Ekstract’s Extraction
By Keith Kelly

http://www.nypost.com/seven/05232008/business/ekstracts_extraction_112150.htm

Media entrepreneur Richard Ekstract is putting Hamptons Cottages & Gardens and three other regional shelter magazines on the block. His reason: The longtime Hamptons resident wants to travel the world and visit New Zealand.

Media Industry Newsletter this week reported that the magazine industry is slumping badly this year, with monthly ad pages in the second quarter off 6.14 percent, building on a 4.6 percent decline in the first quarter.

As such, it might not be the most opportune time for Ekstract to be selling his company, Cottages & Gardens Publications. "Regionals are holding up better than nationals - we're chasing the wealthy," said Ekstract.

Race-Related Newspaper Magazine to Launch
By Jason Fell

RiseUp, a weekly magazine with race-related content, is set to launch June 22 in major newspapers, carrying a four million circulation.“The mission of RiseUp is to provide an ongoing conversation for all races and ethnicities to better understand each other and to build stronger communities, cities, nations and a better world,” founder and executive editor Janice Ellis tells FOLIO.

RiseUp, which will be driven by national advertising, has secured several newspapers—including the New York Daily News, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and the Houston Chronicle—to distribute the magazine. Ellis says she plans to look for additional partnerships and to increase RiseUp’s circulation to eight million this fall. By the first quarter 2009, circulation could be as high as 12 million, she says.

“Our goal is to spread this important conversation as broadly as we can.” Printed on newspaper stock, Ellis has no plans to make RiseUp a glossy.

Seizing on the growing interest in celebrity spawn, People.com bought Celebrity Baby Blog, a four-year-old Web site devoted to celebrities and their babies, from founder Danielle Friedland.

For the time being, celebrity Baby Blog will remain separate from People.com. In the coming weeks, the blog and People.com will begin cross-promoting each other.

People.com hopes the acquisition will grow its appeal with its largely female audience, while it plans other additions, both home grown and through acquisitions, to build traffic to the site.

Magazine Prints Issue on Wheat Paper
By Jason Fell

Canadian Geographic reportedly has become the first North American magazine to be printed on paper made from wheat.

The magazine—which last fall increased its frequency to 10 times per year—says it is printing its annual environment issue on sheets made using wheat straw.

"It's our message to magazine publishers and pulp-producers alike, that adding agricultural waste to pulp mix can offer farmers a new source of revenue and cut down on the demand of pulp from our boreal forests," the magazine says on its Web site.

Publishers Look to Cash in on Green
By Jason Fell
5/22/08
http://www.foliomag.com/2008/publishers-look-cash-green

According to a recent report from McGraw-Hill Construction, the green home building market is expected to be worth as much as $20 billion this year, and could double over the next five years, possibly reaching as much as $70 billion in market share. With home foreclosure activity continuing to skyrocket, and environmental and political pressures mounting about the effects of global warming, it’s no wonder that the green home building market is exploding even in this down economy.

Magazine publishers are also cashing in on this expanding market. McGraw-Hill’s award-winning, 42,000-circulation GreenSource magazine, for instance, has seen consistent advertising sales growth since its launch in 2006. Its March issue was its largest to-date, McGraw-Hill says, with more than 80 ad pages. Traffic to its Web site, greensourcemag.com, is up nearly 200 percent since last July.

“The response has been overwhelmingly positive from our readers, clearly underscoring the interest in the topics we cover,” says McGraw-Hill Construction editorial director Robert Ivy. McGraw-Hill also has plans to increase GreenSource’s frequency from quarterly to bi-monthly, effective with the July issue.
