game of musical chairs at Cond? Nast Publications has shifted Details' vice president and publisher Chris Mitchell to Wired Media in the same capacity. Mitchell, who had led Detail's business side since April 2004, will oversee Wired's print and online businesses and fills a spot left vacant by former Wired publisher Jay Lauf, who jumped ship to join The Atlantic as publisher last week. Lauf, however, did not have responsibility for Wired.com. Drew Schutte, who was moved to vice president, publisher of The New Yorker in January, was the last top executive to oversee both print and online sales as vice president and publishing director. Lauf had been the magazine's publisher since 2006.

During Mitchell's tenure at Details, ad pages have grown to 1,369 through the end of 2007 from 1,160 in 2004 (so far through April, pages have increased 3 percent over the same four months last year, to 369). However, Mitchell only had oversight of the magazine while at Details, as Details.com is under the Men.style.com umbrella along with GQ.com. Wired's ad pages rose 4 percent last year to 1,334 and, through April, are up 5 percent to 348 pages, according to Media Industry Newsletter.

His move to Wired is a homecoming of sorts, since he worked at the title from 1996 to 2000, rising to the position of advertising director. Mitchell was also associate publisher at The New Yorker from 2001 to 2004. He reported to then-publisher David Carey, who is now group president, publishing director at Cond? Nast, overseeing the Golf titles, Portfolio and Wired Media.

Memo Pad: A GROWING MARKET

Latina magazine has made some major changes this year, including a new logo, a rate base increase to 500,000 and a redesign that is putting more of an emphasis on fashion. To prove the point, editor in chief Mimi Vald?s Ryan is the first editor from Latina to attend New York Fashion Week and she completely rearranged the magazine to put the fashion section near the front. "We are working with established photographers now and incorporating brands like Calvin Klein and Christian Dior," she said, noting that Jessica Alba wore Dior on the March cover.

Advertisers are beginning to take notice, but they want to wait a few issues to see the response to the redesign (which began with the March issue). Latin Media Ventures president Cynthia Lewis said the September issue will probably introduce four or five more high-end fashion ads. Prior to joining Latin Media Ventures, she was the founding publisher of Hearst Magazines' Shop Etc. She also worked as publisher of Harper's Bazaar and Marie Claire.

Last Thursday, Latina and Maybelline New York held its first Opportunities Through Education Scholarship breakfast. Five high school seniors were selected to each receive $10,000 college scholarships.

Glamour Is Chastened After Caddish Remarks by Dating Blogger Incite a Revolt
By Joanne Kaufman

Last July, when Mike Cherico, a Los Angeles high school teacher, began writing a blog about dating for Glamour magazine, he came with a kind of Good Housekeeping seal of approval: he was a buddy of the previous blogger, Alyssa Shelasky, “and readers had adored her,” said Ellen Seidman, a deputy editor at Glamour.

Glamour’s online community had met Mr. Cherico through Ms. Shelasky. Identified as “edgy English teacher,” he was a recurring character in her blog See Alyssa Date. “I had to go to a party at the Playboy mansion and I was dreading it and I thought ‘I’ll bring Mike. He’s always up to do anything,’ ” recalled Ms. Shelasky in an e-mail message. “He’s a blast.”

If perhaps not quite bring-him-home-to-mom material. “I think we had one proper date,” she said. “It consisted of him drinking 15 margaritas and me paying the bill.”

Hopeless Hipsters
By Media City editors

Sometimes the world is a bit too much. From looming recessions to crashing investment banks, from the escalating war in Iraq to the deflating housing market - why not take a break and turn to a magazine that's never turned out an election issue, or even an election article? The latest in cool-kid fashion or make-up artistry might be just what the doctor ordered.

Although certifiably edgy, Paper still knows the value of the beautiful people, the subject of its cover package "64 More Beautiful People," with indie-music darling Joanna Newsom gracing its cover. Their wrap-up profiles the picks of the cool crowd, from the worlds of film, music, art, nightlife, philanthropy and fashion. Some names are still under the radar, like songstress Sia and male model Sean O'Pry. The magazine boasts some of the best production values of the hip set.

BlackBook is for hipsters who want to get past that velvet rope. The music issue proclaims Janet Jackson - "Miss Jackson if you're nasty" - the reigning pop dominatrix. The photos of Jackson trussed up in latex and headgear are supposed to be provocative, but the S&M spread comes across as silly playacting, and the interview with the pop star falls flat.

Yahoo hopes women take a Shine to site
By Jessica Guynn

http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-yahoo31mar31,1,4985261.story

Yahoo Inc. is making a fresh appeal to a key demographic: women. Launching today is Shine, a Yahoo website aimed at women ages 25 to 54. It will delve into fashion and beauty, entertainment, parenting, work and other areas of interest to women.

Yahoo's future is uncertain in the wake of Microsoft Corp.'s takeover bid. But the Sunnyvale, Calif., Internet giant is continuing to launch new products in pursuit of advertising dollars. With Shine, it's banking that its highly trafficked brand, which has created such popular destinations as Yahoo Finance, Sports and News, can make a similar play for women.

Shine will collect content from women's magazines and bloggers in a one-stop shop with a distinctive voice, said Brandon Holley, who joined Shine as its editor in chief from stints at Elle Girl and Jane. Yahoo's Santa Monica-based media group is launching it.
