Like Mariah Carey's Head on Its Cover, Elle Doesn't Appreciate Lopsided Coverage
By Editors

http://www.jossip.com/like-mariah-careys-head-on-its-cover-elle-doesnt-appreciate-lopsided-coverage-20080820/

According to a handful of Elle staffers we've spoke with in the past few weeks, the magazine's editor, Robbie Myers, is actually pretty well liked by many on the masthead. Sure, she has her flaws ("What's with the constant giggling?" snipes one; she's always in a "shitty mood," counters another) and we've been fed plenty of anecdotes to squeeze her in to some Jossip copy, but might Ms. Myers actually be running a fashion magazine and have the respect of her staff? Pity, then, that in New York's feature this week about the feud between soon-to-be-ex-Elle staffer Nina Garcia and fashion news director and Stylista face Anne Slowey, Myers didn't get to have her say.

Though quizzed by the article's author (Gawker Media's Moe Tkacik) about Project Runway and Stylista, Myers wasn't asked about the supposed bad blood between her two minions. And that doesn't sit well with her: "That story is full of quotes about why I did what I did, how could they possibly know why I did anything or what motivated me to do anything in my job, unless they ask me? Even if someone else where to speculate about why I did something, the fact that nobody called me even to fact check it is egregious."

Myers has written us notes before, saying some of our coverage hurt her, too.) And there's the rub: Tkacik is, by profession, a blogger (from Jezebel to Gawker in some twisted job hijacking involving Radar), and we're trained not to ask those type of questions that might have you confuse us with journalists. But if her work is going to appear in New York, well, perhaps it should have met higher standards — and reported all sides of the story. By not doing so, well, this mini scandal stays alive.

Obama Contains Multitudes ... Again
By Matt Haber
8/19/08
http://www.observer.com/2008/media/obama-contains-multitudes-again

The September 1/8, 2008 "Special Convention Issue" of The Nation features a striking cover of Barack Obama as a mosaic composed of hundreds of smaller images of other people, suggesting that Senator Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, doesn't just stand for himself: He is all of us united. The cover line says it all: "What He's Made Of." (Like Soylent Green, he's made out of people.)

But the image, credited to "Gene Case & Stephen Bling/Avenging Angel From a Poster by Shepard Fairey, Illustrations by Christopher Serra," is also striking for its similarity to the cover of The Atlantic from December 2007, which also featured Senator Obama as the sum of many, many parts. In the case of The Atlantic, the tiles were images of partisans like Howard Dean, Karl Rove, Michael Moore, and Ann Coulter, meant to illustrate writer Andrew Sullivan's thesis that Senator Obama represents a break from the nastiness and divisiveness of our political culture in the Clinton and Bush years.

Of course, neither magazine was the first to create a cover using such an effect. Wired did it with the face of Media Lab founder Nicholas Negroponte back in November 1995 as did The Nation itself with George Bush on its "Why We Must Leave Iraq" cover from September 24, 2007.

Release: Missbehave Magazine Names Lesley Arfin Editor-in-Chief
By Matt Haber
8/19/08
http://www.observer.com/2008/media/release-i-missbehave-i-magazine-names-lesley-arfin-editor-chief

Vice 'Dear Diary' columnist and cool gal about town Lesley Arfin has been named editor in chief of Missbehave, the cheeky hipster women's magazine, according to a release.

Ms. Arfin, who probably still isn't over Rosie O'Donnell leaving The View, is described by Samantha Moeller, Missbehave's founder, as "without a doubt the quintessential ‘Missbehave’ chick: Chic, yet badass, she was the obvious choice."

In 2007, Ms. Arfin told The Huffington Post's A.J. Daulerio in an interview that she could think of no cooler magazine to work for than the Brooklyn-based Vice.

Interview, the Andy Warhol-founded magazine that has seen a number of editorial and staffing changes since its longtime editor-in-chief, Ingrid Sischy, left the magazine, is set to unveil a redesign next week.

The new-look Interview—hitting newsstands August 26—is bigger (13” X 10” from the current 12” X 10”) perfect bound and uses a heavier stock. Most notably, the September issue features a striking foil-and-ink cover—the first North American magazine to do so, the company says. It will carry 140 ad pages, a 10.8 percent increase over the September 2007 issue, which carried 128.

In June, Brant Publications laid off four employees as part of a restructuring effort. Brant, which also publishes Magazine Antiques and Art in America, employs about 85 people.

Meredith Corp. has tapped Dana Points, executive editor at Cond? Nast’s Self, to fill its top editor slot at Parents. Points will fill the role previously held by Sally Lee, who was promoted in early July to senior vp and New York editorial director as well as editor of Ladies’ Home Journal, replacing Diane Salvatore. Points will report to Lee.

Parents dominates the parenting category, with 873 ad pages year to date through August, a gain of 3.1 percent, per the Mediaweek Monitor. It and other large, traditional parenting titles are challenged to compete for readers who increasingly get parenting information from the Internet, however.

Total circ stood at 2.2 million in the first half of ’08, an increase of 0.5 percent, per the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

Portia and Ellen's Wedding Graces the Cover of People
By Glynnis

http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/media_people/portia_and_ellens_wedding_graces_the_cover_of_people_92034.asp

Barack Obama may still be struggling to articulate his stance on gay marriage, but People has no issues whatsoever! Portia de Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres, who were married in California over the week-end, are the cover subjects of this week's issue. Also, the only two people to beat Michael Phelps to anything.
