******* Consumers, faced with a dearth of celebrity scandals and a souring economy, have seemingly turned skittish on many of their favorite magazines. "Let's face it, magazines aren't a necessity, they're a luxury item and people are thinking twice about how they spend their money," said one high-level editor. MORE ONLINE

In May, Wired's editor-in-chief Chris Anderson mentioned a social networking, um, network the magazine was developing. Due to lawyer-related constraints, he couldn't go beyond a brief announcement, choosing instead to wax philosophically about aerial robotics. It appears as though we're getting closer to the platform becoming a reality. Folio:'s Jason Fell reports that Anderson's magazine launched niche SN site Wired Biz on August 1. Jeff Howe, a contributing editor at Wired and author of the book Crowdsourcing, discusses the site's goals in a video. Among other things, Wired Biz will focus on "harnessing the creative power of the crowd" and small business development. MORE ONLINE

The rest of the Tyra Banks as (possible) First Lady Michelle Obama have been posted online. Looking at the pics as a whole it becomes clear that the weirdness factor has nothing to do with Harper's Bazaar running a Obamas as First Couple photo spread so much as their decision to use Tyra Banks in the role of First Lady. If they had, say, decided to cast the part of Michelle Obama using an anonymous model chances are we'd be discussing how the fashion photos perhaps signify that a black presidency (specifically an Obama one) has become culturally acceptable. However, by choosing Tyra — a cultural force in her own right — it feels like we're merely watching "Ms. Banks" play out some weird personal fantasy of her own making. With the presidential election just four months away, the political climate on Capitol Hill is heating up—and the magazine industry is feeling it. Last week, the Free Flow Legislation Act, also known as shield law, was voted down by the Senate 51-43—just nine votes shy of passing the legislation. Magazine industry advocacy groups like American Business Media and the Magazine Publishers of America say they will continue to push for approval. “No one is giving up on getting this done,” says Jim Cregan, MPA executive vice president of government affairs. If passed, the legislation which would provide federal protection for reporters’ confidential sources. MORE ONLINE
