Losing A Small Fortune
By Keith J. Kelly

Another round of cuts has hit Fortune, this time at its little sister title, Fortune Small Business.

Known by the initials FSB, the magazine is axing 14 of its 17 editorial staffers, including its editor Dan Goodgame, a 10-year veteran of Time Inc.

FSB was run essentially as a custom-published magazine for small business holders of American Express cards, but because it had controlled (in other words, free) circulation of around 1 million, it was considered a lucrative add-on to the main magazine for ad-sales purposes.

Lost and Not 'Found': Wired Ditches Back Page, New One Coming in October
By Noah

After finally finishing this month's Wired— you know, the one will Julia Allison on the cover — we noticed there was an ad for a Sony laptop in place of the usual “Found: Artifacts From The Future” back page.

Curious, we emailed the magazine’s deputy editor, Thomas Goetz, to learn the fate of the six-year staple: “We have decided to retire the page (it has been, I’d note, one of the rare successes in the notoriously difficult game of magazine backpages). But despite the blogospeculation, we have not forsaken Found for an advertising spot.

Instead, we are cooking up something very cool and very original for our *new* backpage feature, a new twist on the form that we think will engage and entertain our readers as much as Found has. It will be edited by [senior editor] Chris Baker, who also was the visionary behind Found these past several years. Readers should look for it in our October issue.”

Cond? Nast Femme-Blogs Languish in Cyberspace
By Josh Koblin

http://www.observer.com/2008/media/cond-nast-femme-blogs-languish-cyberspace

At first glance, the Web sites elasticwaist.com, productfiend.com and dailybedpost.com look like garden-variety blogs created by average civilians. There’s little clutter, no ads, links to other sites with similar post-feminist themes (dieting, skin care and sex, respectively) and sporadically updated content.

But upon closer inspection, there’s something suspiciously … slick about the layout of all three, isn’t there? Aha! Down the left-hand side of each loom the logos of Glamour, Allure and Self, rendered in varying shades of pink. And then in size 7.5 Veranda font, tucked away at the bottom of the page, is the telltale line: “Copyright © 2007 Cond? Nast Publications. All rights reserved.”

As magazine publishers continue to try and refine their confused, semi-committed approach to the Internet, these little-known sites—in-house name: “The Network”—are a company trial of sorts, a slick repackaging of “girl”-illa blogs edited by Susan Kaplow, previously a director of development at the teen-marketing site alloy.com. Though they all link with mysterious persistence to Cond? Nast products and advertisers, Ms. Kaplow refused to call them “Webvertorial.” “They’re separate from the magazines,” she said. “These sites give us the opportunity to create a lot of content and really develop a conversational exchange.”

Martha's Surprise, Couldn't He Just Mail it?...

MARTHA’S SURPRISE: Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia on Tuesday reported that advertising revenue in publishing was up 6 percent (excluding Blueprint) in the second quarter versus last year, but guidance for the third quarter isn’t as rosy. Wenda Harris Millard, president of media and co-chief executive officer, said during the company’s quarterly earnings call that publishing revenue is expected to be down in the midteens during the third quarter, compared with the same period 12 months ago. Overall revenue for the publishing segment was down 2.5 percent in the second quarter, to $46.3 million, because of an increase at Martha Stewart Living offset by the loss of Blueprint.

The division also includes its book operations. Categories that helped increase ad growth at the company during the second quarter included apparel and financial services, which is surprising, given that those are two sectors being squeezed at other titles.

Newly appointed executive chairman Charles Koppelman said the company just started rolling out magazines overseas, beginning with international editions of Martha Stewart Living and Everyday Food, but he declined to provide more details. Living had a drop in ad pages, although ad revenues were up 8 percent, and circulation was down about 10 percent. Internet revenues were $3.2 million for the quarter, compared with $2.5 million during the same period last year.

When Bad Things Happen to Good Coverboys
By Matt Haber

Yesterday, newspapers and websites reported that inexplicably well-known actor Shia LaBeouf had been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after an accident in Los Angeles. Today, without further explanation for why Mr. LaBeouf is famous, there are new reports that suggest that the actor may not have been drunk and the accident may have been the fault of a driver who ran a red light.

This has to be good news for the editors of Details, whose September cover features the continually inexplicably famous actor with the headline "Shia LaBeouf Just Can't Get Laid." If Mr. LaBeouf turns out to be innocent of the charges against him, he may just break the magazine's developing curse on its coverboys.

Christian Bale appeared on the June 2008 cover of the magazine and found himself arrested after being accused of assaulting his mother in London. (Subsequent reports say that no such assault took place, but the actor and his reps are asking for privacy.)
