Memo Pad: STARRY, STARRY NIGHT
By Melissa Drier 7/22/08
http://www.wwd.com/memopad/article/126608?page=0

German Elle celebrated its 20th birthday in Berlin Saturday night with a bash
for 1,000 of the German fashion scene's finest, plus many well-wishers,
including painter Neo Rauch, collector and advertising mogul Christian Boros,
actress Kim Cattrall and designers Albert Kriemler, Derek Lam and Phillip Lim.

It was also the debut of the Elle Fashion Star Award, also called the Mercedes
in honor of Berlin Fashion Week's sponsor, Mercedes-Benz. While the winners of
the Best Collection, Platinum and Newcomer awards took no one by surprise   Raf
Simons, Karl Lagerfeld and 6267/Gianfranco Ferr?'s Roberto Rimondi and Tommaso
Aquilano, respectively   Simon's teary and heartfelt speech was certainly out
of character, though no more so than Lagerfeld's almost wordless acceptance of
his award, which was presented by Claudia Schiffer.

Twenty international designers sent over two looks from their current cruise
collections to entertain the crowd. And Akris, Armani, Hugo Boss, Burberry,
Roberto Cavalli, Chanel, Chlo?, Dior, Escada, Alberta Ferretti, Gucci, Calvin
Klein, Ralph Lauren, Missoni, Strenesse, Versace, Louis Vuitton, Wunderkind and
YSL also donated one specially designed outfit for an eBay auction to raise
funds for SING, the charity founded by Annie Lennox to provide medical care for
children with AIDS in South Africa.

All Good Things, Etc.: Jezebel Moe to Radar
By Glynnis MacNicol

Radar announced late last night that Jezebel stalwart Moe Tkacik is decamping
to the website as of August 18. Tkacik's departure will be a big loss for the
Gawker Media run Jezebel; she's roundly considered one of the stars of the site
where she covers the politics beat and pens the daily feature Crappy Hour,
among other things.

No word yet on what motivated the departure, though recently Tkacik has been on
the receiving end of a lot of not-so-nice attention in the aftermath of an
appearance on Lizz Winstead's "Shoot the Messenger" show (backstory here). That
said, Tkacik, a former WSJer, was one of Jezebel's original hires when it
launched in May 2007, and fourteen months is a lifetime in the career of the
blogger.

Meanwhile, Radar continues to be the place where everything good Gawker seems
to end up. Former Gawker writer Alex Balk took over as executive online editor
last fall, Choire Sicha has been guest-writing for the Fresh Intelligence blog
for the last month or so, and former Wonkette, and current Swampland scribe Ana
Marie Cox signed on as a contributing editor earlier this year.

Televisa Publishing + Digital, a division of Spanish-language media giant Grupo
Televisa, is combining two of its magazines aimed at Hispanic business leaders.
The titles are the Latin America-focused Poder Magazine and Hispanic
Enterprise, which is solely distributed in the U.S.

The resulting magazine will be called Poder (Power) Enterprise and will have a
combined, mostly free distribution of 125,000 in the U.S. when it relaunches in
September. Like Poder Magazine, it will be distributed 11 times a year.

Poder Enterprise will continue Poder Magazine s partnership with The Economist,
which distributes Poder at its events.
