McMurry to Launch Luxury Title
By Matt Kinsman

As one of the largest custom publishers, McMurry is used to generating magazines for someone else. Now, the company is launching a magazine for itself.

6 (the name refers to six “passion points” of the readership, which include wealth, style, travel, design and body and health) debuts with a November/December issue targeting 100,000 select households with average net worth of $25 million. “McMurry wanted to do a magazine without a sponsor,” says editorial director Catherine Gunderson. “This isn’t just a magazine with a static extension into a Web site. This is about how can we make it fresh and build something that advertisers and readers told us they want.”

With no shortage of luxury magazines in the marketplace, McMurry says it needed to make sure its reader base really represented the affluent, rather than the aspirational readers, it says many of its luxury competitors cater to. The publisher began building its target audience by accumulating lists through a variety of different data sources and ended up with a list of 300,000 names, which it pared down to get down to a target list of 100,000. McMurry then hired MMR to extract names from the list on a random basis and conduct a survey to help validate the list.

News International, Rupert Murdoch's British newspaper business, is set to close its consumer magazine division, called News Magazines, a spokeswoman in the U.K. said Wednesday.

"We can confirm that we will disengage from the magazine business," she said. "It will allow us to focus on our core business as the U.K.'s largest national news publisher."

On Tuesday, London trade magazine Media Week reported that News Magazines had made a loss of 9.7 million pounds, or $18.9 million, in the year to June 2007, but the spokeswoman declined to confirm that figure.

Publishing vet Mike LaFavore is quitting as editorial director of Meredith Corp.’s magazines, a newly created position that he assumed in October 2005.

LaFavore, the founding editor of Men’s Health and former editor of TV Guide, said he told Meredith Publishing Group president Jack Griffin a month ago of his plans to quit and agreed to wait until the end of the quarter that ends June 30.

“I’m not having as much fun as I’d liked,” he said in a phone conversation. “Editorial director of a company is a tough job. … The magazines are in good shape, and I want to get back to doing more editorial work. I just thought it was time.”

Hearst CEO Steps Down

Ever since the chief himself, William Randolph Hearst, ran the media empire, there has always been a very Hearst way of doing things: be conservative, be private, and never acknowledge internal strife. So the announcement on June 18 that Victor Ganzi, only the sixth chief executive officer in Hearst Corp.'s storied history, would be stepping down because of his "irreconcilable differences" with the board of trustees was very un-Hearst-like.

The board, populated by descendants of the founder, grew increasingly frustrated with Ganzi over his strategy to take minority interests in outside companies, particularly technology outfits with large potential upsides, rather than making bigger bets, say company sources.

"There was a sense if we continued that, we would end up looking more and more like a holding company," says an executive familiar with the situation. Ganzi, 61, a lawyer who had been at Hearst for 18 years (BusinessWeek.com, 7/8/02), will be succeeded, at least on an interim basis, by his predecessor, 75-year-old Frank Bennack. Currently vice-chairman of Hearst's board of directors, Bennack retired as CEO in 2002 after serving nearly 24 years in that post.
