Dove 'Real Beauty' Scandal Oddly Unresolved
By Hamilton Nolan

http://gawker.com/389506/dove-real-beauty-scandal-oddly-unresolved

The aftermath of last week's Dove "Campaign for Real Beauty" photo retouching scandal remains unclear. It all started with retoucher Pascal Dangin telling the New Yorker that he had cleaned up photos for the campaign featuring ostensibly "Real" women, which would be a hugely hypocritical move. Dove, their ad agency, and celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz all denied it, saying they did nothing to the pictures except "to remove dust and do color correction." Today, Ad Age tries to decide whether or not the fiasco will hurt Dove—and the company is still stonewalling, while the New Yorker is standing by (most of) its story.

Everyone employed by Dove "declined to elaborate on what the "color correction entailed," and declined to respond by deadline to phone calls or e-mails to a report from a person familiar with the matter that Mr. Dangin had admitted specifically to removing veins from the images of the women," reports Ad Age. Meanwhile, the New Yorker says that the only inaccurate thing in its story is that it said Dangin retouched photos of women in "undergarments," while in fact he retouched women in nude photos—which would mean he worked on Dove's celebrate-your-natural-body Pro-Age ads, shot by Annie Leibovitz.

It's apparent that the company is hoping that the whole thing will blow over with no lasting effects. And it surely may. But with the New Yorker standing firm, it's hard to take Dove at face value.

Let Them See Cake: Bridal Books Revamp

Bridal magazines are pretty if predictable: a cover model resplendent in white, followed by a catalogue of monochrome dresses inside. Two of the category leaders, published by Cond? Nast, are about to unveil changes meant to underscore their differences with readers and advertisers.

With its summer issue, Elegant Bride, a quarterly aimed at affluent brides in their thirties, will issue a crisp, elegant redesign that emphasizes the upscale. Editor Antonia van der Meer updated the logo, replaced the cover model with a cake, stripped off the coverlines, softened the color palette and added the tagline "Weddings Made Beautiful."

Modern Bride, meanwhile, will continue its trend, and sometimes irreverent, coverage of weddings, introducing sex as a regular editorial staple. Wedding-night sex is touted on the cover of the June/July issue; a future issue will look at why a man's sex drive increases after he becomes engaged.

Planning a Web Site, Publisher Buys a Harvard Alumni Magazine
By RICHARD P?REZ-PE?A

A small New York publisher on Friday bought 02138, a magazine for Harvard alumni, with visions of expanding it into social networking and event sponsorship, and then duplicating the operation for each Ivy League school.

Manhattan Media bought 02138 from Atlantic Media, publisher of The Atlantic and National Journal, and the magazine’s young founders, Bom Kim and Daniel Loss, who held a minority stake. The price was not disclosed.

The deal was something of a surprise; Manhattan Media’s involvement had been kept quiet, and published reports said in April that Sandow Media, publisher of Worth magazine, was on the verge of buying 02138, which is named for Harvard’s ZIP code.

In a Twist, Harvard’s 02138 Sold to New York Publisher

The founders of 01238, the irreverent lifestyle magazine for Harvard alumni launched in 2006, have sold the title to Manhattan Media, a community newspaper publisher and owner of Avenue magazine. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Atlantic Media, which had owned a minority stake in 02138, sold its interest, too. Sandow Media, the publisher of Worth magazine, had been close to a deal to buy the magazine, according published reports and a source with direct knowledge of the talks.

The owners of Manhattan Media, which also publishes the New York Press, plan to increase the quarterly’s frequency to six times per year in 2009, as well roll out similar magazines for all eight Ivy League universities.

Magazine Now Trying 14 Percent Harder Online
By Noah Davis

Magazine brands announced 65 new digital initiatives in the first quarter of 2008, according to a report from the Magazine Publisher of America. Everyone from The Atlantic to Wine Spectator got into the game with blogs, podcasts, videos, social networking and all the other good stuff that makes Web 2.0 work. The number was a 14 percent increase from the same time period last year.

Now we all love growth, but fourteen percent isn't much for a medium that's so behind the times. In the first five weeks of Q2, media companies announced 34 new initiatives. In other words, the conquest of the Internet will continue. Slowly.

Bonnier CEO: 'We Don't Want to Be Time Inc.'
By Nat Ives

Time Inc., the country's largest magazine publisher, shocked its industry two years ago when it decided to sell 18 of its magazines, including well-known brands such as Field & Stream, Popular Science, Parenting, Ski and Outdoor Life. CEO Ann Moore argued then that the company needed to focus its resources and attention on larger businesses and areas with better growth potential. When Sweden's Bonnier Group won with a bid north of $200 million, combining the portfolio with its recently acquired 49% interest in Florida's World Publications, it promised to develop its new U.S. beachhead through investment and not budget cuts.

In the 14 months since closing the deal, Bonnier has brought in a bevy of new people -- including four editors in chief just this year. It's created a corporate sales and marketing group, hired its first VP of e-media, and introduced an American edition of Science Illustrated. But business remains decidedly rocky.

Last week, Advertising Age sat down with Bonnier Group CEO Jonas Bonnier, who was visiting New York from Stockholm to attend the National Magazine Awards, for his first interview with an American reporter since the acquisition. He talked about the upside of hard times, the further acquisitions he plans and why magazines don't need the web.
