******* *******
******* Earlier today, the New Yorker released its cover for the July 21, 2008 issue — and the reaction was swift and furious. The cover by Barry Blitt, called "The Politics of Fear," shows Michelle and Barack Obama depicted as the worst of the prejudiced, smearing characterizations that have dogged them over the course of the campaign: Michelle Obama as a revolutionary in military fatigues, packing AK-47 and ammo; her husband dressed like the Muslim he is stubbornly accused of being. Both of them stand in the Oval Office, with a portrait of Osama bin Laden behind them over a fireplace, in which an American flag burns. Not very subtle. Some are not alarmed — Clarence Page, longtime Chicago Tribune columnist (and African-American) said the cover was "quite within the normal bounds of journalism" — but not everyone sees it that way. It's been described as "offensive" and "trash" and "disgusting" and "just as bad as Fox News." MORE ONLINE
2. Folio:
The New Yorker is facing a firestorm of criticism over a caricature of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama and his wife. The cover of its July 21 "Politics of Fear" issue—hitting newsstands Monday—depicts the Illinois senator in radical Islamic clothing giving a so-called "fist-bump" to Michelle Obama, who is shown with a machine gun strapped across her shoulder. In the background, an American flag burns in a fireplace underneath a framed picture of Osama bin Laden. The cover was illustrated by Barry Blitt, who "satirizes the use of scare tactics and misinformation in the Presidential election to derail Barack Obama's campaign," according to a New Yorker press release. "Satire is part of what we do," New Yorker editor David Remnick said in a statement. "And it is meant to bring things out into the open, to hold up a mirror to the absurd. And that's the spirit of this cover." MORE ONLINE

Hairstyles to crave and hints on how to get over heartbreak. This month’s must-have lip gloss and a new nine-iron that will make your golfing buddies jealous. An explosion of Western magazines has hit newsstands in India in the past 12 months, pitching a familiar mix of consumption and gossip, relationship advice and expensive goodies. Indian versions of Vogue, Rolling Stone, OK!, Hello, Maxim, FHM, Golf Digest, People and Marie Claire have all sprung up this year, and GQ and Fortune are soon to follow. They join familiar names like Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping and Reader’s Digest. MORE ONLINE

From increasing demand for editorial credits and ads disguised as editorial content to even calls for a presence on the cover, advertisers are ratcheting up their pressure on magazines for treatments that blur church-state lines, according to editors, publishers and media buyers. Industry insiders say that while advertisers have pushed the church-state envelope from time to time, their requests have become more brazen. The growth of product placement in TV shows, increasing pressure to demonstrate ROI, the growing importance of magazine ad revenue relative to circulation revenue and, most recently, the economic downturn all have emboldened advertisers to become more aggressive, observers say—and editors and publishers are finding it harder to tell clients no. One of the most obvious indicators of the growing closeness between edit and sales is the growing role of editorial credits. Hall’s Reports, one of the top services keeping tabs of edit credits, counts several hundred thousand credits in the 26 fashion/beauty books it measures. MORE ONLINE

This is the problem with being an editor or publisher or writer or cartoonist or even blogger and having some small lingering trace of a sense of irony—sometimes you accidentally assume that the Vast and Mysterious "Audience" shares that subversive French sense. Thankfully, after what will presumably be a full week of Outrage and Demands for Apologies, David Remnick and his New Yorker will never make that mistake again. As you might've seen, the cover of that influential publication this week shows Barack Obama dressed as a Muslim, and he is Terrorist Fist-Bumping his aggrieved wife as a flag burns in the Oval Office. This obvious and heavy-handed satire has enraged Democrats and liberal media critics because now they are pretty sure this nation of child-like imbeciles will believe it to be an un-retouched photograph from the FUTURE. New Yorker editor David Remnick defended the cover to the Huffington Post. Did you know that sometimes that magazine makes "jokes"? He claims, like the anti-change Rethuglican that he is, that the cover is not even a satire of The Obamas, but rather a comment on "the prejudice and dark imaginings about Barack Obama's—both Obamas'—past, and their politics." That sounds like the sort of "nuance" that a responsible editor would know never to attempt! Why can't you be more like Rolling Stone, David, and only feature angelic photos of Barry as Jesus Christ? This is saying a particular thing at a particular time, when these imaginings and dark fantasies and misconceptions about Obama exist. And we're putting it all together in one image and holding a mirror up to it and showing it for it for the absurdity that it is. MORE ONLINE
6. New York Post
What a week to be in the celebrity biz. We've got it all: burgeoning bellies, obvious addictions, juicy divorces and, oh yeah, the mystical bond between a certain singer and All-Star slugger. Star is on the rehab beat. First, it picks on pint-sized twin Mary-Kate Olsen after she topples over outside an LA club, then it takes bad boy Brody Jenner to task for drinking. The mag also reports that Christie Brinkley is talking about husband No. 5 after an epic divorce battle from cad No. 4, Peter Cook. That's strange considering Brinkley told The Post last week that getting married again would not be "a very intelligent thing to do." If you're sick of celebrity baby bumps and births, skip this issue of People. We figured that Nicole Kidman would never stoop to selling baby pics to OK!, but she and country crooner hubby Keith Urban did tell People they are "delighted" to have a wee one. There's also a story on Matthew McConaughey's boy and yet another on the "pregnant man." MORE ONLINE
