Oh, Shea It Ain’t So

ENTREPRENEUR Media, pub lisher of Entrepreneur magazine, is on the block for $200 million, as longtime owner Peter Shea finally appears to be ready to cash out.

Yesterday, Entrepreneur President and Chief Operating Officer Neil Perlman in a memo to staffers acknowledged that the company is exploring strategic options, which might include an infusion of cash or a sale.

In reality, Entrepreneur has already conducted a first-round auction, staged by DeSilva & Phillips, and sources say they expect to go to a second round.

An odd thing happened after Jacob Lewis was hired as Portfolio’s managing editor back in September: that wacky 17th floor at 4 Times Square, full of firings and bloody exits, began to calm down.

“When he came in, we had been in a period of start-up tumult, and he’s helped move us into the next phase,” said Kyle Pope, Portfolio’s articles editor.

“He’s made the trains run on time in some basic, fundamental way that as a start-up we were having problems with,” said Jesse Eisinger, a senior staff writer.

NY Mag on Matthews: The Excerpts
By Staff

We've got an advanced copy of Mark Leibovich's piece on Chris Matthews, entitled "Chris Matthews, Seriously. (O.K., Not That Seriously)," which will appear in this Sunday's NYT magazine.

Not only is it a great read (typical for Leibovich), but if you're into media gossip...man. This has got good stuff on Matthews rivalries with David Gregory, Keith Olbermann, Tim Russert...and that's just scratching the surface of the gems this piece unearths. Get started after the jump...

he juicy bits: "Did you get a load of Lou Rawls's wife?" Matthews said as he left the spin room. Apparently the Rev. Jesse Jackson was introducing the widow of the R&B singer at the media center. "She was an absolute knockout," Matthews declared. It's a common Matthews designation. The actress Kerry Washington was also a "total knockout," according to Matthews, who by 1 a.m. had repaired to the bar of the Cleveland Ritz-Carlton. He was sipping a Diet Coke and holding court for a cluster of network and political types, as well as for a procession of random glad-handers that included, wouldn't you know it, Kerry Washington herself. Washington played Ray Charles's wife in the movie "Ray" and Kay Amin in the "Last King of Scotland." She is a big Obama supporter and was in town for the debate; more to the point, she said she likes "Hard-ball." Matthews grabbed her hand, and Phil Griffin, the head of MSNBC who was seated across the table, vowed to get her on the show.

Bon Appetit Raises Ads to New Place of Honor

We wouldn't have thought there was much real estate left in magazines still untouched by advertisers, not after Mini USA appropriated the staples in Rolling Stone. But Starbucks has found some.

In the May issue of Bon Appetit, Starbucks takes over the business-side masthead, asking the roll call of the magazine's executives, "What do you like best with your Starbucks coffee at home?"

To read the eloquent answers attributed to them, you have to wonder why these execs aren't working for the editorial side. OK, it's the pay. But their answers really are eloquent!

CosmoGIRL!, Vice Magazine Reach into the Virtual World
By Amy Novak

Despite industry talk that virtual worlds will end up being a short-lived fad, even the traditionally slowly-moving magazines are inching their way into the virtual space. So far, the only two print magazines to make their brands visible in the metaverse are CosmoGIRL! and Vice magazine.

vMTV and Vice announced last week that they have partnered to create the vLES, the virtual Lower East Side, which is an exact replication of the real Lower East Side right down to the interiors of bars, drunks roaming the streets at bar close and the local band scene. vLES visitors can get a band together with their friends, rehearse, play at the Cake Shop or Arlene’s Grocery, invite friends to the bar and get asked to play more gigs depending on the popularity of their show. Real bands seeking another way to gain exposure are also present in the world.

On March 27th CosmoGIRL! held its first ever virtual prom in a virtual world created by There.com. The partners for the event were ABC Family and ACUVUE Contact Lenses. The prom included everything a “real” prom would have, including a virtual prom king and queen competition. Attendees could also purchase virtual and real-world clothing and accessories. The prom was a huge success and There.com is in high demand to create virtual worlds for other big brands such as Coke.

Atlantic Media, owner of The Atlantic and National Journal, is close to selling its controlling stake in 02138 magazine to Sandow Media, WWD has learned. A spokesman for Sandow confirmed that the deal was in its final stages, but said it had not closed.

The Boca Raton, Fla.-based Sandow Media acquired Worth magazine, its first New York property, from Curtco Media in February for an undisclosed price, and also owns the plastic surgery-oriented NewBeauty magazine. The spokeswoman declined to say whether the 02138 staff, which moved just over a year ago from Cambridge, Mass., to New York City, would move to Worth's Midtown West offices, as a source indicated.

Filling the Blanks

While Domino considers spin-offs such as books, television shows and perhaps even a furniture line, its first priority is making sure it has enough staffers to handle the magazine's duties. So it has bumped up two editors and brought in a freelancer to fill out the magazine's masthead. First, Kate Bolick was named Domino's executive editor, the first person appointed to that position since the magazine's inception in 2005. Bolick was previously features editor at Domino and had been a staff editor at The Atlantic Monthly prior to joining the home title. Meanwhile, Ruth Altchek was promoted to features editor from senior editor. Also, Bess Wong was named art director. She and current art director Hilary Fitzgibbons will have the same title. Wong was freelancing at the magazine prior to her full-time gig.
