******* Here is the most chilling way I can find of stating the matter. Until recently, “waterboarding” was something that Americans did to other Americans. It was inflicted, and endured, by those members of the Special Forces who underwent the advanced form of training known as sere (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape). In these harsh exercises, brave men and women were introduced to the sorts of barbarism that they might expect to meet at the hands of a lawless foe who disregarded the Geneva Conventions. But it was something that Americans were being trained to resist, not to inflict. Exploring this narrow but deep distinction, on a gorgeous day last May I found myself deep in the hill country of western North Carolina, preparing to be surprised by a team of extremely hardened veterans who had confronted their country’s enemies in highly arduous terrain all over the world. They knew about everything from unarmed combat to enhanced interrogation and, in exchange for anonymity, were going to show me as nearly as possible what real waterboarding might be like. It goes without saying that I knew I could stop the process at any time, and that when it was all over I would be released into happy daylight rather than returned to a darkened cell. But it’s been well said that cowards die many times before their deaths, and it was difficult for me to completely forget the clause in the contract of indemnification that I had signed. This document (written by one who knew) stated revealingly: MORE ONLINE

Clay Felker, founder of New York, passed away this morning. At New York, which he started in 1968, the native Missourian championed the careers of many great journalists including his friend Tom Wolfe. Before founding New York, he worked at Life, Time, Esquire and the New York Herald Tribune. Although Felker's post-New York career was marked by missteps at the Daily News, U.S. News & World Report, and Manhattan Inc., his legacy remains strong. We'll let Kurt Andersen do the honors: Clay Felker's own rock stardom as a media pioneer, however, endures. It doesn't matter that he did his great, seminal work way back when. So did Bob Dylan and Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney. During the seventies and eighties, the Times (and much of the rest of mainstream media) thoroughly Felkerized itself. Practically every species of insidery, smart-ass Web journalism carries bits of his DNA. He permanently transformed his white-hot corner of the world. And on these very pages, fresh chapters of his novel about the city are still being published every week MORE ONLINE

Sunday's New York Times contains a long, glowing piece about former Us Weekly and Star editor Bonnie Fuller. David Carr's story falls all over itself with praise for the tabloid queen: he business results have been astonishing. During Ms. Fuller's 16-month tenure at Us Weekly, newsstand sales more than doubled, to 600,000 copies. And Star's overall circulation grew to 1.25 million from 1 million after the conversion to a glossy magazine. This would be great, except it's not exactly true. According to pink pages, Us Weekly's newsstand sales topped out around 505,000 during Fuller's tenure. Since her departure, the median age of the magazine's readers has dropped significantly while their median income has increased more than $10,000. Carr does write, "it should be pointed out that most of Us Weekly's growth occurred under the leadership of her successor, Janice Min, albeit on tracks already laid down by Ms. Fuller," but fails to offer any other explanation. Hearst Magazines is shutting down Quick & Simple magazine with the July 29 issue, its staffers learned today, taking the budget newsstand weekly out of print after nearly three years. Rapidly rising paper prices contributed to the decision; the brand will continue online at QuickandSimple.com, which was recently revamped. A Hearst spokeswoman confirmed the move, which comes at a time of anticipated belt-tightening for Hearst Corp. CEO Victor Ganzi stepped down last month in a surprise decision that the company blamed on disagreements with the Hearst family trust. Interim CEO Frank Bennack is expected to take a hard look at the company's costs during a difficult year for most media companies. Quick & Simple reported average paid and verified circulation of 325,047 over the second half of last year, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations. Ad pages increased nearly 56% in the first half of this year, to 151.3 with the help of an additional issue and a small base from which to grow, according to Media Industry Newsletter. MORE ONLINE

Martha Stewart may have been denied a visa to the U.K. because of her criminal record, but she's very much welcome in the Philippines. The first overseas edition of Martha Stewart Weddings will hit newsstands in the Philippines starting in September in a venture with Summit Media. Last year, the Manila-based media conglomerate introduced Town & Country Philippines, the first foreign edition in the history of the 160-year-old magazine. Summit Media has more than 23 titles in its stable, including the Philippine editions of Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Seventeen, FHM and Good Housekeeping. Weddings are big in the Philippines, in size and in production. A local edition makes perfect sense, said Tara Santos, associate publisher of Martha Stewart Weddings Philippines, since "Martha Stewart Weddings has set the standard of weddings in the world, and we are proud to bring this to the Filipino bride." In addition to Martha Stewart Weddings, there are two other local bridal magazines — Metro Weddings and Dream Weddings. Ingrid Chua-Go, former managing editor of Metro Weddings, explained that the wedding magazine industry is flourishing because there is a shift in who pays for the event. Traditionally, it was the parents of the groom, but couples getting married nowadays tend to foot the bill. "The local wedding magazine caters to the modern bride who would like to be as involved as possible in her wedding because she and her future husband are paying for it. She wants to know the current trends, and looks to the magazines for new ideas, and finds ways to cut cost without sacrificing quality," said Chua-Go. MORE ONLINE
