******* The first half of 2008 proved to be most unkind to the magazine business, with newsstand sales taking a pounding from consumers rocked by soaring gas prices and falling home prices. Single-copy sales of magazines fell 6.3 percent, paced by big declines for many of the weekly gossip rags and fashion mags, according to data released yesterday by the Audit Bureau of Circulations. Leading the newsstand plunge were Top 25 consumer titles In Touch and Life & Style, which fell 28.6 percent and 30.2 percent, respectively. Both titles 'fessed up in advance of the numbers that they would miss their rate bases, or minimum circulation levels promised to advertisers. In Touch's total paid circulation was off 27.1 percent, while Life & Style was off 29.9 percent. Also down at the newsstand were Wenner Media's Us Weekly, which sank 10 percent (but was up 1.3 percent in total paid circulation); Vogue, which slipped 14.7 percent (and was down 6 percent in total paid); and Cosmopolitan, which fell 6.1 percent (but was up 0.8 percent in total paid). WWDMemo Pad: DVF?s MONTHLY MISSIVES By Irin Carmon 8/12/08 http://www.wwd.com/media-news/fashion-memopad/dvfs-monthly-missives-back-to-school-a-gossip-writes-about-gossip-1710092 As if Diane von Furstenberg didn?t already have enough on her plate, she?s adding a new role: columnist for Departures magazine. The designer and Council of Fashion Designers of America president will start writing about her jet-set life starting with the magazine?s November/December issue. Departures editor in chief Richard David Story cited von Furstenberg?s ?commanding and authoritative style,? and said her own photography was expected to run with the column. ?Her whole life is like a Departures magazine,? he said. Von Furstenberg was traveling and couldn?t be reached for comment. Gathering fodder for her column, perhaps?

For its first two U.S. launches under CEO Mary Berner, Reader?s Digest Association is looking abroad for inspiration. Best You, a health title set to appear Jan. 6, is modeled after Best Health, which RDA launched in Canada in March. Fresh Home, slated for Feb. 24, is a takeoff of RDA?s Australian title The Family Handyman, aimed at young, do-it-yourself couples. The launches will come out of RDA?s Home & Garden and Health & Wellness affinity groups and fall under the direction of editor Neil Wertheimer. Unlike other RDA home magazines that have a homespun appeal and only recently began to take ads, the new titles aim more upscale, with a large trim size and a cover price of $4.99. Each will launch in tandem with Web sites with a focus on community. The new titles will start small, with a 300,000 newsstand distribution and quarterly frequency. ?We are being conservative,? said Alyce Alston, president of Home & Garden and Health & Wellness. ?I want to know there?s consumer demand for the product.? Traditional media companies looking to the growing array of third-party ad networks as a panacea for unloading their remnant digital inventory might want to first speak with Rodale?s MaryAnn Bekkedahl. The publisher of leading health and enthusiast magazine titles like Men?s Health, Prevention and Runner?s World and their companion electronic products, Rodale has distinguished itself as a model for old media hands shaping their digital strategies. The company combined all of its print and online sales efforts two years ago and grew its digital business to the point that it now accounts for better than 10 percent of the company?s total ad revenue. (Digital ad revenue through June 2008 rose 11 percent versus last year, according to Rodale.) Still, Rodale faced the same frustration as other publishers when it came to offloading its unsold online space. So, this past March, it made the decision, as others have, to turn over some of that inventory to third-party online networks. MORE ONLINE
