Growing Boy

One day down, the next day up. While Men?s Vogue earlier this week reported a 4 percent decline in ad pages through September compared with the first nine months of 2007, the Cond? Nast title seems more confident in its circulation growth for next year. The three-year-old magazine will increase its rate base by 50,000 copies as of its February 2009 issue, to 400,000. Subscriptions have grown to about 287,000, while newsstand sales for the title have averaged 53,000 copies for the five issues published in the first half of 2008, according to figures from Audit Bureau of Circulations? Rapid Report.

Even with the rate base increase, Men?s Vogue will be less than half the size of corporate sibling GQ (with a rate base of 875,000) and smaller than Details, which has a rate base of 425,000. Details carries about 340,000 subscriptions and sold on average 72,000 copies a month during 2008?s first half.

Men?s Vogue also has made several changes to its masthead. First, deputy editor Ned Martel has been named editor at large. In his new role, Martel will write longer pieces and a television column for the magazine, and is currently on the road with the Barack Obama campaign for a story. Replacing Martel will be Mark Rozzo, who was promoted from articles editor, and Taylor Antrim will succeed Rozzo as articles editor. Antrim will join the magazine Aug. 1 from Forbes Life, where he was senior editor since 2005 and oversaw design, architecture and real estate stories.

Barack Obama Sells Out

The controversial July 21 cover of The New Yorker portraying Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama as a Muslim has been a virtual sellout on newsstands.

In fact, the demand has completely overwhelmed Cond? Nast's ability to fill requests for additional copies

The issue went off sale on Monday and preliminary estimates show single-copy sales surged 80 percent over average weekly newsstand sales, or around 75,000 copies, compared with average newsstand sales of around 43,000.

Dan Scully is resigning from his post as president of Boston magazine. He made the announcement to staffers Wednesday morning.

Replacing Scully as president is former Chicago magazine publisher Randy Hano, according to a report on Boston's Web site. Hano's appointment is effective August 4.

Scully started at Boston in 1984 as a newsstand sales manager. Since then he's held a number of titles, including general manager, publisher and executive vice president. He will remain with the magazine as a senior publishing consultant.

Wild Working on a Google-Baiting Widget

For FOLIO:?s upcoming annual ?Big Idea? issue, I spoke with Wired.com editor-in-chief Evan Hansen about what the site?s strategic priorities are heading into 2009. You?ll have to wait for the August issue for the full profile, but here?s some stuff Wired is working on right now:

Photo Gallery. At the top of Hansen?s wish list for the next 12 months is a state of the art photo gallery?and one with enough automation as to not annoy editors. ?We?re hoping to have something to show that will blow people?s minds,? he says.

Widgets to End All Widgets. Wired.com is also looking at launching a series of widgets Hansen says could change the game for the way the site approaches content. First up is a Web reputation ranking tool?similar to one that Google recently launched (and Chris Anderson, oddly, helped develop)?which takes the user data from some of the big social networks like Facebook and MySpace using open API, crunches it, and spits out a list-style ranking broadcast across Wired?s widget network.
