Judging the Books by Their Covers

eptember issues can make or break the year for plenty of magazines, especially those in the fashion buy. Aside from the forests full of pages for fall fashion and advertising, celeb wranglers are fighting for the most high-wattage, newsstand-friendly faces they can find for their covers. So who banked whom for the big September 2008 issues?

As previously reported in WWD, Vogue will have Keira Knightley, shot by Mario Testino. It's something of a gamble, since Vogue also shot the actress for its June cover last year, but the star was a surprisingly weak newsstand draw. The issue was the second-lowest seller of the half, moving 405,000 newsstand copies.

Glamour will have Pen?lope Cruz for its September cover, shot by Mattias Vriens, while W (which beat Glamour to the punch with Cruz on its August cover) plans to feature Kate Hudson, shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

Blurring the Lines

Are Domino editors promoting Pottery Barn as a way to drum up advertising for the shelter title? Not quite.

Editor in chief Deborah Needleman and domino.com contributor Zem Joaquin, who is a founder of green style Web site Ecofabulous.com, give tours of their homes in potterybarn.com's Web series "Where I Live." In the videos, Joaquin describes how she outfitted her eco-friendly home, and Needleman explains how she decorated her TriBeCa pad to reflect a grown up sophistication while providing enough comfort for children at play.

"It mattered to me that the apartment still looked elegant even though it's mostly chaos with children roller-skating and drawing and Magic Markers getting all over everything," she said. Needleman also pointed out two rugs from Pottery Barn that help define sitting areas in her living room.

Cygnus Sues Former Employees Over Competing Magazine
By Jason Fell

Cygnus Business Media has filed a lawsuit against Impact Business Media, the company founded by a former employee who left Cygnus this spring with three fellow staffers to launch a competing magazine.

Greg Napert, who launched Director of Maintenance, which competes for advertising dollars with Cygnus’s Aircraft Maintenance Technology, had served as AMT’s group publisher.

According to the complaint filed in Wisconsin Circuit Court and obtained by FOLIO:, Cygnus alleges that Napert—along with former AMT publisher Danny Faupel, editor-in-chief Joe Escobar and national accounts manager Bob Graf—broke confidentiality and non-solicitation agreements and disclosed Cygnus “trade secrets” by taking list information from the AMT Society, which is associated with Cygnus’ AMT magazine.

French Disconnection

THE year of the French is over for "Bid 'Em Up" Bruce Wasserstein. John French, head of Wasserstein's sprawling trade magazine empire Penton Media, is stepping down. French broke the news to surprised employees yesterday in a "Hello, everyone" e-mail released internally.

French said the decision to leave was a "difficult one," but he added that he would stay on the Penton board and help in the search for his successor.

"This decision has been a difficult one and Penton's board of directors and I have had numerous discussions regarding the organization's evolution and the leadership needs going forward," he wrote. "We believe that my leaving is truly the next step in a significant transformation, which is already well under way across the organization."

A month after it announced a shift biweekly frequency in 2009—effectively ending its status as a “newsweekly”—U.S. News & World Report this week unveiled an extensive redesign of its magazine.

The redesign includes a new logo, typeface, retooled front-of-book and feature well showcasing longer pieces.

“That new logo you see on the cover is not just a cosmetic makeover,” editor Brian Kelly wrote in a note to readers. “It signals a new era for U.S. News. We're changing the way we think of the magazine.”
