******* President Bush best summed up the peculiar juxtaposition of celebrities, reporters and political officials at the White House Correspondents' Dinner Saturday night: "Pamela Anderson and Mitt Romney in the same room?" Bush said during his speech. "Isn't that one of the signs of the apocalypse?" Clearly not, but the random mix of celebrities included everyone from Anderson, Martha Stewart, The Jonas Brothers and Rob Lowe to pols such as former secretary of state Colin Powell, former House speaker Newt Gingrich and former Clinton campaign consultant Mark Penn. But the most fashionable name in attendance was Donatella Versace, who joined Time Style & Design at the event along with her friend Rupert Everett. Before dinner, Versace took in the scene at the Time People/CNN party, and met Meghan McCain, daughter of Sen. John McCain, who attended the dinner with People magazine and planned to write about the event on her blog, McCainbloggette.com. "She's got a great smile and good energy," Versace said of the younger McCain. MORE ONLINE

Maxim editorial director James Kaminsky brought back his number two from Playboy and Maxim — the first time he edited the title — to be the managing editor at Maxim yet again. Lisa Grace joins the magazine from Best Life, where she had been managing editor since 2006. Prior to Best Life, Grace helped launch Quick & Simple, which Hearst Magazines introduced in 2005. Kaminsky also promoted another loyal lieutenant at Maxim: David Swanson was upped to features editor from senior editor. Kaminsky brought Swanson from Rolling Stone to Men's Journal when he edited the Wenner Media men's title. When Kaminsky left Men's Journal last August to helm Maxim, he brought in Swanson shortly afterward.

Though Elle and former fashion director Nina Garcia have not yet settled on the terms of their future working relationship (nor her relationship to "Project Runway," since Elle is contracted to the show through season five), the magazine elevated several staffers, including Garcia's old assistants, to fill the gap. First, Kate Lanphear, senior style and market editor who is said to be a possible successor for Garcia, has been promoted to style director. Joann Pailey, formerly senior fashion market editor, was promoted to market director. Also, Jade Frampton was elevated to a market editor and Malina Joseph has been named fashion bookings editor. A replacement for Garcia, who was fired from her position earlier this month, has not yet been appointed. Meanwhile, three other staffers have followed Garcia out of Elle: Bookings editor Claudine Ingeneri, market editor Helane Crowell and deputy art director Florence Sicard have all recently left the magazine.

Vanity Fair editor in chief Graydon Carter wants to revamp the magazine's Web site to make it "a fun, funny, spunkier version of the magazine." His plan is being carried out with several additions. Vanityfair.com will include regular weekly postings of events and increase its coverage of A-list diners at the Waverly Inn to a few times a month on the restaurant's un-bylined blog. The site also will include more pithy quotes and pictures of socials in party dresses in weekly postings of parties and events. In fact, two stealth reporters — Adam Klappholz, who is assistant to managing editor Chris Garrett, and associate online editor Jessica Flint — were recently seen working the red carpet and picking up tips on covering a party from other social reporters at a Belvedere Vodka event. But two junior reporters can't revamp the site all by themselves. Senior articles editor Michael Hogan has been named executive online editor to oversee the site. Hogan was also the executive editor on Cond? Nast's new spinoff "Movies Rock," which was delivered as a supplement to Vanity Fair's December issue. Also, Hamish Robertson, most recently a multimedia consultant at GQ, has been named online design editor, and Flint was recently promoted to her online job from editorial associate at the magazine. The site has also added guest bloggers including Cindy Crawford, who opines about green issues; Jamie Johnson; Rebecca Guinness, and David Roberts.

Turmoil continues to grip Entertainment Weekly on both the business and editorial sides. Photo Editor Fiona McDonagh is quitting the magazine to join her husband who has moved to London for work. John Korpics, a one-time art director who was eased out at In Style and put in a corporate job, is now overseeing work on EW's new redesign. MORE ONLINE
6. Media Week
The major newsweeklies may be headed down a slow path of decline, but for the second week in a row, Time managing editor Rick Stengel has managed to get people at least talking about the magazine. Last week, it was the April 28 issue cover that used the 1945 photo of Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima to portray the struggle to end global warming, a decision that infuriated some veterans. (Art director Arthur Hochstein substituted a tree for the flag in the photo illustration.) This week brought another eyebrow-raising cover that copied the split-screen concept (of competing players) and tagline of the three-week-old NBA playoffs campaign to illustrate the ongoing battle for the Democratic presidential nomination. The cover features a split-screen image of presidential hopefuls Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. MORE ONLINE

Fifteen years old, topless and wrapped in what appears to be a satin bedsheet in the June issue of Vanity Fair. Did Miley Cyrus, with the help of a controversy-courting magazine, just deliver a blow to the Walt Disney Company’s billion-dollar “Hannah Montana” franchise? Some parents reacted with outrage over the weekend when the television program “Entertainment Tonight” began showing commercials promoting a scoop: Ms. Cyrus, the star of the wholesome Disney Channel blockbuster “Hannah Montana,” had posed topless, albeit with her chest covered, for the Vanity Fair photographer, Annie Leibovitz. Screen grabs of the photo quickly popped up online, sparking a blogosphere debate. “Bonfire anyone?” wrote Lin Burress on her marriage and parenting blog, Telling It Like It Is, referring to the mountain of Hannah Montana retail items — makeup, shoes, clothes — in the marketplace. “Parents should be extremely concerned,” Ms. Burress said in an interview. “Very young girls look up to Miley Cyrus as a role model.” MORE ONLINE

Two men’s magazines are trying to engage their readers more — by increasing their cellphone bills. Rolling Stone and Men’s Health are both testing programs in which readers can take cameraphone pictures of icons on ads, then send them to a certain number. In exchange, they’ll receive more information or an offer from the advertiser. In Rolling Stone’s current issue, five advertisers are running these offers. They include a motorcycle ring tone for Allstate’s motorcycle-insurance program and a video preview of The Discovery Channel’s new season of “Man vs. Wild.” Men’s Health is going even further, saying each full-page advertisement in its July-August issue will have the added feature. Hearst Magazines sold 30 Days of Home, the third of its 30 Days-branded multimedia campaigns, exclusively to Wal-Mart, another sign of advertisers’ hunger for big, exclusive, customizable and distinctive programs. With multiple components, 30 Days of Home is similar to Hearst’s 30 Days of Fashion and 30 Days of Beauty that came before. But while those two had multiple sponsors, 30 Days of Home was built entirely around Wal-Mart, which used the program to promote its new Canopy line of home furnishings. “We wanted to change the perception of product to surprise the consumer that they can buy quality for less,” said Robin Steinberg, senior vp, director of print investment and activation, MediaVest, Wal-Mart’s media agency. “By doing so we were able to integrate the products into each room of their home, providing them with decorating ideas.” MORE ONLINE ************Ed Ad 1 ************ Female seeks same for a great roommate situation in a Brooklyn two bedroom.
