******* The cover is the most important and only promotional tool a magazine has to sell itself at the newsstand. Yet, how many covers look alike? Or seem like last week's or last month's issue? To garner attention at any newsstand, covers need to stand out. Yet, too few editors and art directors do it right. In my career as a magazine executive and consultant, here are eight pieces of advice that I have given and received to increase newsstand sales: The more time spent working, planning, and strategizing on a cover, the better it will be. Too many editors put their covers together at the last moment. Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Kate White, who will celebrate her 10th anniversary in August, plans her covers a year in advance. You could always forgive the publishers of Wired magazine for not landing the Gucci account, that Sean John schedule or those Prada pages. Wired is not like most Cond? Nast glossies, after all, which usually come plump with fashion ads for fashionable people. Where GQ covers urge dressing to kill, promising "The One New Suit Every Man Needs," Wired covers say things like "Hackers Rule!" That lands ads for rechargeable batteries before Burberry every time. But a few months ago Cond? Nast replaced a departing Wired publisher with Chris Mitchell, a former Wired sales guy who had been publisher of Details since 2004. Now Mr. Mitchell wants to sell fashion and luxury marketers on a magazine that recently published a supplement called "Geekipedia." MORE ONLINE

TYRA Banks - the mastermind of gimmicks - is at it again. Banks - who once had her breasts examined on TV to show everybody they were "real" - is now dressing up as Michelle Obama for the September cover of Harper's Bazaar. "It's a full makeover," said one spy. "You know how Tyra likes to do that stuff. And she'll get a lot of press off it." A rep for Banks didn't return calls.

Linda Wells hosted a dinner Thursday night at the Thompson Beverly Hills to fete Allure?s August cover girl, Victoria Beckham, who, like so many overly adorned pop stars before her, received an image makeover in the issue?s pages. ?I?m always surprised when anyone wants me to be on their cover, but it?s really flattering and fun,? said a Marc Jacobs-clad Beckham. ?I always show up to a shoot in jeans, a sweatshirt and a ponytail and say, ?What do you want to do with me??? Beckham guessed that part of her appeal lies in the fact that she?s not afraid to change her image. ?I think it shows I don?t take myself too seriously, and I?m not afraid to push the envelope,? she said. The 50-person dinner, which included Beckham?s husband, mother, father and sister, was also star-studded with the likes of Quincy and Kidada Jones, Jamie Foxx, Eva Longoria and Tony Parker, Kate Beckinsale and Lindsay Lohan. Wells said Allure?s September cover, featuring Carrie Underwood, would also offer a new take on the country crooner. ?She looks very much like Ursula Andress with the hair and dramatic eye makeup.?
