1. WWD Memo Pad
Churchward Departs

Vogue's longtime design director Charles Churchward is leaving the magazine after 13 years. He resigned from his post on Monday, but will stay on through July to help close the title's famously large September fashion issue. After that, Churchward will continue to work with Vogue for projects including books and special issues.

"There are many projects that I've been wanting to do that I can't put aside the time for when I'm going to an office every single day," said Churchward. Such projects include a biography of photographer Herb Ritts, for which he's currently conducting interviews.

"I personally am so grateful to Charlie for everything he's done. He's been a great colleague and an asset to all of us," Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour told WWD.

Two Are Better Than One

After months of persistent rumors — and denials — the departure of Susan Lyne as chief executive of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc. after four years in the job came as little surprise to media observers. But her replacements did. President of media Wenda Harris Millard had long been seen as a potential successor; it was the elevation of president of merchandising Robin Marino to co-ceo with Millard that was unexpected. Lyne's contract expired in December and, according to a company spokeswoman, was automatically renewed for one year.

Millard joined the company last July from Yahoo, where she'd been chief sales officer, and Marino was president and chief operating officer of Kate Spade until joining MSLO in 2005. The co-ceo arrangement is unusual, and it is expected to increase the authority of board chairman Charles Koppelman.

"I really expected Wenda to become the ceo," said David Kastenbaum, director of equity research at Morgan Joseph. "It's a sign that they feel that Robin's really important to the company, and Wenda doesn't have the experience yet to run the merchandising business."

IDG Eliminates Circ Positions at Three Titles
By Bill Mickey

http://www.foliomag.com/2008/idg-outsources-circ-three-titles

IDG has outsourced circulation for PC World, Macworld and GamePro to Miami and New York-based circ services firm ProCirc. The relationship is a new one, taking effect this month, and has resulted in the loss of “several” key circ positions associated with the titles, IDG has confirmed.

The decision to outsource the services is a curious move for a company the size of IDG, but one, according to a spokesperson, intended to leverage a deeper experience pool with ProCirc.

While IDG declined to release the names of the employees who were let go last week or confirm the exact number, David Cobb, director of consumer marketing for PCWorld and Macworld, was one, says a source with knowledge of the situation.

Newly sold and heading for yet another sale, TV Guide has sought to reinvent itself for a consumer faced with plenty of options for television listings and entertainment news.

The latest effort comes under ex-Life & Style editor Debra Birnbaum, who was installed as editor last month after Macrovision Corp. completed its $2.8 billion purchase of TV Guide parent Gemstar-TV Guide and ousted her predecessor Ian Birch.

The next issue, on newsstands June 12, speaks to Birnbaum’s efforts to make the magazine more topical, expand the definition of its coverage and act as a filter for its readers.

Radar is set to unveil a high-profile redesign this month.

The magazine, now in its third iteration, spent four months working with Pentagram’s Luke Hayman, one of the industry’s renowned designers, on the new look. Editor Maer Roshan also hired celebrity photographer Terry Richardson to shoot Pamela Anderson for the July/August issue.

Radar also announced plans to increase its rate base to 225,000 in 2009. The magazine increased its rate base from 150,000 to 200,000 this year, and is in the process of completing its first ABC Audit.
