New York Times Mag Publishes First-Ever Green Issue—But Not on Recycled Paper
By Dylan Stableford
4/18/08
http://www.foliomag.com/2008/new-york-times-mag-publish-first-ever-green-issue-not-recycled-paper

The New York Times magazine is set to release its first-ever “green issue”—a “low-carbon catalog” of ideas for environmentally-conscious living boasting a slew of new advertisers—on Sunday. But, in what’s becoming increasingly common for magazines that publish “green issues”—and increasingly irritating to environmental bloggers and “green publishing” experts that monitor them—it was not printed on recycled paper.

“That would be nice,” Gerald Marzorati, the magazine’s editor, told FOLIO: Friday. “Our printing is a very particular method, and these machines use a very old, not terribly good paper stock. It just wasn’t feasible.” But Marzorati hopes the issue’s message—“micro-level” things individuals can do to create a better environment—will outweigh its carbon footprint.

The New York Times says the advertiser response was “tremendous.” The issue carries 46 advertising pages.

Newsweeklies Continue Long, Slow Print Goodbye
By Bill Mickey
4/21/08
http://www.foliomag.com/2008/newsweeklies-continue-long-slow-print-goodbye

The newsweekly category continues to churn—and cut ratebase. U.S. News & World Report is reportedly the latest to lop a chunk of rate base as well as cut frequency. The magazine adjusted rate base from 2 million to 1.5 million and frequency from 46 issues to 36, according to a Mediaweek report.

The magazine declined to comment.

Newsweeklies, perhaps more than any other magazine sector save for technology titles, have been under constant pressure in recent years to change as the big three (Time, Newsweek, U.S. News) retool their print designs, ratebases, print dates—anything, it would seem, to adapt to the digital age.

Sending in the Marines (to Recruit Women)
By Douglas Quenqua
4/21/08
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/21/business/media/21adcol.html?_r=1&ref=media&oref=slogin

The Marines are looking for a few good women. Actually, they will take as many as they can get. Faced with the difficulty of recruiting during a long and unpopular war, the United States Marine Corps has started marketing itself to women in a concerted way for the first time. It is running ads in magazines like Shape, Self and Fitness, which appeal mainly to female readers, as well as through more mainstream outlets like “American Idol,” where the message is a unisex one of patriotism rather than macho swagger.

The Marine Corps still runs its traditional ads — during National Basketball Association and National Hockey League games, and in magazines like Sports Illustrated and Men’s Fitness — often showing male recruits parachuting from airplanes, wielding big guns, driving heavy tanks and stampeding across the ground.

But now it is also showing a softer side. In the latest campaign, a print ad shows a female marine striking a martial arts pose in front of a crowd of men who are looking up to her as their leader. The tag line: “There are no female marines. Only marines.”

Men's Health Spies Way to Meld Mags, Mobile
By Nat Ives

One of magazines' biggest strengths in the dawning digital age -- that engrossing environment often said to be so conducive to glossy branding campaigns -- isn't much help when the economic downturn is pressing advertisers to cut any ad spending that lacks quick, quantifiable results. Witness magazines' 6.4% slide in ad pages during the first quarter of this year.

But now Men's Health is planning a June/July issue that will test its ability to deliver just such immediate consumer reactions. Every ad in the issue will be camera-ready -- or, should we say, camera-phone ready. Consumers who use their cellphones to snap pics of ads will get promotional bounce-backs from marketers.

"The results -- responsiveness, call to action -- are measurable in a way that's not usually available in traditional print campaigns," said Jack Essig, VP-publisher of the Rodale title. "Given the economic climate, it's the best possible time to go the extra mile and see what this partnership can do."

Vibe Hires

Vibe Media Group's bulking up the ranks. Jozen Cummings trades the luscious ladies of King ("The Illest Men's Mag Ever!) for the Lil Wayne covers of Vibe, where he'll be online editor. He held the same position at King. Erika Ramirez jumps to associate photo editor from photo assistant, while Dionna King parlays her photo internship into Ramirez's old job. There are also three hires on the sales and marketing side, but that doesn't really interest us so we're leaving them out.

Elle’s Reality Show Fashionista Has Staffers Running for the Sick Bay
By Jossip editors

Ever since Robbie Myers and Joe Zee decided they wanted their own television project, the Elle brand has taken hit after hit. While they got Nina Garcia to guest spot on Ugly Betty, the fall out from firing her couldn’t have been the type of publicity they were after.

Then last week, Ben Widdicombe reported contestants on Elle’s reality show Fashionista were “getting under the feet of people who are actually trying to run the magazine”; nevermind the show is being filmed in a fake office.

Now we hear the guest judges Elle has enlisted to grade the contestants keep canceling, which means Elle editorial staffers are being pressured to fill in. Meanwhile, “a number” of senior editors at the mag are “furious” over having to film the show on weekends, two days that are supposed to be a reprieve from the grind. So how are those Elle staffer retaliating?
