Memo Pad: Looking Back
By Stephanie D. Smith

No magazine anniversary would be complete without a look back at the best and worst of times — and couples and fashions, for that matter — covered in its pages. While Esquire preps for its 75th anniversary in October, Hamptons magazine will celebrate 30 years in publication in this week's issue with a retrospective package.

The issue includes iconic covers (Angelina Jolie, June 2000; Madonna, 1985), news stories and big events (publicist Lizzie Grubman ramming her SUV over patrons at Conscience Point) and trends that kept the beach dwellers in and out of fashion — jellies, Shetland sweaters, Tae Bo, the "Rachel" haircut. Hamptons, which Niche Media chief executive officer Jason Binn purchased in 1999 from founder and former partner Randy Schindler, also pays tribute to Hamptonite couples that have kept gossip pages buzzing for three decades — Jane and Jann Wenner, Donna Hanover and Rudy Giuliani, Kelly and Calvin Klein and Beverly Johnson and Chris Noth (seriously?).

The issue hit newsstands Friday.

Music Mag’s Widget Knows What Users Want

idiomag, a London-based digital magazine that provides readers with personalized content based on specified interests, has launched a distributed widget version of its magazine.

The widget aggregates recommendations from friends across all major social networks, and delivers a multimedia channel for every reader. The magazine currently aggregates around 7,000 music articles per month, from magazines, blogs and communities. idiomag's technology then renders the content into a mashup, bringing in additional content and external links that are relevant to each article.

The idea of personalized content was tailor-made for the music world, but to get all the content a reader wants in widget form may be the next big hit for music mags.

Manhattan Media Acquires Latin Business Magazine, Forums Company

Manhattan Media, the company that purchased Atlantic Media's 02138 magazine earlier this month, has acquired Latin Media Management—including Latin Trade magazine and the Bravo Business Awards.

As part of the acquisition, Manhattan Media has formed Miami Media, a subsidiary company to oversee these acquisitions and future business with a focus on Latin America, the Caribbean and southern Florida. Longtime Latin Trade president and publisher Mike Zellner will serve as Miami Media’s editorial director.

According to Manhattan Media chairman Richard Burns, Latin Trade has “a terrific history and high reputation for editorial integrity. We will work with the best of the old company’s staff, talk closely with our readers and advertisers, and invest heavily to support our plans for expansion.”

Mass Mag Exodus Continues as Brands Follow Men Online

Some magazine publishers hoped that this year would see marketers shake off their exuberance for digital media. Perhaps, amid a sober reassessment of the actual results from so much digital experimentation, print could even recapture some of the ad spending lost to the internet.

Fat chance. Instead, a combination of forces led by the broad economic slump is delivering as challenging a year as ever for traditional publishers. You can see it when you look at macro measures such as the number of ad pages sold into print magazines for their issues through June, which came in 5.5% lower than in the first half of 2007, according to the Media Industry Newsletter.

And you can see it when you visit individual fronts in the battle, such as the young men's video site Heavy -- which is now playing a bawdy music video it created to promote the JVC El Kameleon car stereo. JVC has pulled out of titles such as Playboy and Forbes this year to concentrate on digital marketing, outdoor advertising and events such as the Crue Fest 2008 tour.

Publishers, Buyers Brace for Gains in Verified Circ

Two years ago, the Audit Bureau of Circulations cast a spotlight on magazines’ use of public-place copies when it created the new category of verified circ. The rule was intended to meet media buyers’ demands for transparency. And when the data became available, some pounced, railing against the common practice by magazines of using verified to plug shortfalls in their rate base.

Buyer scrutiny is likely to heat up now that ABC has required that public-place-sponsored copies be reclassified as such as of January 2008. By folding the public-place-sponsored category into verified, the board was acknowledging the scant difference between verified, which is free to the host location, and sponsored, for which a sponsor pays as little as a penny per copy.

Verified and sponsored represent a relatively small amount of total circ, but some publishers are heavier users than others. In the second half of last year, sponsored represented 2.7 percent of total circ, or 9.8 million copies, per ABC. Verified represented 3.8 percent of circulation, or 13.6 million copies.
