We plan to ponder "Find Your Inner Ugly Betty: 25 Career Lessons for Young Professionals Inspired by TV Shows” by Tanner Stransky. Ed only wishes his college career counselor had ponied up some of these gems and been such a straight shooter. Mixed Media: ‘Oprah,’ ‘Vogue’ Among Newsstand Losers
By Jeff Bercovici 7/29/08
http://www.portfolio.com/views/blogs/mixed-media/2008/07/29/oprah-vogue-among-major-newsstand-losers

The official semi-annual magazine circulation report won't be out until next month, but thanks to the Audit Bureau of Circulations' new Rapid Report system, this year we'll get an early look at how top monthly titles sold in the first half. And the answer is...not well, for the most part.

Hearst took some big hits, with newsstand sales of Good Housekeeping, Marie Claire and O, The Oprah Magazine all tumbling by double-digit percentages. O's newsstand average was down 16.4 percent, to 742,500, which certainly casts the supposedly voluntary departure of editor in chief Amy Gross in a new light. Marie Claire's average of 291,059 is down 11.7 percent from last year, and down an alarming 29 percent from two years ago, when Joanna Coles took over as editor in chief.

Meanwhile, Hearst's most profitable title, Cosmopolitan, was "only" down 6.7 percent; I use scare quotes around "only" because that represents a disappearance of around 124,000 copies per issue.

Obamas Bomb for People
By Jossip Editors 7/29/08
http:// www.jossip.com/obamas-bomb-for-people-20080729/

When Us Weekly slapped Barack and Michelle Obama on the cover, Janice Min saw her newsstand numbers spike: Some 1 million readers picked up the issue, compared to the usual 800,000 copies that it normally moves. Perhaps looking for its own brand of presidential success, People followed suit, putting the entire Obama clan on its cover.

Things did not go as well. Data from last week’s sales has just come in and we’re told People’s Obama cover moved just 1.3 million copies on the newsstand, lower than its usual 1.4-1.5 million copies.

Here’s one way to look at the math: Based on an average of 1.4 million newsstand copies, People’s Obama cover saw a 7.5 percent drop off. Meanwhile, The New Yorker’s recent Obama cover moved 75,000 copies, up from its average 43,000 on the newsstand, a 74 percent increase.

Memo Pad: WILL CARLA SELL?

Vanity Fair is betting its September Style issue newsstand on the cross-Atlantic appeal of Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, shot by Annie Leibovitz at the Elys?e Palace and accompanied with a cover line, “The New Jackie O?” Perhaps the question mark is due to the fact that commentators love to anoint another political wife as the new Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis — Michelle Obama, who, like Bruni-Sarkozy, was named to the International Best-Dressed List, also in the September issue. (Obama, dubbed “our commander in sheath” by the magazine, is already in her second year on the list; Bruni-Sarkozy is a first-timer.)

In the interview with Vanity Fair special correspondent Maureen Orth, Bruni-Sarkozy told of showing her husband, early in their relationship, nude photos from her modeling days, to prepare him for any publicity storm ahead. “He said, ‘Oh, I like this one! Can I have a print of it?’” Bruni-Sarkozy recalled.

The interview is timed to coincide with the release of her new album, “Comme si de rien n’?tait” (“As if nothing had happened”), which could be this summer’s hit. France’s first lady’s third album landed on top of the French album chart after its first week on sale. As of July 19, the singer sold more than 32,000 copies. But even if this last album reaches the 1.2 million her first one did in 2002, it won’t make the former model richer, as all proceeds are going to charity.

Despite Reports of Internal Objections, L.A. Times Readies Relaunch of Monthly Magazine

Founding editor of InStyle takes reigns as business side takes control.

The Los Angeles Times announced today that LA, its new monthly Sunday magazine with an unusual operating arrangement, will debut on September 7. LA will be distributed only within the Sunday Los Angeles Times and is a standalone editorial operation, separate from the newspaper. Last month, the company moved to shift control of the magazine from the paper's newsroom to its business operations staff, change its name and replace the entire editorial staff.

The launch signals "a serious intent to competitively engage in the Southern California marketplace"—alongside Los Angeles, Angeleno, L.A. Confidential, C and Venice magazines—the Times says. Annie Gilbar, former editor-in-chief of LAStyle magazine and one of the founding editors of InStyle, has been named editor. Valarie Anderson, director of fashion advertising for the Los Angeles Times, will serve as publisher while retaining her role at the paper.

The Times has an average paid Sunday circulation of 1,231,318, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

John Donnelly was named publisher of Time Inc.’s struggling Money magazine, becoming the third to lead sales at the personal finance title in the past year. He starts in his new role Aug. 4.

Donnelly, formerly associate publisher for the Fortune Money Group, to which Money belongs, succeeds Brett Wilson, who left in June after just 10 months in the position to become senior vp of advertising sales for Gannett’s USA Today.

Money previously was sold by Mike Dukmejian as part of Time Inc.’s Business and Finance Network, which included Fortune, CNNMoney.com and the now-defunct Business 2.0. Dukmejian left Time Inc. when the network was partially disbanded last fall.
