Memo Pad: WRITING ABOUT FOOD, AND EATING IT (3rd item)
By Irin Carmon

Gourmet and New York magazines led the James Beard Foundation Media Awards Friday night with two wins each. In true magabrand/multiplatform fashion, the magazines' nods included forays into the Web (Josh Ozersky and Daniel Maurer's Grub Street blog at nymag.com) and television (Gourmet's "Diary of a Foodie" on PBS), in addition to traditional long-form journalism (Manny Howard's chronicle of his Brooklyn farming attempts in New York, Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Junot D?az on Dominican food in upper Manhattan for Gourmet). Other magazine winners included GQ (for magazine feature writing about restaurants and/or chefs), The Atlantic (for columns by Corby Kummer) and Epicurious.com (for food-related Web site). The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal took one award each for newspaper feature writing.

Memo Pad: BAILEY AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE
By Nina Jones

Glenda Bailey turned up at Buckingham Palace Wednesday to receive her Officer of the Order of the British Empire honor from Queen Elizabeth II for services to British journalism and British fashion in the U.S. And the British editor in chief of Harper's Bazaar made sure she pledged her allegiance to England in sartorial terms on the day. While Bailey wore a navy blue Chanel suit to her investiture, she accessorized it with a Philip Treacy hat and a quilted Chanel bag printed with red and white stripes, so that it resembled a miniature Union Jack flag. "It all went so smoothly," said Bailey. "My family was in the front row. Her Majesty the Queen of course asked me about Harper's Bazaar." And naturally, being the editor of a fashion magazine, Bailey took note of what the rarely fashionable queen had on: "She was wearing a peppermint green shift dress, three strands of pearls and a brooch. I thanked her for being so elegant, and such an inspiration."

Bailey joins several British fashion figures who have been recognized by the British honors system in recent weeks — Stuart Rose received his knighthood last week and Nicole Farhi was made an honorary Commander of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire last month.

Emeril Lagasse to Write Column for MSLO's Everyday Food

Emeril Lagasse will start penning a column in Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia’s Everyday Food, the first example of MSLO leveraging the celeb chef since buying his business in April.

Fittingly, Lagasse’s column, called Kick it Up—Everyday with Emeril, will make its debut in the July/August issue, which carries a grilling theme. In his first column, Lagasse will share grilling ideas for summer barbecues.

Publisher Amy Wilkins said Lagasse was a perfect fit for the July/August issue and the magazine overall, with its emphasis on easy-to-fix dishes with readily available ingredients. “We already planned to do a grilling issue for July/Aug,” she noted. “He’s all about grilling, and he’s so accessible.”

U.S. News Loses Weekly War as Sector's Ad Pages Plummet
By Nat Ives

U.S. News & World Report, the longtime No. 3 weekly news magazine, is dropping to a biweekly frequency starting next year, effectively ceding its troubled category to larger rivals Time and Newsweek.

All three traditional newsweeklies have already taken steps such as cutting paid-circulation guarantees as competition has increased and the news cycle has gone into hyperdrive. U.S. News has already trimmed its frequency to 36 issues this year from 46 last year. But the move to publish issues only every other week -- with additional specials on occasion -- provides the strongest signal yet that the ground has permanently shifted under the old newsweeklies.

"'News' and 'week' becomes an oxymoron," was how Brian Kelly, editor of U.S. News, described the effect of always-on media last week.

8 simple rules for succeeding on the Web

That was my message last week when I spoke at the annual meeting of City and Regional Magazines here in this charming city on the banks of the Mississippi River. In fact, many media folks beyond magazine editors are blowing it.

I encountered magazine editors and publishers who bemoaned the state of publishing today. Advertising is down. Circulation remains stagnant. Costs are rising. It's impossible to fully embrace the Web.

Huh? Give me that last one again.

Writing With Your Stomach: James Beard Award Winners Announced
By Glynnis MacNicol

The James Beard Awards, also known as the "Oscars of the food world" were announced yesterday. The two big winners, with two awards each, were New York Magazine and Gourmet. As WWD notes, in "true magabrand/multiplatform fashion" the magazines' won for both long-form journalism (Manny Howard's article on Brooklyn farming in New York, Junot Diaz on Dominican food in Manhattan for Gourmet), as well as, online and television contributions (the Grub Street blog at nymag.com and Gourmet's "Diary of a Foodie" on PBS). A full list of winners can be found here. In the meantime, from Diaz's piece:

But if you want to see the real El Malecon, visit after midnight. When everyone is returning from a dance, a party, a drive, a long stretch of work. Past midnight is when you will see the community best. When all the impediments fall away and the X-ray of who we are is almost perfect. And yes, no matter what, order the vaunted rotisserie chicken. Sometimes you'll catch a bad bird and it will be dry — well, my friends, dust off the middle-school Spanish and send it back for another. The juicy ones are worth enduring the rolled eyes of the servers and your inability to conjugate querer properly; the juicy ones, you see, are divine.
