******* ZIFF Davis, which plunged off the bankruptcy cliff in March with a voluntary Chapter 11 filing, is now emerging after working out an agreement with more than 80 percent of its creditors. It has been a dizzying ride for the tech publishing company, which was founded by William Ziff Sr., passed down to William Ziff Jr. and then, when the third generation of Ziff kids decided to go into hedge funds instead of publishing, was sold off to Japanese media company Softbank for over $2 billion in the mid-1990s. The company in April 2000 was sold to Willis Stein & Partners for $780 million - which at the time, just before the Internet bubble burst, looked like a steal. The company forced out CEO Jim Dunning, who tried to bust up the company and sell off pieces. Nasty lawsuits ensued with Willis Stein claiming that Dunning was a lackluster boss who made no sales calls, didn't understand the tech market and built an expensive cigar lounge in the corporate headquarters as the economy was showing its first signs of problems. Incoming American Society of Magazine Editors president David Willey said that while his medium still has a role in its printed form, editors’ ongoing challenge is to figure out how to use the Web to extend their brands. Nevertheless, with their great writing, photography and design, magazines will always be a great way to tell stories, said Willey. “There’s still no substitute for the hold-it-in-your-hand appeal.” Willey took the reins today (April 30) on the eve of ASME’s annual gala to hand out the prestigious National Magazine Awards. He succeeded outgoing ASME president and Glamour editor Cindi Leive, who will remain on the board for two years as ex-officio president. MORE ONLINE

Several top executives at Meredith Corp. are changing jobs in a major shakeup as the company throws more resources behind corporate and cross-platform sales. Jack Bamberger will give up corporate sales to focus exclusively on Meredith 360, the company’s 18-month-old marketing unit that cuts across integrated marketing, magazines, the Web, broadband TV and other platforms. His new title will be chief innovation officer. Joining him will be Jeannine Shao Collins as vp, client solutions, from women’s lifestyle group publisher. Meredith also plucked two publishers to bolster its corporate sales efforts. Michael Brownstein, formerly over the Parenthood Group, is going to corporate sales as a senior vp, returning him to an earlier role in his career. Former Better Homes and Gardens vp, publisher Jan Studin will work under him as vp, corporate sales. As a result of those moves, Family Circle publisher Jim Carr was elevated to vp, group publisher of Family Circle and Better Homes. Carey Witmer, who was associate publisher of Better Homes, will succeed Carr as publisher of Family Circle. MORE ONLINE

Could a woman edit a men’s magazine? Could a man edit a woman’s magazine? Why are women’s magazines shunned by the National Magazine Awards? Why don’t women’s magazines cover politics seriously? Why aren’t they as irreverent as men’s magazines? How has the newsstand crisis affected the way both men’s and women’s magazines approach editorial? Did Vanity Fair know what it was doing with Miley Cyrus? Those were some of the questions raised by a high-profile group of consumer magazine editors at Mediabistro’s third annual dinner and discussion—sponsored, fittingly, by assorted perfume and lotion retailers and Maker’s Mark whiskey—held here Tuesday. During a wide-ranging, often candid discussion, the panel—Glamour editor Cindi Leive, Elle editor Robbie Myers, Marie Claire editor Joanna Coles, Details editor Dan Peres, Maxim editor Jim Kaminsky and Playboy editor Chris Napolitano—addressed some of those topics, and a few more. F+W Publications laid off 30 staffers across the company this week, chairman and CEO David Nussbaum [pictured right] has confirmed. Several of the cuts come from the company's Iola, Wisconsin-based Krause Publications unit. About 80 percent of the layoffs, Nussbaum says, were in central services—including production, IT and facilities. The staffing terminations come on the heels of news that four of six full-time staffers resigned last week from Aircraft Maintenance Technology, a magazine published by sister company Cygnus Business Media. F+W and Cygnus are owned by private equity firm ABRY Partners. Several media companies—including Nielsen Business Media and Ziff Davis Enterprise—have had layoffs this year. Earlier this month, Penton Media announced a company-wide salary and hiring freeze, and ordered a reforecast of all budgets for the remainder of 2008. MORE ONLINE

TV Guide has laid off an undisclosed number of staffers in association with parent company Gemstar-TV Guide's announcement that its stockholders have approved the company's proposed merger with Macrovision Corporation, a TV Guide spokesperson has confirmed. The spokesperson declined to comment on specific terminations, and did not immediately return an e-mail seeking further detail. Gemstar-TV Guide and Macrovision agreed last December to acquire Gemstar for $2.8 billion in cash and stock. Following yesterday's announcement, the merger is expected to take effect May 2. It is unclear whether Macrovision intends to find a buyer for the publishing business, including TV Guide. MORE ONLINE
