Memo Pad: Wasting No Time Making Friends
By Stephanie D. Smith

http://www.wwd.com/media-news/fashion-memopad/wasting-no-time-making-friends-1659724

Though Nina Garcia serves as editor at large at Elle through season five of ?Project Runway,? it seems she?s already getting a head start on her fashion director duties at Marie Claire. Her new gig officially begins Sept. 2, but sources close to the magazine say Garcia has already moved into her office, the former digs of Tracy Taylor, who was dismissed in May to make way for Garcia. The ?Project Runway? judge also is said to be conducting ?run-throughs? for fashion shoots for the January issue. Sources said Garcia?s requests for high-end designer wares to be featured in fashion spreads can at times be at odds with Marie Claire?s more mass-market sensibilities.

A spokeswoman for Marie Claire said, ?Nina is on contract with Elle that prohibits her from working for Marie Claire before Sept. 1. She has been in the office only to work out her travel schedule for the European fashion shows this fall.?

Garcia?s move to Marie Claire happened before the ?Project Runway? judge finalized her contract to appear on the show?s sixth edition, which will air on Lifetime instead of Bravo. On Friday, a Weinstein Co. spokeswoman confirmed Garcia has re-upped, meaning all of the principals ? herself, Michael Kors, Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum ? will move to Lifetime with the reality program. Does that mean Marie Claire has been confirmed as the official magazine partner? Sources close to the show say the deal has been done, but the Weinstein spokeswoman declined to confirm Friday.

min's Women's Fashion/Beauty Fall Preview
By MinOnline editors

http://www.minonline.com/mb_topstory.htm

For publishers seeking to build their all-important September 2008 business, they seemingly faced the perfect Murphy's Law scenario with a weak "everything": economy, dollar, consumer confidence, etc. Sure enough, the women's fashion/beauty September ad page chart on page 3 shows steep, double-digit page drops by Glamour/In Style/O/Vogue and W. But the value of min's 10-year chart is its showing that all except In Style set ad-page records last September. So it was not "the sky is falling" Murphy's Law, but the what-goes-up-must-come-down Newton's Law that applied. "Yes, we dropped from 727 ad pages [September 2007] to 674," says Vogue senior vp/publishing director (since February 2002) Tom Florio. "We also rose from 626 ad pages in 2006 to 727. That is nearly a 2-to-1 ratio of up-to-down, and I will take it anytime."

Further, with all the perceived negativity comes record-breaking Septembers for Elle (420 ad pages), Harper's Bazaar (373; a still-record 363 without Runway Report), and Allure (217), under promoted-in-May vp/publisher Agnes Chapski. Lucky, under vp/publisher Gina Sanders (moved from Teen Vogue in January), jumped from 2007's 279 to 301 ad pages (one short of its 2006 record). Self's (154 to 162) wellness message resonates in all climates, says vp/publisher (since April 2004) Kim Kelleher, and Marie Claire vp/publisher (since September 2004) Susan Plagemann is experiencing a "hot summer" with an up July/August/September (latter from 170 to 178).

With the September 2008 releases a few weeks away, the September 2007 covers of these six "up" magazines are reprised. No encores this "Fall Preview" for Lindsay Lohan (Elle) and Britney Spears (Allure). Read more of this story including Women's Fashion Chart in min.

Project Runway and Marie Clarie: Signing Up for a Lifetime Together?
By Glynnis MacNicol

Has Marie Claire landed a deal to be the official sponsor of Project Runway? All signs currently point to yes. WWD is reporting that Runway judge, and former Elle denizen Nina Garcia has officially re-upped her contract with the Weinstein-run show, and has already taken up residence in her new Marie Claire office a month ahead of her official Sept 1 start date.

The reality show is jumping from Bravo to Lifetime this season, and sources "close to the show" are saying the Marie Claire deal is done, however an official announcement has yet to be made. Of course there's always the hope that Harvey will blog about it.

Digital Esquire Cover Full of Flashing Lights, None of Them Green
By Glynnis MacNicol

http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/magazines/digital_esquire_cover_full_of_flashing_lights_none_of_them_green_90162.asp

You may have heard that Esquire's next issue will feature an "electronic" cover; something called EInk will allow the cover to flash on newsstands like a billboard, though only for ninety days. According to Esquire editor David Granger the cover is "a 21st-century technology with a 19th-century manufacturing process." However the environmental implications may be entirely 19th century.

FastCompany.com says that between the manufacturing of the cover (in China and Mexico) and the shipping (the finished product needs to travel in a refrigerated truck) the carbon footprint of this digital publishing adventure is fairly large. Not only that it can't be recycled. All of which may not be totally surprising considering Green hasn't been selling so well of late. All that glitters (in press coverage, anyway) sells better, at least for the moment.

Get Free Access to Your Favorite Magazines (While It Still Lasts)
By Jossip editors

Like BitTorrent, but for magazines, Mygazines.com is a dumping ground for your favorite printed materials. Full issues of popular titles all scanned for your digital perusing ? and just like TiVo, you can skip the ads! (Just click ?next page.?) On our end, the site has given us a chance to revisit magazines that don?t arrive in our mailbox gratis, and whose cover price would better be spent on a round of iced lattes at the corner Starbucks that hasn?t closed, like Spin, Esquire, and something called Empire.

And yes indeed, your favorite tabloids are all available too: Us Weekly, Star, and People are fully scanned, meaning you don?t have to flip through them at the checkout aisle while pretending to rifle through your lip balm options.

But while clicking through the site, we can only imagine this little operation going the way of RedLasso: Started as a means to democratize the media and allow anyone (read: bloggers) to comment on copyrighted content (there are handy tools to leave notes for other readers) ? and then promptly shut down when content owners began to sue.

Babies for Sale
By Chadwick Matlin
7/25/08
http://www.slate.com/id/2195977/

The celebrity baby picture market is inflating nearly as fast as the Zimbabwean dollar. According to impossible-to-confirm reports, Matthew McConaughey earned $3 million for his newborn. J. Lo reportedly raked in $6 million. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have reportedly sold pictures of their newborn twins for $16 million. (Obviously, Brangelina will donate the proceeds to charity.) They're not alone; Jamie Lynn Spears, Christina Aguilera, Nicole Richie, Jessica Alba, and that pregnant man have all reaped the monetary benefits of the baby bump.

But inviting a glossy-magazine photographer into your home is like inviting a vampire through the doorway. Once they're in, they're never going to stop trying to come after the kid. (This doesn't take into account the prying eyes of telephoto lenses, as Brad Pitt can attest.) Considering all the bitching and moaning celebrities spew about the paparazzi, you'd think they would want to keep the photogs away, not tell the world how much pictures of their new scions are worth. This should come as no surprise, but celebrities make crappy economists.

What follows is a field guide for famous mothers to consult once they've brought a new life into the world. We're offering suggestions based on three personality types, and advice is doled out for three key variables. "Distribution" details how many magazines should get access to the first photos. "Time" prescribes a time line between birth and first glimpse. "Money" recommends an asking price for the celebrity. Celebs, welcome to Baby Econ 101.

I'm a 24 year old (25 soon, if it matters) female looking for a room to rent. I'm originally from CA and moved to NY last fall to pursue my career. I work at a publishing house, am currently living in Manhattan and would love to stay, preferrably on the Upper East or Upper West Sides. I'm responsible, reliable, quiet but friendly, and financially stable. I'm looking for a non-smoking, drug free apartment with another girl or two around my age with whom I can hang out once in a while. We don't have to be best friends but I find my roommate situations work out best when we can be friends with one another. I'm also allergic to cats so the apartment would have to be feline-free but I'm OK with dogs. I'd say $1100 is my limit. I'm looking for a Nov 1 move in so if anyone knows they'll be needing someone, I'd love to hear from you. Please e-mail me at mekdancr@aol.com.
