******* WORDS OF WISDOM: Ruth Reichl might recently have led many to believe she disliked her mother after her harsh words in accepting a Matrix Award from the New York Women in Communications — but it certainly got her attention and, now, a book deal. Penguin Press, inspired by Reichl's speech, has signed a contract with her to write a tome about the meaning of motherhood past and present and the lack of opportunities available to prior generations. Penguin plans to publish the book around Mother's Day 2009. Penguin Press president and publisher Ann Godoff also edited Reichl's three previous autobiographical books. TWO NEW FACES FOR TWO ICONS: Thierry Mugler Parfums and Chanel both have new faces. Mugler, a division of Groupe Clarins, on Monday introduced Naomi Watts as the face of its first TV ad campaign for Angel. Sources estimate it will be a $15 million global investment, while Joel Palix, president of Thierry Mugler Worldwide, noted that "little surprises are coming." Palix opened the door to the possibility of reviving Mugler's fashion activities. HEADING SOUTH: Grazia is coming to Australia in a joint venture between Hearst Magazines International and ACP Magazines. This partnership is also behind the Australian editions of Cosmopolitan, Harper's Bazaar and Madison. Grazia will launch later this year, with Alison Veness-McGourty as editor in chief. She formerly had the same title at Harper's Bazaar in Australia. MORE ONLINE

TV Guide today (May 6) continued its high-level shakeup, installing executive editor Debra Birnbaum as editor. She succeeds Ian Birch, who was shown the door last week when the title's sale was completed. Also elevated was Craig Tomashoff, to executive editor, from West Coast bureau chief. In a company announcement, Birnbaum said she would expand on its breaking news coverage of show and their stars and place more emphasis on editorial opinion in its pages. The title's long-term future is up in question, however, as new corporate parent Macrovision Corp., a video technology company, looks to prune the assets it acquired as a result of its deal for Gemstar-TV Guide. The $2.8 billion cash-and-stock deal closed May 2. MORE ONLINE
3. The Guardian
The Economist's bid to appeal to more youthful readers seems to be paying off after two 17-year-olds created a rap about the business title, while a Facebook fan group created by a teenage schoolgirl has enjoyed a surge in popularity. The rap, created by US students Ike Edgerton and Chris Misa under the name Psikotic, is a tribute that includes samples of Economist journalists such as Edward Lucas and Anthony Gottlieb from the title's audio podcasts. The chorus of the rap runs: "He reads the Economist so he can get the gist, its solid competence gives him confidence that his intelligence is correct." MORE ONLINE

In the second half of 2007, the audited paid and verified circulation of consumer magazines fell 1.7 percent from 282.0 million to 277.2 million. The decline is fairly representative of a trend that began seven years ago, which has seen the industry’s paid-verified circulation decline nearly 11 percent since its peak in 2000. To examine why circ levels are too high it requires an in-depth look at several categories of information: The declining universe of audited publications; circ level increase/decrease trends; newsstand contribution to circ levels; and verified, sponsored and other paragraph 6 circ sources. The number of audited paid consumer magazines in the second half of 2007 declined 5 percent to 550—down from 579 a year ago, 590 two years previous and 653 in the second of half of 2000. In the last seven years, the number of audited paid consumer titles has fallen nearly 16 percent. MORE ONLINE

Stephen Colbert's use of the Internet to connect with fans earned the Comedy Central host special recognition as recipients of the annual Webby awards for Web sites and online achievements were announced Tuesday. A special achievement award also went to will.i.am, the Black Eyed Peas frontman behind the popular "Yes We Can" video supporting presidential candidate Barack Obama. And movie director Michel Gondry won a special mention for encouraging filmmakers around the world to recreate their favorite movies — the concept behind his film "Be Kind Rewind" — and share them online. Meanwhile, The New York Times' online unit won eight regular Webby Awards in such categories as news, mobile listings and animation. The Onion satire site won seven, while Web sites for Apple Inc. and National Geographic magazine along with a user-confession site, PostSecret, won four awards each. MORE ONLINE
