******* Len Downie has yet to formally step down as executive editor of the Washington Post, but the list of possible replacements is a mile long. Now, a source with intimate knowledge of the situation tells Radar that Newsweek editor Jon Meacham is one of the leading candidates to become Downie's successor. It's unclear both when Downie will step aside—although we're told it will be by January 20th—and when an official announcement regarding his replacement will be made. Meacham, who has been with Newsweek since 1995, was named editor in 2006. Of course, his departure from the staid newsweekly would make available the top slot at the mag as well—a position which Radar hears Newsweek International editor Fareed Zakaria is actively pursuing. Zakaria, whom is perhaps most recognizable in his capacity as the guy Jon Stewart taps to appear on the Daily Show when someone more famous cancels, is said to be touting the fact that circulation numbers of Newsweek International editions he oversees are up, in contrast to the declining numbers of the domestic edition. FAKE Steve Jobs is jumping ship. Dan Lyons, the veteran Forbes tech editor who runs a blog under the pseudonym "Fake Steve Jobs," has been poached by Newsweek Editor Jon Meacham. It's the first significant hire since Newsweek went through its massive downsizing that slashed the staff by 111 people, including about 30 on the editorial side. MORE ONLINE

Susan Lyne's resignation yesterday as CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia might not signal the end of her career in magazines. The Post has learned that Lyne and Time Inc. CEO Ann Moore are slated to have lunch next week, a meeting that was arranged yesterday after news broke out that Lyne was stepping down after four years at MSLO. Speculation has swirled for months that Lyne was being scouted to replace Moore, who has said she will not renew her current contract when it expires in the second quarter of 2010. MORE ONLINE

U.S. News & World Report magazine will move to a biweekly schedule next year and redesign its pages as it struggles to hold on to advertising dollars with more people getting news and information from the Web. The magazine, which is owned by the real estate magnate Mortimer Zuckerman, is also lowering the circulation it guarantees advertisers from 2 million to 1.5 million as of July. Time magazine has also undergone a redesign and lowered its circulation base. U.S. News already reduced its frequency from 46 issues in 2007 to 32 this year, and will adopt the biweekly schedule next year, a spokeswoman said. MORE ONLINE
