Big $ for Election Book
By Keith J. Kelly

TWO magazine veterans, each on the campaign trail for nearly two decades, have snared a big-bucks deal from HarperCollins to write about the current presidential campaign pitting John McCain against Barack Obama.

John Heilemann at New York magazine and Mark Halperin at Time believe they first met back in 1996 covering the New Hampshire primaries.

Both have written extensively on political campaigns but it wasn't until they were both covering a McCain rally in Annapolis, Md., in early April that they began seriously toying with the idea of writing a book together.

Los Angeles Times Editor Russ Stanton confirmed, in a memo to staffers, that the news department would no longer be producing the paper's Sunday magazine.

But, in the same memo, Stanton denied a report in The New York Times about the change that an editor had been hired for the publication.

"Contrary to reports, it is my understanding that the group has yet to hire a staff for this publication, including an editor," Stanton stated in the memo, which the paper placed on its Web site in the Reader Representative's blog.

Jay Woodruff, who was getting moved aside as the top man of Entertainment Weekly's critically acclaimed Web site, has apparently turned down an offer from EW Managing Editor Rick Tetzeli to stay at the print version of the magazine as an executive editor.

Instead, Media Ink has learned that Woodruff is jumping ship to become the new editor-in- chief of Maxim.com, the Web site that goes with the beer and babes magazine sold by Felix Dennis to Kent Brown ridge and the Quadrangle Group last year.

"It was a successful raid," said Brownridge, CEO of the company that with the sale changed its name from Dennis Publishing to Alpha Media.

McCracken gets cracking on Federated Media’s Technologizer
By Caroline McCarthy

A month after announcing his resignation from PC World magazine, tech journalism veteran Harry McCracken has announced a new venture: Technologizer, an online destination for general technology news and analysis.

The new site will be launched later this summer in conjunction with advertising start-up Federated Media Publishing; founder John Battelle is himself a veteran of the tech press, having co-founded Wired magazine and founded The Industry Standard in the 1990s.

Federated will also work to develop the site, in addition to providing ads, much as it did for Boing Boing Gadgets and Webb Alert. Technologizer will join the company's "Tech Federation" division alongside blog powerhouses such as TechCrunch and GigaOM.

The T-Shirt’s Great, But Do I Have to Read? …Dee-Lightful Glamour

Print publishers are clearly beleaguered as they rush to excite the younger generation about the virtues of newspapers and magazines, but Wenner Media's latest marketing effort may exhibit how difficult times truly are in this Internet age. Classic Rolling Stone magazine covers from the past 40 years including Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Kid Rock and The Beatles are now being sold in T-shirt form and are part of a limited edition collection available at Macy's. The shirts cost $36 each. Oh, by the way, there's a one-year subscription to Rolling Stone included. Deducting the magazine's special offer subscription price of $17.97 for a year, that works out to a mere $18.03 for the shirt. Gary Armstrong, chief marketing officer of Wenner Media, said the magazine had been approached by several retailers to do this type of collection but it chose Macy's since it has stores all over the country and it appeals to the core Rolling Stone reader. "This is just the beginning," he added. Hats, bags and knapsacks are also in the works, although they may be sold through other partnerships.

DEE-LIGHTFUL GLAMOUR: Though Ruby Dee has earned a Screen Actors Guild award and an Academy Award nomination, she never was given a private dinner where New York's fashion set gathered around to fete her — until Monday. Vogue editor at large Andr? Leon Talley, eBay style director Constance White, designer Kevan Hall, IMG's Fern Mallis, Gayle King, Lynn Whitfield, the Washington Post's Robin Givhan and Harriette Cole, Ebony's creative director, were among those who gathered at Melba's in Harlem to honor Dee, who this year was nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar for her role in "American Gangster," and sparkled on the red carpet in a gown designed by Hall. "This is the first time I've ever had such an occasion where people like you have come to honor me," Dee told the group. "It's like the great hand of God is reaching through the sky and patting me on the back and saying, 'Atta girl!'"

Before dessert, eBay's White presented Dee with framed images of herself on the red carpet in Hall's red dress (Dee, who said one thing that bothered her about the Oscars is fretting over what to wear, credited her daughter for both discovering Hall and "that someone makes a dress for you when you get nominated for an Oscar"). She also received a studio shot from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer printed as early as the late Fifties, a playbill from "Raisin in the Sun," both found on eBay, and other classic photos from her films. Dee received a $10,000 pair of earrings from Mikimoto as well.

Magazines Talk Video—But Most Still Unable to Monetize It
By Dylan Stableford

http://www.foliomag.com/2008/magazines-talk-video-most-still-unable-monetize-it

“What do you call someone who watches video on a magazine Web site?” Nina Link, Magazine Publishers of America, asked a small group of magazine staffers—many responsible for beefing up digital video content on their employer’s Web sites—at the Time and Life Building here at the Magazines Publishers of America’s first online video conference Tuesday. “Simple—a viewer.”

You don’t have to look much past YouTube to realize that online video—at least contentwise—is booming. But magazines, said Time Inc. Studios president Paul Speaker, have largely underleveraged their video content, or, at least, the emerging platform. The magazine industry, he said, has the most “underleveraged storytellers on the planet.”

“There is no other platform, no other train coming,” Speaker said, adding that “brand permission,” a term publishers wary of putting resources into video sometimes employ, is “a rearview mirror term—your audience is consuming more and more video every day.”
