******* Bonnie Fuller, no longer queen bee at American Media Inc., has something up her sleeve. "My next venture will be in media," she told us when we reached her by phone this evening. "I really can't give you any details... but there's something specific I want to do." She said she'll announce the new endeavor "shortly." She called the decision to leave "100 percent" hers, adding that she was "thinking about the next stage in life and the new, exciting adventure I'll pursue." When we asked her if she would be doing something at an established company (a la Brandon Holley, who jumped to Yahoo) or start her own site (like Tina Brown and her news aggregator), Fuller told us those were "very good questions," but declined to say more. Judging by her tone, we expect she'll have some very good answers much sooner than anyone anticipates. MORE ONLINE

Another chapter in the drama that is Bonnie Fuller's career is coming to a close. The tabloid queen gave up her throne at American Media Inc. on Tuesday, stepping down from her post as executive vice president, chief editorial director after five years. The company said that, as of today, Fuller will be an editor at large at Star and a consultant to AMI chief executive officer David Pecker. Her job — one that netted Fuller a much-discussed $2 million a year plus benefits and perks — will not be filled. The editor had another year left on her contract, which was renegotiated in April 2006. While conspiracy theorists will no doubt have a field day as to the reasons the overtly ambitious Fuller gave in, she insisted the decision to leave was hers and that she had been mulling over quitting for a few weeks. "I felt like I want to go and pursue a new adventure and a new venture," she told WWD. An AMI spokesman confirmed "the decision to resign was Bonnie Fuller's. It was driven by her view that she had accomplished many of the things she has set out to do when she joined AMI in 2003." Fuller also stressed she has a good working relationship with Pecker. Fuller at one time was known as an innovator who had her pulse on the tastes and desires of American women. After editing Cosmopolitan, Glamour and Marie Claire, Jann Wenner hired her in 2002 to become editor in chief of Us Weekly, which she successfully reinvented (with much Sturm und Drang among staff) and made into a picture-driven glossy to take on category leader People. "She absolutely gets the credit for changing the game in the celebrity category. Even People owes it to her," said one former colleague. MORE ONLINE

Remember Wallpaper — that temple to all things sleek, minimal and Swedish? Well, the magazine is trying to step back onto New York's radar again, with former creative director and newish editor in chief Tony Chambers cohosting his first U.S. event with Jim Gold of Bergdorf Goodman this Friday. Artist Anthony Burrill created four covers of the June issue, which was devoted to the theme of work, and Bergdorf's men's store windows will feature displays inspired by the issue. The party also marks the 20th anniversary of the International Contemporary Furniture Fair. The magazine is upping its frequency from 10 to 12 issues starting this year, with July and January 2009 issues. MORE ONLINE
4. Internet Retailer
The publisher of such magazines as Cosmopolitan and Good Housekeeping has announced a deal with mobile technology provider ShopText to enable readers to make purchases, sign up for samples and enter sweepstakes through mobile phone text messages. The Hearst Magazines Digital Media unit of Hearst Magazines has been testing ShopText since the summer of 2006 with CosmoGirl magazine. A promotion in a CosmoGirl issue last summer produced 100,000 ShopText sweepstakes entries, says Susan Schulz, editor in chief of the teen magazine. The magazine also has delivered thousands of samples through the text program and says in a recent promotion more than half of requests came from repeat ShopText users. In the sample promotions, as many as 94% of first-time users who texted the keyword provided all the information to obtain a sample. 30% is considered high for online banner ads, says a ShopText spokesperson. Ads in the magazines provide a text message number and keyword consumers can use to make a purchase, request a sample or enter a contest. Purchases require entry of a payment card number and a personal identification number; to receive a sample or enter a contest a consumer need only confirm her phone number and mailing address via text message. 5. Advertising Age
Bonnie Fuller, the editor most responsible for the rise of celebrity weekly magazines, is leaving her position as exec VP-editorial director at American Media, the publisher of magazines including Star and National Enquirer. Her departure had been rumored for years as American Media's high-profile and expensive bid to remake Star as a glossy competitor to Us Weekly never quite lived up to expectations. Losing more than a job Her latest contract, signed in 2006 to run through March 2009, provided an annual salary of $1.5 million, a minimum bonus of $500,000 each year, a "target bonus" of $1 million, and incidentals such as first-class travel, accommodations at hotels such as the Four Seasons, $80,000 a year for car services and up to $2,000 per year in "properly documented hair and makeup charges for business-related appearances." 6. Houston Chronicle
Mike Levy, the publisher who built a little regional magazine into powerhouse player Texas Monthly, announced his retirement Tuesday. Levy, who turns 62 this month, founded the magazine 35 years ago on a belief that Texans had enough common traditions and interests that they would support a publication dedicated to telling their story. "Nobody will ever confuse me with a brain surgeon," said Levy. "But I did see something that could work." Along the way he created an iconic symbol of Texas with a magazine that celebrated bluebonnets, barbecue and Willie Nelson, who made his seventh cover appearance this month. Along with the clich?s, it has delivered hard-hitting coverage of politics, immigration and crime. MORE ONLINE
