In Deepening Ad Decline, Sales Fall 8% at Magazines
By Richard Perez-Pena

As the economy stumbled in the second quarter, magazine ad sales fell more than 8 percent, with the steepest drops in ads for vehicles and for computers and related equipment, according to a report released Thursday.

The report, compiled by the Publishers Information Bureau, shows the industry’s troubles growing worse. Ad pages sold in magazines in the United States declined slightly last year, 0.8 percent, then fell 6.4 percent in the first quarter of this year compared with the period a year earlier, and 8.2 percent in the second quarter.

For the first six months of the year, automotive ad pages in magazines were down 21.3 percent and technology ad pages fell 17.5 percent.

New York Magazine Buys Restaurants Menu Site Menupages
By Rafat Ali

http://www.paidcontent.org/entry/419-new-york-magazine-buys-restaurants-menu-site-menupages/

Menupages, the New York City based online restaurant menu guides site, is being bought out by New York Magazine, we have learned. This is the first such online buy for NYM, which is owned by Wasserstein & Co., the PE firm founded by Bruce Wasserstein…

Menupages, which was founded in 2002, now offers restaurant and take-out menus for eight major U.S. cities: New York to Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, the Miami region, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.

This buy continues the transformation of NYMag.com, which until its relaunch earlier this year, was a somewhat-sleepy site offering random NYC information and news, besides the magazine’s content. It has since morphed itself into a thriving hub of online info, news and gossip, along with video, blogs, pictures and a lot more. NYM refused comment on the story.

Japan Man

Hedi Slimane is in Tokyo shooting Vogue Hommes Japan's debut cover but his involvement with the new magazine doesn't end there. He is also serving as the magazine's male muse as it gears up for its Sept. 10 launch.

"In the men's fashion world there was a big change from 2000 when Hedi Slimane started at Dior Homme. There was fashion before Hedi Slimane and there was fashion after Hedi Slimane," said Kazuhiro Saito, editor in chief of Vogue Nippon and the new men's spin-off. "There were those very skinny, boyish male models. That works for Japanese guys."

o wit, Slimane probably won't have to look far to generate his 20-page spread: a fashion shoot and a story probing the question, "Who is the Model Man?" On Monday night, Slimane will trade in his lens for turntables at Tokyo club Super Deluxe, where he is throwing a party with Dazed & Confused, another title he's helped shape.

he first half of 2008 had 291 magazine launches, down 75 from the same period a year ago, according to Samir Husni, chair of the journalism department at the University of Mississippi, who's also known as Mr. Magazine.

But perhaps the most notable figure, Husni noted, was the sharp decline in regularly published magazines with a frequency of four or more per year. Last year, the first six months produced 132 new launches and this year, only 78 were counted.

It's the biggest drop since I started tracking this information, back in 1978," Husni pointed out. The biggest launch so far this year has been Open Air Magazine, a quarterly that runs in USA Today, said Husni.

NOW we have an inkling as to why 62-year-old Jann Wenner might want to take the money and run when it comes to Us Weekly.

In a just-released industry report, it appears that the magazine, which has grown by leaps and bounds for most of the past eight years, may finally be reaching its peak.

Based on the first five months of this year, Us Weekly is having a little trouble meeting its commitment to advertisers to sell 1.9 million copies a week via subscriptions or newsstand sales.
