AND HIS QUALIFICATIONS ARE?: Star New York Ranger and man-about-town Sean Avery is out to build up his r?sum? this summer — by interning at Vogue, as reported by Page Six the Magazine and The New Yorker. But what does the person dubbed "the most hated man in hockey" for his style of play know about fashion? Well, quite a lot — Avery is a self-confessed clotheshorse who has been known to give girlfriends advice on how to dress, and in interviews has expressed a dream to become a fashion editor after his days on the ice (he'll likely be a big help clearing through the crush of shows). "He says that he prizes his black patent leather Yves Saint Laurent high-tops, 'a lovely cashmere throw from a friend who works at Calvin Klein' and his Philippe Starck machine-gun-shaped lamp," reports The New Yorker's Nick Paumgarten in this week's issue. So how did Avery get the Vogue gig? He wrote a letter to Anna Wintour expressing his desire to work there (presumably his day job helped the missive get some attention). Avery will report to 4 Times Square this summer, though his first day hasn't been confirmed (a Vogue spokesman said it depends on how well the Rangers do in the playoffs). And what, exactly, will he be doing? The spokesman said Avery likely will work with a variety of editors, including European editor at large Hamish Bowles. There's also talk of him working at Men's Vogue. And the spokesman claimed that, like most interns, the 28-year-old Avery will be expected to do traditional assistantlike tasks — making copies and messengering couture gowns, for instance. Interns clamoring for a staff position would eagerly do such tasks to secure a $30,000-a-year, low-level editorial position. Avery clearly won't have the same motivation — his contract with the Rangers earned him nearly $2 million this season.

EYE OF THE BEHOLDER: Italy's advertising watchdog, the Institute for Advertising Self-Discipline (IAP), has banned Tom Ford Eyewear ads from national media. A close-up photo of a woman wearing the brand's sunglasses with a man's finger in her mouth was deemed by IAP to be "markedly vulgar" and, as such, it "transcends the limits of simple bad taste and offends the sensibility" of viewers. In addition, the committee believes the "scene evokes an offending and abusive act against women, which degrades the dignity of the person." IAP also said the sexual innuendo and provocative edge are part of a campaign based on these kinds of images, noting that the brand's Web site itself describes the spring-summer campaign photos as "sexually explicit." Vincenzo Guggino, general secretary at IAP, said the images were banned after publication last month in three magazines, including Italian Vogue. "Fashion companies very rarely present their ads for inspection before they appear in the media," said Guggino. "Our mission is to promote better and more acceptable communication." Tom Ford could not be reached for comment on the ban.

ANOTHER NEW FACE: In Style has named Nicole Vecchiarelli as senior editor, reporting to editor at large Ariel Foxman. She replaces Robin Sayers. At In Style, Vecchiarelli will be responsible for cover stories, features and special packages. She joins the Time Inc. title from Details, where she was entertainment director since January 2007. Before that, she was the entertainment features director at Teen Vogue.

BACK IN: Maybe it was the pregnant glow that did it, but after four years off the list, People en Espa?ol not only put Christina Aguilera back in its annual "50 Mas Bellos" issue, she is also one of its cover girls. Three months after having her son, Max, the Grammy winner was shot for the cover in Los Angeles, wearing a pink Marchesa gown. Salma Hayek, Tony Romo, Javier Bardem and Thalia are among the celebrities featured inside.

Blender Pulls a GQ, Steals From Spin
April 21, 2008

A day after Page Six breathlessly reported how GQ "ripped a spread" straight from the pages of Maxim comes the news that Blender borrowed a Moby quote from rival Spin.

The March 2008 issue of the latter mag features an interview with everyone's favorite vegan in which he says "as far as the very brief affair I had with Natalie [Portman], it's made me the target of a lot of nerd wrath."

The May issue of Blender — Joe Levy's first at the helm — quotes Moby as saying," I was the target of a lot of nerd wrath." A good quote for sure, but worth stealing from your archrival? We think not.

Two media units of Time Warner are teaming up in an effort to turn Essence magazine into a multimedia brand.

The company announced on Monday that the Warner Brothers Television Group would work with Essence, a Time Inc. publication, to redesign its Web site, share content with the syndicated TV show “Extra” and develop new television programming tied to the magazine brand.

Essence will be the latest magazine to try to refashion itself online for a daily, rather than a monthly, audience.
