******* In a sign that there’s still room for growth in the women’s lifestyle category, Hallmark, the oversized lifestyle magazine from the eponymous greeting card company, will take its rate base up to 800,000 with the February/March 2009 issue. That’s an increase of 14.3 percent over its current rate base of 700,000, but publisher Carol Campbell Boggs said Hallmark is counting on the broad promotional support it gets from its parent company to help the magazine reach its circulation goal. Hallmark Cards is touting the title on its Hallmark Hall of Fame prime-time program, in its Gold Crown stores and through direct mail to people in its database as well as outside lists. Launched nearly two years ago with a rate base of 400,000, the magazine once expected to be bigger by now; plans once called for increasing the rate base to 750,000 and frequency to 10 times this year. The publication opted to adopt a more modest rate base increase and stay a bimonthly, though. MORE ONLINE
2. MediaWeek
Six weeks after the housecleaning at Hachette Filipacchi Media’s interactive division that lead to the departure of 15 people--including online editorial director Matthew Rothenberg and Elle.com fashion director Joe Berean--the company’s new digital chief is revealing the company’s new Web strategy. Todd Anderman, the former Maxim Digital president who was hired in January as senior vp, digital media, said the company would relaunch all its sites by the end of the year, starting with its biggest one, that of Woman’s Day. Anderman said the sites would emphasize new applications to encourage user involvement like recipe finder and car-buying tools, plus links to other sites. A source familiar with the strategy said the emphasis seemed to be on creating community features and aggregating content from elsewhere rather than original journalism. "They're trying to figure out what the sites will look like, but they're not expecting a ton of original content," this person said. MORE ONLINE
3. FishbowlNY
Hachette Filipacchi, which six weeks ago "cleaned house" in its media department, and last week shuffled its CEO Jack Kliger up to chairman, has announced it's planning on relaunching all its sites by the end of the year, beginning with WomansDay.com. There seems to be some debate over the focus of the relaunched sites, which include Elle.com, ElleGirl.com and CarandDriver.com: one source says that they will be focused less on original content than social networking features while Todd Anderman (formerly the Maxim Digital president who was hired in January) says that the focus will primarily be on original content. The aim, he says, is to expand the roll of the print editors so that "people who create content to create content across multiple platforms."
4. Advertising Age
It's been six months since Scott Donaton, Ad Age's editor-turned-publisher, jumped ship to become the fifth publisher in five years at Time Inc.'s Entertainment Weekly. It was a talked-about move that brought a lot of questions about what changes he would bring to the consumer title, so we decided to check in with our former boss and see what he's been up to. Circulation is steady, and EW's rate base recently reached 1.8 million, but its challenges are clear: Ad pages are down 12% through May. Advertising Age: Selling ads has become a long and grinding road for Entertainment Weekly, where ad pages have fallen the past three years and so far this year, too. Have advertisers lost sight of the magazine? MORE ONLINE
5. New York Post
If you're going to sweat this summer, you may as well have fun. This week's sports mags tell you how. You don't have to be an eight-minute miler to read Runner's World. The latest issue features an inspiring story on runner Alicia Shay, whose husband Ryan collapsed and died during last year's Olympic trials in Central Park. You will be rooting for Shay to honor her husband's memory en route to the Summer Olympics in Beijing. Bicycling shows how to beat stress and save big bucks by biking to work. The issue also offers loads of gear, from the correct shoes to the latest affordable bikes. The sport is much more involved (and expensive) than the nostalgic biking of youth, but as the cover story says, it can keep you healthy and balanced. MORE ONLINE

INTERNSHIPS ... that Harper’s Bazaar is seeking highly motivated interns for its fashion department to begin immediately and potentially continue on into fall. Interns will be working with the entire fashion team, but more specifically with the French market. We require 5 days a week for summer. Among learning the inner workings of a fashion magazine, tasks will include running errands, picking up clothing at showrooms, creating look boards, managing samples, making copies, and helping create art memos for outgoing fashion stories and their corresponding photo shoots. This internship is an amazing opportunity and, although intense, is quite fun. As a fashion intern, you will have an extensive amount of exposure to both our staff and fashion PR. Please email resume and a brief cover letter clearly stating availability to Jessica Karcher at hbzintern@gmail.com. (OK to mention Ed) For even more internships, go to http://www.ed2010.com/ed-campus/internships/list or click here.
