Memo Pad: WHO'S MANNING THE CLOSET?
By Stephanie D. Smith and Amy Wicks

The turmoil at elle.com continues, with three more people departing the Web site: senior editor Tracey Lomrantz and Rachael Nichol, associate beauty and fashion editor are leaving, and senior designer Alexandra Gershman will leave at the end of the summer. The latest exits follow the departures of editor in chief Kevin Pollock and fashion director Joe Berean early last month. The digital business of elle.com parent Hachette Filipacchi Media is undergoing a complete overhaul under Web boss Todd Anderman, who joined the company in January from Maxim. His strategy for overhauling Hachette's sites is said to be ruffling the feathers of longtime staffers. Sources inside Hachette say plans for elle.com include less original content and video, more content aggregation and user-generated fare, and plowing more resources into sales and marketing efforts for digital.

But there appears to be an "in" door as well as an "out" one at elle.com: A Hachette spokeswoman confirmed that Anna Pezik, current executive editor of Brides.com, will become elle.com's executive editor on July 16, and two other dot-com staffers will be promoted to Pezik's team.

Meanwhile, one former Elle magazine staffer has Web plans of her own. Lilah Schechner, the title's former West Coast editor, has left to become editor of HauteLook Magazine. HauteLook is an online-only title and will feature contributors including fashion buyer John Eshaya and vintage store owner Christos Garkinos. The e-magazine will include designer interviews, streaming video and commentary from celebrity wardrobe stylists such as Cristina Ehrlich and Estee Stanley.

Memo Pad: GOSSIP GIRL

For nearly a year, Bauer Publishing's In Touch and Life & Style both shared one editor in chief, Richard Spencer, and editors Dan Wakeford and Michelle Lee. But as of today, Life & Style is getting its own editor in chief. Donna Armstrong, most recently editor of New Woman in Australia, will take over Life & Style. Armstrong was also an editor and writer for several U.K. magazines, including young women's titles More, Bliss and J17. Spencer, meanwhile, will continue as editor in chief of In Touch and will stay on as editorial director of Life & Style. Wakeford and Lee will return to working on In Touch exclusively. Both magazines have seen some newsstand softness, as have others in the celebrity category, after raising cover prices last fall. This year, single-copy sales for In Touch have averaged around 550,000 through April (versus an average of 744,294 for the first half of last year), while In Touch has averaged around 950,000 through April (compared with an average of 1.2 million in the first half of last year), according to figures from Audit Bureau of Circulations.

MIXED MEDIA: Editor’s Exist Dooms ‘Golf for Women’.
By Jeff Bercovici 7/8/08

This is everything you need to know about the print publishing environment circa mid-2008: It's easier to shut down a magazine with dozens of employees than to hire one new one. Cond? Nast Publications (the parent of Portfolio) said this afternoon that it's ceasing publication of Golf for Women, a 20-year-old, bimonthly title, which it has owned since 2001. "[W]e feel the magazine will not support our long term business objectives," said CEO Chuck Townsend by way of explanation.

But Cond?'s decision came only after Golf for Women's editor in chief, Susan Reed, notified her bosses that she was leaving to become editor in chief of O, The Oprah Magazine, a Hearst title. "Upon learning of Reed's departure, Cond? executives considered replacing her, but instead decided to fold the magazine entirely," reports WWD.

It's going to be that kind of summer, I suspect. Only last week, Hearst made its own ritual offering to the angry ad page gods, sacrificing Quick & Simple.

Memo Pad: RUNNING FOR COVER
By S.D.S. and Amy Wicks

Vogue is already getting publicity on its September cover thanks to photographer Mario Testino, who shot Keira Knightley for the issue. Testino kept a three-week diary of his life as a jet-setting fashion photographer for The Independent, reporting from behind the scenes at the Vogue shoot and, in the process, spilling the beans about the cover subject. "The idea is that Keira comes to be inspired by the Berlin arts scene," he wrote.

"Instead of galleries, I did it around artists' studios: people such as Daniel Richter, Thomas Sch?tte, Andreas Hofer, Thomas Zipp, Thomas Helbig. They all made themselves available and the contrast between Keira and them was quite interesting. She'd never heard of any of them! It's funny how little the art world crosses over with the film world."

But while such press on the September cover may build reader anticipation for the issue, Vogue's spring issues may have disproven the adage that any publicity is good publicity. Vogue's April shape issue cover showed a hulking LeBron James holding a wispy Gisele B?ndchen by the waist and stirred up controversy in the blogosphere and other media outlets over whether or not the photo played off of racially degrading King Kong-like images of African-American men. Meanwhile, Vogue's May cover was bruised in the blogosphere for what seemed to be an overzealous use of Photoshop to make Gwyneth Paltrow's body look robotic.

Magazine advertisers often bend and blur editorial lines, whether it's a supplement, special section or "advertorial." But where, exactly, are the lines on the Internet, assuming there are lines at all? The ground rules are often nonexistent, especially on blogs.

And advertisers are scrambling to come up with innovative ways to attract attention, which has led former Life & Style editor in chief Mark Pasetsky, now the editorial director and publisher of Tecktonik Media, to take on a new approach to blog advertising he's calling "Direct Blog Ads." On his three blogs about young Hollywood, the media industry and today's hottest gay and lesbian stars, Pasetsky will offer an option to advertisers that combines traditional blog posts with ads.

To blur the lines even further, these paid postings will follow each site's existing blog format, although he said each post will be clearly marked as an ad, so visitors will apparently know the difference. "We'll even provide commentary for it," he added.
