Ed's Trust Fund Summer 2008: EARLIER DEADLINE!
*******************
Listen up, up-and-coming Edsters in the city soon for summer internships! Ed is back on his giving spree and is handing out his Ed's Trust Fund for the summer session, and he wants to let you know that the deadline has been moved up to FRIDAY, JUNE 6, 2008. If you're an UNPAID intern at a magazine in New York City this summer, then Ed wants to help you out! Read Ed's Trust Fund rules (aka: the "fine print")—and snatch an application—at www.ed2010.com/ed-campus/trust-fund. (Ed also encourages potential applicants to read the amazing testimonials from past winners on the same web page.) You only need to have your summer internship secured when you apply. The prize? $1,000 to use however you please. (But Ed hopes the winner'll use it to, well, live in this amazing yet ridiculously expensive city!) But don't forget: The deadline is earlier this year: FRIDAY, JUNE 6, 2008!

Psst! If there's a random wacky ad at the top of this newsletter, know that it's not Ed's. It's just what you have to put up with for a free newsletter service..

Crowing Rights

AT LEAST FOR NOW: There were no multiple onstage moments for New York magazine's Adam Moss or The New Yorker's David Remnick this year at the National Magazine Awards Thursday night at Jazz at Lincoln Center — probably much to the relief of their rivals. While each category is judged by different groups, they all seemed to decide to spread the love around this time, avoiding the numerous wins by the two New York-named titles of past years.

In fact, they each only received one award apiece, with National Geographic being this year's big winner with three — for General Excellence, Reporting and Photojournalism. Vanity Fair won two, for Profile Writing ("Pat Dollard's War on Hollywood") and Photo Portfolio (again, its Hollywood one), but other than that, no single magazine dominated. Cond? Nast, which also owns WWD, had the biggest presence of any company, with seven awards.

But a significant number of small or single-title companies, such as The Nation (for Public Interest), Harper's (for Fiction), The Atlantic (for Reviews and Criticism), New Letters (for Essays) and Backpacker and Mother Jones (both for General Excellence) also were recognized, New Letters for the first time.

Troubled technology and video game magazine publisher Ziff Davis Media named Peter Weedfald as president, a new position, as it strives to emerge from bankruptcy by June.

Weedfald most recently was senior vp, chief marketing officer for Circuit City. He also is a vet of Ziff Davis, having spent nine years there in the 1980s, in various senior sales and executive positions at PC Magazine and other titles.

Ziff Davis has had a rough ride since being acquired by Willis Stein & Partners in 2000 for $780 million. Since then, it’s closed several magazines including Yahoo Internet Life and sold off its Enterprise Group unit for about $150 million.

Dykstra Swings Away
By Keith J. Kelly

Former Mets outfielder-turned-magazine entrepreneur Lenny Dykstra is embroiled in a bitter legal brawl with the publisher of Players Club, a financial advice and lifestyle magazine aimed at affluent pro athletes that Dykstra founded.

The finger-pointing by both Dykstra and the publisher, Doubledown Media, centers on cost overruns at the magazine, as well as charges by Dykstra that Doubledown used his name without permission to launch a newsletter and Web site called The Dykstra Report, which isn't connected to Players Club.

"He thinks I'm going to buckle," said Dykstra, referring to Doubledown President Randall Lane. "I don't buckle - I go to war."
