******* NOT YOUR MOTHER'S RECIPE: Many successful women in business thank their mothers for bestowing valuable life lessons, but Gourmet editor in chief Ruth Reichl believed her success came by living the opposite way her mom did. Reichl told attendees at the annual New York Women in Communications' Matrix Awards that her mother was discouraged from living her dream of becoming a doctor. But unlike wives and mothers from a few generations back, women these days are encouraged to have both a viable career and a family. "I wake up every morning grateful not to be my mother. Grateful, in fact, not to be any of the women of her generation," Reichl told the audience. MARTHA GOES BIG: The aesthetic onslaught of Times Square got slightly more orderly early Monday morning, as two of the video billboards promoted the launch of Martha Stewart's cobranded line with 1-800-Flowers.com. Not far from the seven-story rendering of her face, inside the Nasdaq MarketSite, Stewart herself presided over the opening bell with 1-800-Flowers chief executive Jim McCann and their respective senior staffs. Turnout among Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc. executives was high, including chief executive officer Susan Lyne, who, when asked about the rumors of her pending departure that continued to surface as recently as two weeks ago, said simply: "I can't control them." Welcome to the 2008 FOLIO: 40—the oldest, most comprehensive and most distinguished compilation of its kind. As always, we’ve spent the last year examining the entire industry, as well as a few markets that intersect it, for individuals who best represent an increasingly multifaceted media landscape. The 2008 FOLIO: 40 is not all-inclusive, nor is it meant to be. There are countless success stories that could be on this list from around magazine media. But the individuals here represent the best of what the industry has to offer along with many other inventive minds. MORE ONLINE

Good magazine today announced that Jonathan Greenblatt, co-founder of Ethos Water, was named to the newly-created position of CEO. “He has succeeded both as an entrepreneur at small start-ups and a seasoned executive at larger corporations,” Good founder and chairman Ben Goldhirsh tells FOLIO:. “We see Jonathan helping to bring focus and strategy to help scale the efforts here at Good. This will range from recruitment, fundraising, sales and marketing, to old-fashioned hustle.” After co-founding Ethos Water in 2002, Greenblatt helped sell the company to mega coffee company Starbucks in 2005. Greenblatt served a vice president of Starbucks and has served as an advisor to Good for the last six months. MORE ONLINE

Congratulations to Conde Nast Portfolio as my selection as the most notable launch of 2007, and to Everywhere, Garden & Gun, Heal and Outside's Go as the four runners up for launch of the year. From year to year, many people ask me how I choose the most notable launch but also how I even go about evaluating the hundreds of new magazines launched each year. Hopefully I can provide some clarification. When you read the word notable it may mean several things to you; however, for me, notable does not refer to "probability of success." Many notable magazines of past guides have faded from the newsstands or fallen into obscurity. Based on current market trends, only two of every 10 magazines will live to see their 10th anniversary. For this reason it would seem presumptuous and useless to choose notable titles by predicting their success. Some of the following magazines are already successful, some may see success and some may not even see the newsstand at all next year. Whatever their fate, all of them stand out. MORE ONLINE
