For those who thought Portfolio might have at last found a tried-and-true cover formula, think again. According to the magazine?s newsstand figures, conceptual covers and those featuring real-life executives have performed almost equally so far this year.

Sources close to Portfolio estimated that both the February issue with a condiment-packed burger on the cover and the July one with Starbucks founder Howard Schultz have been the strongest sellers thus far in 2008, selling around 29,000 copies each.

The January cover of a model dressed as a spy and the April issue with a pale woman?s leg in a red high heel sold just about as many copies as Portfolio?s June issue with IAC/InterActive Corp.?s Barry Diller, or about 25,000 copies on average.

News at AMI ? And It Isn?t Just John Edwards
By Amy Wicks

American Media Inc. has been on a roll in the last few weeks thanks to its National Enquirer operation blowing away all media in coverage of the John Edwards sex scandal.

Now it has more good news: The publishing group on Thursday reported net profits of $388,000 in the first quarter versus a net loss of $123,000 in the same period a year ago. Revenues were down 2 percent to $119 million because, like every other publisher, AMI has seen general market softness in ad spending.

Chief executive officer David Pecker said AMI?s ad pages were down 3.2 percent from Jan. 1 through July 31, but claimed that?s the smallest decline of any publisher with more than 3,000 ad pages.

The Brangelina twins have arrived, Madonna will enter her sixth decade tomorrow and we are in the midst of the latest series of Big Brother. But despite the glut of celebrity gossip, sales of celebrity magazines have hit the buffers.

Titles such as Heat!, Closer and Reveal saw their sales plunge, in the latest figures from the Audited Bureau of Circulation.

The success of gossip websites, the economic downturn and growing apathy towards Big Brother were responsible for the collapse, industry experts said.

Emmis Cuts 4.5 Percent of Work Force
By Jason Fell

Facing a brutal economy, another magazine publisher has announced a series of staffing cuts.

Indianapolis-based Emmis Communications eliminated 4.5 percent of its workforce?about 40 positions?from its magazine publishing division.

An Emmis spokesperson could not be immediately reached for comment.

Emmis also slashed the salaries of remaining publishing employees by 2 percent. In a statement, a spokesperson called the job and salary cuts ?considerably more thoughtful and measured than what we?ve seen from many of our peers.?

Emmis publishes Texas Monthly, Country Sampler, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Orange Coast magazines.

Last month, Emmis reported its fiscal first quarter net revenue at $86.8 million, mostly flat from $87.3 million during the same period last year. Operating income was $12.6 million, compared to $12.1 million for the same quarter of the prior year.

Hip Hop Bible Stages A Comeback

The Source, which was in bankruptcy last year, is relaunching with a 20th-anniversary issue and a new focus ? a direction that its co-publisher says will restore the magazine, once known as hip-hop's bible, to prominence.

"It's a very seminal period, an opportunity to both celebrate 20 years of content and the fact that The Source was a leader in chronicling the culture of hip-hop," said L. Londell McMillan, a media and entertainment lawyer who, along with investment banker Jeffery Scott, purchased The Source earlier this year.

The new issue, which hits newsstands next week, features four separate covers of hip-hop pioneers LL Cool J, Ice Cube, Queen Latifah and Nas, photographed by movie director Spike Lee.
