Is Conde Nast in Talks to Buy Rolling Stone?
By Dylan Stableford

http://www.foliomag.com/2008/cond-nast-talks-buy-rolling-stone

Near the end of an otherwise unremarkable interview with Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter and Rolling Stone editor Jann Wenner (both of whom have developed what I'll refer to henceforth as "caricature coifs") about an upcoming Hunter S. Thompson documentary, PBS' Charlie Rose slipped in this little question, rather nonchalantly I might add: “So what's this story that Cond? Nast wants to buy Rolling Stone?”

Time Inc.'s Maghound Set to Debut in September

After almost four years of continuous development and testing, Maghound.com, Time Inc.’s Netflix-like service for magazines, is finally set to launch this September, Dave Ventresca, president of Maghound Enterprises, Inc., told attendees of the 2008 Circulation Management Conference in Chicago Tuesday.

Ventresca gave a detailed presentation called “A Look Inside the Maghound.com Model,” which included a step-by-step account of how the idea was born and developed as well as a demo of how the site will operate once launched. According to Ventresca, 280 titles are currently on board with the service. He hopes to have 300 titles participating by the launch and 400 by the end of the year.

Maghound.com allows consumers to choose titles from a variety of publishers for a mix-and-match “subscriptions” where they pay one monthly fee and have the ability to switch titles at any time. Unlike traditional subscriptions, members aren’t locked in their memberships and can cancel whenever they wish. Ventresca says that Maghound.com offers “flexibility, choice, control and personalization.”

Women’s Health has joined a waning group of titles requiring users to pay for content online, launching a subscription-based fitness and nutrition site called Fit Coach.

Users pay $3.50 per week to be members, following a free trial month, and sign up on a monthly basis following an initial three month subscription. The site does not contain ads yet, though the company is exploring sponsorship opportunities.

The program tracks and charts members’ progress with fitness and nutrition goals, which are based on customizable workouts and meal plans.

Small Horse Magazine Scores Big (Brown) Scoop
By Dylan Stableford

When Big Brown, the prohibitive favorite to win the Belmont Stakes and, in turn, the Triple Crown, finished dead last a couple of weeks ago, it left many people wondering why. Or, how.

Well, it appears that a magazine called Blood-Horse—virtually unknown outside of horseracing circles—uncovered a clue that Sports Illustrated and ESPN and dozens of newspapers couldn’t: that is, Big Brown’s loose boot. The magazine published a photograph in its June 21 issue which shows what appears to be a loose shoe (honestly, who here knew horses wore shoes?) on its right hind hoof.

“This is clearly the first hard evidence we’ve had of anything,” Michael Iavarone, one of the horse’s owners, told USA Today. The photo, taken by a freelancer, has since been picked up all over the world, with most media outlets giving the 22,000-circulation weekly the credit. (Check the Google News results for “blood horse magazine.”)

A Not-So-Chatty-Hearst
By Keith Kelly
June 27, 2008

IT'S been more than seven days since Victor Ganzi was ousted as CEO of Hearst Corp., and most people inside and outside the media company see no movement toward naming a successor to Frank Bennack, the former CEO who's returned to the top spot while the company searches for a new chief executive.

Bennack - a taciturn, publicity-shunning CEO in the best of times - has been absolutely mum on this one.

He issued one corporation-wide letter to the company's 20,000 employees on June 19, the day of Ganzi's departure. But he has not addressed the troops since.
