******* Continuing its strategy to roll out more magazines focused on niches, Forbes announced the launch of ForbesLife MountainTime, a high-end lifestyle title aimed at the Rocky Mountain region’s well-heeled residents. Scheduled to launch July 4, MountainTime will cover local personalities, home design, sporting equipment and events. Unlike other Forbes extensions, this one will be newspaper-distributed via roughly 16 regional papers. MountainTime will publish 20 times a year and target readers in top ski centers like Vail, Telluride, Aspen and Lake Tahoe. Publisher of the magazine is industry vet Don Welsh, who founded Budget Living, which has since folded, and Budget Travel, which is now owned by Newsweek Inc. He also helped launch men’s lifestyle title Outside and its spinoff, Outside’s Go. The editor is Philip Armour, past editor of Outside. MORE ONLINE

When the thought of “eye tracking” comes to mind, one may invariably picture some amalgamation of popular sci-fi flicks—the Matrix, Minority Report, Total Recall—with test subjects wearing cumbersome, Robocop-style headgear to trace eye and head movement. For magazine publishers, these images are edging closer to reality. Today, the clunky headgear has been replaced by cameras that are built into computer monitors. By collecting and analyzing data like “first gaze” and a person’s vision path across a page or screen, publishers can use the information to help design covers, monitor the effectiveness of advertisements and help plan Web site redesigns—and they are beginning to do so. Cond? Nast recently partnered with eye tracking service provider MediaAnalyzer to analyze the effectiveness of its clients’ ads, especially for its long-term advertisers. According to Scott McDonald, Cond? Nast’s senior vice president of marketing research, the partnership enables the company to offer “a unique value add to advertisers in our publications.” Using MediaAnalyzer’s methodology, he says, “helps our advertisers maximize their ROI and determine whether readers are engaged with their ads.” MORE ONLINE

As more marketers cut their print advertising budgets in favor of the immediacy of the Web, magazine publishers are being forced to take bold steps to bridge the gap. The latest: Men’s Health, which announced this week that every ad in the magazine’s July/August issue will be cell phone readable. “Given the economic climate, it's the right time to go the extra mile and explore partnerships such as this one that provide more measurable results for advertisers in addition to an immediate, direct conversation with our readers,” Jack Essig wrote in an email to FOLIO:. “It's also a great marriage of what print can do for digital and vice versa.” The Rodale title is using image recognition-based technology from mobile marketing firm SnapTell to produce the issue. “We were approached with a turnkey platform that made sense for both our advertisers and our readers,” Essig continued. “It's snag-proof—compatible with all mobile devices and carriers.” MORE ONLINE
