******* A week after reporting surprisingly strong financial results, including a swing back to profitability, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia has wielded the ax, cutting 25 people from its payroll this week, sources confirmed yesterday. Tina Brown has worked in the US for more than two decades, since taking the helm of Vanity Fair in 1984; and she's now attempting to reinvent herself for the internet. But Lady Evans, as the 55-year-old former magazine editor is also entitled to call herself, remains at heart a Brit of an earlier generation, pickled in ink and arch wit. Her forthcoming news site, backed by old patron Barry Diller of IAC, is to be dubbed The Daily Beast, after the shameless tabloid of Evelyn Waugh's 1938 novel Scoop. The Digg kiddies will be so confused. Incidentally, the site's branding was outed by Tina's friend, octogenarian gossip columnist Liz Smith. Having been burned by the backlash against Talk magazine?the glossy backed by Harvey Weinstein which Tina Brown launched with massive hype and one of the most lavish parties in magazine history?Manhattan's "queen of buzz" has been more discreet in the preparation of her first web venture. Good News! Literally, we have some actual good magazine news to report. The folks at New York have informed us that the magazine has achieved a "3.4% increase in single copy (newsstand) sales for the first half of 2008." Not only that, they achieved it after raising their cover price by 20%. The strongest performers included the Spring Fashion issue featuring Lindsay Lohan as Marilyn Monroe, Hillary Clinton, the fall of Eliot Spitzer, and the Best of New York (wait, what about the Gossip Girl cover?!). Also, paid subscribers are up. In its Fas Fax statement, the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) will report that New York magazine achieved a 3.4% increase in single copy (newsstand) sales for the first half of 2008 over first half 2007, even with a 20% cover price increase (to an average of $4.16, with regular issues at $3.99 from $2.99 and double or perfect-bound issues at $4.99 from $3.99). The phrase ?flat is the new up? became a mantra in recent years when it came to assessing newsstand sales. Well, as core fashion titles, women?s service books and men?s magazines have almost universally posted declines in their single-copy sales in the first half of 2008, how does ?less down is the new up? sound? To wit, Hachette Filipacchi Media?s Tom Masterson, senior vice president for consumer marketing and manufacturing, pointed out that, while Elle?s newsstand was down 6.3 percent in the first six months, ?many of Elle?s competitors decreased more.? That?s true ? Vogue was down nearly 15 percent, though it still outsells Elle on the newsstand by an average of about 50,000 copies monthly; Harper?s Bazaar fell 8.3 percent, and W, which gets the vast majority of sales through subscription, was down 10 percent.
